Personally, I'd go for Opeth's Blackwater Park, but I'm not much of a death or black metal fan anyway. Isis, Pelican, Arch Enemy, Opeth, Mastodon and Finntroll are pretty much all the 'extreme metal' bands I listen to.

Mastodon, Opeth and Finntroll are good, never heard Arch Enemy or Pelican, Isis is a moot thing.

Based on what I've read, those bands represent some of the very best of black metal.

 

(and Dragonlord just barely qualifies as black metal).

The Arcade Fire - Crown of Love

 

For so long I wanted to hate this band. The singer's Modest Mouse overtones and all the love from the indie-press really made me want to contradict them. But the album is actually good. Very good. Dammit.

the face paint and demon customs are uber lame, no question.

I also do not care much for "cookie monster" vocals which both

black metal and death metal share.

 

I do, however, like the "thin" guitar sound that bands like Satyricon use.
