Well, he is smarter than most rebel pilots apparently... he didn't go into the trench.

 

Oh and yeah, Han is hellacool.

 

 

It doesn't matter how he got there. The important thing is that he allowed his friend to succeed, redeeming himself in the process.

I think they got picked up on Episode IV. That's the part where Obi-Wan went about shutting down the generators so they could hike it while the rest rescued Leia.

 

Of course they then led the Empire straight to Yavin IV but that's basically it.
