Deraldin Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 And don't forget that the Leafs are really glad that the salary cap has been increased. It looks like they'll be paying Tie Domi and Ed Belfour not to play this season. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You think anyone else will pick up Domi if the Leafs buy him out, or will he end up retiring?
Kor Qel Droma Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 My brain tells me Domi is done, but my stoner senses predict he will end up in Phoenix. Then again I think everyone is going to the Coyotes. I hope Calgary signs J.R. to center the Iginla and Tanguay line. I still wouldn't pick it in my hockey pool. I'm already committed to Gaborik-Rolston-Demitra before training camp even starts. Jaguars4ever is still alive. No word of a lie.
Deraldin Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 If JR is as serious about shaping up as he says he is and they can get him cheap then it might be a good signing for them. I've always liked JR, not for his skill, but because he's such a loud mouthed jerk I just can't wait to see what he says next.
Kor Qel Droma Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 I just read that Radek Dvorak has said through his agent he's not coming back to the Oilers next year. Although he never panned out offensively as well as any of the parties involved had hoped, he still played balls out most nights. And I remember a beautiful end to end goal he scored a few games after coming over in the Anson Carter trade. I tip my hat to you, DVO, best of luck in Phoenix. As for Roenick, I hope he signs, starts out on fire and then gets concussed for the eleventh hundred time by Christmas. Does anyone remember when his jaw got broke and it showed him playing with it as he went back to the bench. I swear, one of these days he'll lose a finger or something out there. Go J.R!! Jaguars4ever is still alive. No word of a lie.
mkreku Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 I'm still trying to swallow the fact that the Leafs just wasted $30 million on McCabe.. Imagine the real defenseman you could get for that amount of money! At least we held onto Kaberle (the best defenseman in Toronto.. not that that says a lot lately..). Why is it that every team in the league manage to improve their teams with exciting trades while the Leafs end up with all the 40 year old has-beens?! Not only that, they usually manage to pay them $5 million for their retirement season where they end up playing 15-20 games. Rumours are saying that Gary Roberts wants to come back to the Leafs! With my luck they WILL sign that 40 year old wreck.. for $5 million. And trade away Steen in the same deal. Swedes, go to: Spel2, for the latest game reviews in swedish!
alanschu Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 I heard a great quote from Bob Stauffer on Total Sports today with respect to a fan commenting that Roenick would be perfect for Toronto: "He's not very good. He's over the hill. He'll want a large salary. He's prone to injury." :D
mr insomniac Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 Heard that a deal for Pronger fell through with the Leafs because Edmonton wanted Steen, and Ferguson wouldn't give him up. I took this job because I thought you were just a legend. Just a story. A story to scare little kids. But you're the real deal. The demon who dares to challenge God. So what the hell do you want? Don't seem to me like you're out to make this stinkin' world a better place. Why you gotta kill all my men? Why you gotta kill me? Nothing personal. It's just revenge.
alanschu Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 That's what the rumour mill has. Eklund, in all of his "glory," figures Pronger will be dealt at Midnight as Free Agency starts, according to a "dependable source." I wouldn't be too surprised. At least with the way things are now, I'm actually excited about the return on a player like Pronger. I'd still love for him to be an Oiler though I think the deal that interested me the most (among the rumours) is the Florida one for Jay Boumeester and Horton. Some Anahiem fans had some interesting proposals that included players like Joffrey Lupul and Giguere. Given that we still need some more scoring IMO, as well as a goalie (sounds like Roli is on the outs...but who knows with the media and their "sources"), I'm not terribly adverse to the idea. I wasn't really sold on the Toronto deal, even with Steen. But I'm not too familiar with Toronto, outside of their fans in my area that seem insistent that they can get any player they want for the scraps on their team. At least I won't have to listen to any more "We'll just sign Redden" comments from them (or fans of any other team). I have also heard some people (I think mostly just fans though, rather than the media) talking about a possible trade with the Rangers. Though it was looking more at their youth, focusing on players like Marc Staal and Montoya.
Deraldin Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 Surprise, surprise, Lidstrom is making Richards money. <_<
alanschu Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 You're surprised that arguably the best defensemen in the NHL for the past 5 years is getting paid 7.6 million?
Volourn Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 Alanshu wins. DWARVES IN PROJECT ETERNITY = VOLOURN HAS PLEDGED $250.
Deraldin Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 You're surprised that arguably the best defensemen in the NHL for the past 5 years is getting paid 7.6 million?<{POST_SNAPBACK}> Not in the slightest, but it's still nearly a fifth of the team's salary for one person.
Krookie Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 Sigh. I was in a championship yesterday. We lost. I got ejected. /sigh.
Hurlshort Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 Sigh. I was in a championship yesterday. We lost. I got ejected. /sigh. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> At least you went down fighting. Isn't Lidstrom going to be old soon?
alanschu Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 People overrate age. I remember tons of people telling me that trading for Chris Pronger was dumb because he was 30 years old and "on the decline." It seems people really overrate prospects. And this seems to be fans of every time. I got sick of all the people saying that Rob Schremp should be dressed because he'd be good for at least a PPG per game. Yes it's great when a young player breaks out. Often because they still have a cheap price tag because of RFA status and whatnot. A good team is still going to need good young players, because of the salary cap (Eric Staal was instrumental in Carolina's run). But I think trading them for players signed long term is more advantageous than before, because the UFA age is dropping. I know a lot of people are flat out against a trade that involves Jay Boumeester for Chris Pronger, because Jay Boumeester is so much younger and is only getting better. The thing is though, is that Jay Bouwmeester is an unrestricted free agent in 3 years, whereas Chris Pronger is signed for another 4 years. And I don't think that Chris Pronger is going to be a much worse player in 4 years, barring maybe injuries.
Hurlshort Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 Defensemen seem to be able to stay on top of their game longer as well. When a forward loses a step, it makes it harder to get in scoring position. Usually the best older forwards become playmakers in their late 30's. They don't have the speed to break in like the young guys, but they can slow it down and hit those guys with the perfect pass. Defense is much more about body positioning.
Kor Qel Droma Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 Whoa! there was a lot of movement today. Jovocop to Phoenix  , Chara and Savard to the Bruins, Rollie the goalie and Pisani staying put, plus JFJr signing some half decent blue liners. Jaguars4ever is still alive. No word of a lie.
Hurlshort Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 I'm seriously being shocked by just about every signing. This is a total free-for-all. I though Jovo was definitely going to Florida, and I'm shocked that Boston was able to pull two huge talents. Looks like Toronto is busy as well. San Jose better gobble up at least one player. You'd think the opportunity to play with Thornton and Cheechoo would be good enough to attract a talented winger. I was hoping for Savard myself.
Kor Qel Droma Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 You do realize Savard is a center, though, right? Jaguars4ever is still alive. No word of a lie.
Hurlshort Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 You do realize Savard is a center, though, right? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Really? I haven't seen him play much, but I got the impression he could play wing as well. Huh, I don't know where I got that idea. There are still a ton of players out there, though. I'm guessing we'll see more movement this weekend.
alanschu Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 Over 3 million for Hal Gill. 7.5 million for Chara. 5 million for Kubina. 6.5 million for both Redden and Jovonowski. Seems like a good time to be a defensemen in the NHL!
Hurlshort Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 This really is the year of the defenseman. San Jose signed Curtis Brown. At first I frowned at this, since he was a bump on the Blackhawk log last season. But San Jose was super weak on faceoffs this last season. Brown is a face off specialist. Hopefully he'll get the rest of our centers on the right track. He probably won't get much ice time other than taking faceoffs.
mkreku Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 I can't complain about the signings the Leafs have done these last few days. Gill is.. big. I hope he's mobile enough too. We'll see. Pavel Kubina is an excellent defenseman, but is he really worth $5 million per year? I doubt it. I guess it's the players market once again.. Now all we need are some scoring wingers.. Like just about every other team in the NHL. Swedes, go to: Spel2, for the latest game reviews in swedish!
Hurlshort Posted July 2, 2006 Posted July 2, 2006 Geez, teams are wasting no time in signing players. I'm hoping San Jose inks Samsonov.
