Child of Flame
Polar Bears are really Cool. So are Meercats. My cousin has a new flame. She is 'raised Catholic' and has been making sure the home for her kids is religous. Her and my cousin left for thier house the night we were there, they were sleeping there together, although the kids were with them so it is likely no dirty fornication happened. However my cousin is a Jew, and it is generally frowned upon to marry outside your religion, I believe the term is 'uneven yoke' in the good book. Her eldest child goes to a Christian Prep School in LA sponsored by both Wayne Gretzky and Pamela 'Sue' Anderson. She made sure and put in Pam's middle name so it sounded more formal and appropriate. I asked her 'How's that work' and she proceeded to explain how a sponsor for a school worked, not how a porn starlet was associated with a Christian School. The entire school sounded horribly corporate and insane. I asked her what her ex-husband did when she said his work took him all over the place and she said he was coach of an undisclosed US Olympic Team (to avoid identification). They did do quite well at the last few Summer Olympics though. If you go into Wendy's after midnight through the pickup window, the food is made fresh and is halfway decent even. She also apparently goes to the church that is affiliated with the school. I can't say I like it, but I found it hilarious. Seriously though, the workload described by her at this school is worse than taking all AP courses at a Public school, plus they require you to be on not one but two sports teams, both with massive commitments of their own. All my Great Aunt could go on about was how it was 'good for discipline'.

I dare say it wouldn't surprise me. Two sports teams, and for the sake of discipline? This sounds more like some right wing Christian/Military Prep School to me. Tuition for this place is $20k a year too. And no, the sports wasn't for the sake of discipline as far as I could tell, that's what my Great Aunt was saying. She's kind of insane though. Cantousent
Not to get into the odd argument regarding tuition, but I would like to comment that many private schools give a tuition break for active members of the church. Most of the time, parents and children need not be active members of the church, only supportive of various charitable undertakings. The church itself carries the expense. Children who attend Christian schools tend to do well in college. I have taught at a private school. I don't fancy teaching children. I like them. They like me. ...But they're a pain to teach. Finally, Whatever Anderson did in the past, one of the main tenets of Christianity is forgiveness. If she's on the straight and narrow now, why shouldn't she sponsor a Christian school? Anyway, I'd return to one of Meta's points, in that the defining characteristic for the good private schools is not just cash, but a reasonable character and good grades. Doing particularly well in either will get you into a school somewhere on scholarship grants. I mention it in case anyone considers sending their kids to one but is afraid of the cost. Cantousent
You know, I had three of my former students come up to me after church a few weeks ago to tell me where they're going to school next year. Two are going to USC and one is going to UCI. I told them that I'll be commuting to UCLA in the fall and the USC brats (actually, they're both very nice girls) started making fun of the UCLA football team. So, private school didn't hurt their academcis, but it didn't instill kindness to old teachers either.
