August 28, 200520 yr Quite interesting. I lived on Guam a while back and it was hit by typhoons every now and again and again. August 28, 200520 yr One thing I wonder, is if this hurricane hits NO like it is suppose to... how far below sea level will it be then?
August 28, 200520 yr It will be submerged in twenty feet of water last I heard. August 29, 200520 yr better hope you have flood insurance. I'm just happy I'm in CA where the closest thing we have to a natural disaster locally is a minor earthquake every few days (minor as in it barly bumps your cup.) Eru can testify to this. August 29, 200520 yr This is exactly why I'm glad I don't live in Florida. Up here, the last flood major flood we got was when Hurricane Ivan passed through (boy, that was fun). And of course, no earthquakes.
August 29, 200520 yr Ironically, my parents were going to take their first vacation in seven years in Oct.......in New Orleans
August 29, 200520 yr Well, I hope they are bringing scuba gear. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> No ****, huh! I'm actually blaming them for this. Jinx and what not. I also HIGHLY regret not going down there when I could have. Not that I passed up a specific offer or something, but it's a place I always wanted to see without a wetsuit.
August 29, 200520 yr I just hope the people who can leave left and those who couldn't found themselves at that Dome.
August 29, 200520 yr and those who couldn't found themselves at that Dome. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> 1. No one is really sure that the Superdome can withstand 170+mph winds 2. They think it will flood on the lower levels. It can hold 80,000 peeps, but they are only letting in 20,000 due to flooding. also, it will most likely lose all power.
August 29, 200520 yr Damn!Thats one hell of a hurricane! , and worse, New Orleans is below sea level!Good luck to everyone in that area, your going to need it!
August 29, 200520 yr Doesn't the Dome have its own emergency power? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The news report I watched mentioned how uncomfortable it would be in the Dome with no power. So I'm guessing they don't. We're getting some of the side effects in the midwest with some pretty decent storms. I even heard the word tornado mentioned in the forecast this evening. I'll take rain over triple digit heat, which is what we normally get in Nebraska this time of year. Proud purveyor, owner and operator of the Wonder Twins
August 29, 200520 yr Iowa isn't much better in the heat catagory, but it is the humidity that gets you. I do have to agree though, nothing beats a good midwest thunderstorm. It has the right amount of power behind it that its awe inspiring while not overly destructive and the rain does feel nice and cool.

We're supposed to get some thunderstorms up here in Ontario later this week from what's left of Katrina.

August 29, 200520 yr My Nan lives near New Orleans, we've not heard from her yet but my parents are currently glued to Sky News
August 29, 200520 yr New Orleans JUST missed getting alot worse conditions but there are reports of possible severe damage to the superdome
August 29, 200520 yr Just saw this: Power failed in the Superdome around 5 a.m. Monday, triggering groans from the crowd. Emergency generators kicked in, but the backup power runs only reduced lighting, not the air conditioning.
August 29, 200520 yr With a hole in the roof where rain is coming through I doubt they need air conditioning.
August 29, 200520 yr With a hole in the roof where rain is coming through I doubt they need air conditioning. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well, the point was that there IS generators, that work basic stuff. We were talking about that fact yesterday
August 29, 200520 yr New Orleans JUST missed getting alot worse conditions That's good news. Does this mean the feared flooding isn't going to be so serious? I heard they were worried about a surge of water from the lake. "An electric puddle is not what I need right now." (Nina Kalenkov)
