EnderAndrew Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/space/07/30/n...anet/index.html Sedna and Quaoar had previously been touted as possible 10th planets.
nitropowah Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 Yeah they're always finding 10th planets..but maybe this one will be considered official...I guess it will depend upon the mass, the size and if the comparison with Pluto. Personally, I vote MIMAS for 10th planet: That's no moon...
jaguars4ever Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 Bah! Another damn Kuiper object that's wants to part of our solar system? Well, how about... NO. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> (And that applies to you too Pluto)
EnderAndrew Posted July 31, 2005 Author Posted July 31, 2005 For once, I think we have a solid contender, but it may replace Pluto rather than become Planet X.
nitropowah Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 I vote for this one: New planet discovered, with ten orbiting tennis ball moons
Magena Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 The have been looking long enough for the 10th planet. Wonder if this will end up being an asteroid instead.
EnderAndrew Posted July 31, 2005 Author Posted July 31, 2005 They usually track movement and gravitational effects before declaring something to be a planet.
Calax Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 And they try to see it's affects on the nearby planets. (that's how they found pluto) Why we name our planets after roman gods is byond me. Is it to trip up our 6th graders who are learning about the roman empire? Victor of the 5 year fan fic competition! Kevin Butler will awesome your face off.
EnderAndrew Posted July 31, 2005 Author Posted July 31, 2005 The Romans just stole gods from the Greeks. I prefer the Greek names personally. I wonder what gods the Romans had before they stole gods? Jeff, the god of biscuits?
Magena Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 They usually track movement and gravitational effects before declaring something to be a planet. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> From what I know of this one, they have seen that it moves, and know how big it is, but don't know the orbit or true trajectory.
Cantousent Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 Romans had family gods and a whole system that was separate from the Greeks. Still, I prefer the Greek gods also. With the Greek influence, the Roman gods become more anthropomorphic. Later, the Romans had influences from all over the empire as well as a tendency to deify Emperors. EnderAndrew Posted July 31, 2005 Author Posted July 31, 2005 I preferred my notion that they worshipped the god of biscuits. Still as a society we seem obsessed with Greek/Roman mythology to the point of overlooking and ignoring all other mythology.
Child of Flame Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 I prefer the Norse gods, because Loki is a badass.
213374U Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 The Romans just stole gods from the Greeks. I prefer the Greek names personally. I wonder what gods the Romans had before they stole gods? Well, since Rome was, according to legend, founded by Aeneas, survivor of Troy, it makes sense that their gods were similar. - When he is best, he is a little worse than a man, and when he is worst, he is little better than a beast.
Lucius Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 ... and the hammer of Thor, Mj DENMARK! It appears that I have not yet found a sig to replace the one about me not being banned... interesting.
WinterSun Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 ...it also makes good armour for Spartan II's master of my domain Pedicabo ego vos et irrumabo.
Mr. Brightside Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 A new planet? So how many time does it take untill the first person asks if there is life on it! :D <_<
Child of Flame Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 Do you think there's life on this one? Is that what you wanted with you badly formed sentence Revan Solo? Is it?!!
jaguars4ever Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 I prefer the Norse gods, because Loki is a badass. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Which is less than can be said about Robot Wars Loki. "
Shryke Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 Loki isn't a badass, he's annoying! "hmm... what should i do today.... i know! i'll steal thor's hammer! then i'll go and get Baldr killed!" anyway, aren't people still arguing over whether Pluto classifies as a planet? when your mind works against you - fight back with substance abuse!
Blarghagh Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 That's what the article says. Anyway, if it's a tenth planet, it should be called 'Persephone' officially and then dubbed 'Rupert'.
SteveThaiBinh Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 I don't think this will be a new official tenth planet. I get the feeling they'd quite like to revoke Pluto's official status, but don't dare to. All these random lumps of rock aren't likely to teach us anything new - I'm much more interested in the planets they're finding around other stars. When will they be able to spot non-gas giants around other stars? "An electric puddle is not what I need right now." (Nina Kalenkov)
213374U Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 Well, according to the article, the IAU has refused to revoke Pluto's "planethood", so I wouldn't be so sure about that. It may very well one of those things in science that defies logic but stays for continuity, nomenclature, or tradition's sake. - When he is best, he is a little worse than a man, and when he is worst, he is little better than a beast.

Kaftan Barlast Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 I prefer the Norse gods, because Loki is a badass. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yeah, what other god would turn himself into a she-horse in order to have intercourse with Sleipner and give birth to some kind of bizarre mutant ..or was that the Father of Horse he did it with and then gave birth to Sleipner?
