Child of Flame Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 My question would be "What made the Jedi change?" <{POST_SNAPBACK}> They couldn't keep it up. ^_^ <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Or they couldn't get it up....
Chemix Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 My question would be "What made the Jedi change?" It seems that the Jedi in KOTOR seem to be too more like the Jedi of the prequel era than the stories of the time of Exar Kun and Nomi Sunrider. In the old KOTOR comics it was common place for jedi to be maried and to train their children in the use of the force. Or if they were preoccupied to have another jedi master train their child. Examples would be the Qel-Droma clan, Nomi Sunrider as the wife of a jedi, and the Diath's who served the republic for over 4,000 years with their final member not dying until the clone wars. So when Bastila mentioned that love was not allowed and that children were taken away fromt heir parents I looked at it as her making excuses instead of common practice. On a different note, the robes in KOTOR were horrible and I hated that all the jedi robes lookeda like and only differeed in color. If you look at a lot of the EU you'll see that not all jedi wore robes, and most didn't during the days of Exar Kun... So I'd like to see some explanation on why the order suddenly got more strict after the original Sith War. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> you should read on the last page or the page for it, I posted a long bit about the sith war (exar kun war) having to deal with jedi rules about love and such.
ryan12177 Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 I just read and do you recall where you gathered the info about the rule changes because of Exar Kun? I don't think I've come across that and would love to read it (I'm a big fan of the KOTOR stories) I'd also say that the ruling would make no sense to me (But very little of the Jedi's rules make sense) because in a weird way it was alove and attachments that stopped Exar Kun. Ulic's love for his brother and Nomi standing out in my head. One day I'll type up my entire rant on how the Jedi were wiped out because of Yoda.... (It's really Lucas's inability to make Palpatine look manipulative without Yoda looking stupid, but that wouldn't make a good in character explanation) I don't know if you're an EU fan, but I like the fact that the New Jedi Order is shaping up more along the lines of the KOTOR era and not following the harsh guidelines from the pre empire days is great to me.
Sweeper Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 IMHO love and passion are OK for a jedi, whatever the council says. only thing is, you need to understand that revange profits man nothing. if i hadn't learned that some years ago there would have been some murders till now. and if i can nearly everyone else can!?

I never read the New Jedi Order books, but I have heard alot about them, and I like what I hear, with the exception of the look and cultural practices of the Yuuuzang Vong, which I think are a tad on the usual side if only they could have had less humanoid less demonic villans, oh well I guess I'm just searching for an equivilent to B5, but alas I doubt much will live up to the splendor and greatness that was B5, mabey one day they'll remake the series or something with the latest special effects and better actors, with a few reacurring actors from the original, but I'm driving off the topic and into the world of spam myself now. As for why it was put inplace even when love ended the war, probaly because the cost (thousands upon thousands of lives) which they didn't want to happen again. And to my knowledge it was ulic's brother's love for ulic that allowed he to be betrayed/killed, he wouldn't fight if I recall. I dunno much more about what happened to ulic besides his powers being taken by Naomi Sunrider and being stuck in the ice temple thing with Naomi's daughter, aswell as his ultimate demise. Did his killing his brother snap his darkside nature or something? The jedi are most unwise throughout all star wars so it seems or atleast about emotion so they seem. I personaly think yoda knew about palpatine, or atleast knew something was up, something that he figured he was unable to stop or he simply didn't know enough about the situation to figure it out. Palpatine was also clouding the minds of the universe remember. I'd like to see more of his manipulation in the forground though it is fun to figure out for oneself, even if it is easy to figure out. To my knowledge yoda fights palpatine in episode 3 so mabey he's not all that dumb Yoda was also key in restoring balance, with him training luke and all that. The Jedi have their own subtle manipulations which they imploy to try and maintain peace, needless to say, it doesn't seem to work
ryan12177 Posted September 21, 2004 Posted September 21, 2004 Ulic snapped out of it when he realized what he'd done. He had originally gone towards the darkside as a sort of undercover agent and was seduced by it because he arrogantly thought he was beyond temptation. In the Star Wars comics you have a similar situation taking place now where Quinlan Vos who is the foremost agent of the Jedi Shadows(imagine a secret wing of the jedis who do all the Republics spying) joined Dooku to spy on him, but has slowly fallen into darkness and blindly sees it as his maintaining his cover. But back on track... The Vong were a bit too demonic in appearance, but their entire culture was based on pain, sacrifice and mutilation to become closer to their Gods. I think you'll be surprised by how well its defined by some fo the writers of the series. The New Jedi Order has also re-defined (Saved Lucas's ass) with the whole "bringing balance to the force" issue. It has become more clear in the NJO books that perhaps the prophecy wasn't necesarily about Anakin or Luke as much as it was about Anakin's offspring bringing balance. Jacen Solo has sort of taken the lead as the Jedi Consular type who is redefining what the force is and realizing and learning things that no Jedi before him has learned. In NJO they've started to show that the teachings of the Jedi were a bit naive as the force is neither light nor dark. It'd take forever to explain and is off-topic but you can find some good summaries of the series online and the entire 20 book set is well worth buying. I'd never picked up a SW's book before I grabbed the series and really fell in love with it. Second side note? Did anyone catch that Lucas stated last week that SW's after the prequels would become a TV property with his finding someone else to helm it? Sorry for rambling, but I'm a big NJO-phile
Chemix Posted September 21, 2004 Posted September 21, 2004 Yeah I knew about the spy thing, I meant after he killed his brother I didn't know much about him. First he killed a guy who was attacking the leader of the krath to show his allegence Some dude (can never remember his name) stabbed him with a spear covered in sith poison, it burned him till he fully collapsed into the darkside, he then killed the dude and took his place. Or atleast I think it was the krath, might have been someone else, possibly the sith The culture and apearance was what I didn't like about the vong, the whole regilous mutilation thing threw me off. When I first heard about them I thought they were some non-humanoid creatures who were resistant to the force and hoped that they had a different motive then simply wanting power or simply being evil, even if it circles around their dark religon they simply wanted to wipe people out or enslave them, the theme seems over repeated to me. The books sound good none the less The NJO books and the balance of the force seems to be a repeat of restoring the constantly shifting/ unbalancing balance. Whereas anakin and luke were the first, the next generation rebalanced it again, and it may continue that way for many ages, I din't think anything was wrong with the prophecy of the balance of the force. I never thought that there was any real dark side or light side, but only the goodness and the corruption of the mind, I knew it was established in the EU somewhere, but didn't know it was in NJO, thnx for the insight
