Is it though? In a world of instant magical healing it'd be stupid to not make certain that someone stops moaning in pain and/or lop off their head to really make sure

Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary. - H.L. besides, the way death works in most fantasy settings is completely unrealistic. the great healer can cast a spell on someone who is on the floor with a broken scull, missing an arm, has a pierced lung, his legs broken in several places and is bleeding out and if that person is still breathing and has a heartbeat, even if the heart is a few seconds away from stopping, the spell will heal him to a point that its like he was never hurt at all. but if he casts the spell even a single second after the heart stopped beating the spell can't do anything despite the body being technically still alive and able to automatically regain full function (when the heart stops, the brain tries to jump start it) if the damage were to disappear.

The words freedom and liberty, are diminishing the true meaning of the abstract concept they try to explain. The true nature of freedom is such, that the human mind is unable to comprehend it, so we make a cage and name it freedom in order to give a tangible meaning to what we dont understand, just as our ancestors made gods like Thor or Zeus to explain thunder.

What? You thought it was a quote from some well known wise guy from the past?

Stupidity leads to willful ignorance - willful ignorance leads to hope - hope leads to sex - and that is how a new generation of fools is born!

We are hardcore role players... When we go to bed with a girl, we roll a D20 to see if we hit the target and a D6 to see how much penetration damage we did.

Modern democracy is: the sheep voting for which dog will be the shepherd's right hand.

Yes and no, once you are dead with -10 hp or 3 failed deathsaves your soul leaves the body and begins it's journey away, that's what makes you technically dead more than any actual damage to the body. There's Revivify in 5e if I recall correctly that puts the soul back into the body and brings you back to life before the soul has had time to go to far away (up to 1 minute after death) and your body isn't too badly damaged. If you use advanced damage mechanics you will also need more high level spells to restore your body and such, Regeneration for lost limbs, greater restoration for broken bones and so on.
