  1. Yeah, maybe, but I was responding to ksan's KotOR example. Spoken dialog was clearly going to limit the amount of replies or you'd need about 8 CDs for the game.

It's less forgiving if dialog is mostly text, but there again I think you have to draw the line. Different responses are pointless unless you're asking a very different question; and in KotOR at least, what you ask doesn't require multiple answers.

Text-only wouldn't change that. Writers aren't likely to waste their time on an immense amount of replies, covering every possible scenario, when a single answer will suffice.

  2. Actually, I think that's a price worth paying; to have all spoken dialog.

I can see how some people might not like it though. The NPCs do have similar responses but you were asking them basically the same thing, just worded differently.

Without replaying the game, you'd never know that the others gave the same answer. It's not perfect by any means, but well worth it for such impressive voice talent. And since KotOR raised the bar in this regard, future RPGs can only have more dialog options - all spoken of course.

  3. Maybe they say so because "THE GAME WILL BE DEVELOPED BY OBSIDIAN"?

Yes, I'm aware of that. ;)

But no doubt Bioware has been involved in the development, just not on the creative side. It is after all a sequel to their own game, using their own Odyssey engine - so they have a vested interest in following its progress. KotOR2 will reflect on them, good or bad. They wouldn't let anyone, even a company they trust, mess that up.

Bioware and Obsidian announced a partnership, and KotOR2 is the result (probably).

  4. hmm, I just noticed this on Bioware's KotOR forum:

    http://www.ferrago.com/story/3213

Canadian RPG experts Bioware have affirmed that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 is in development, though have declined to further elaborate on the title, which will be officially unveiled in the June issues of EGM and Computer Gaming World stateside; both of which hit shelves in late April.

Bioware's admission also reveals that the sequel will be developed by Obsidian under the ever-watchful eye of LucasArts. To the uninitiated, Obsidian is the independent development studio formed by ex-Black Isle staffers. More details soon, we hope.

If that is legit it's the first time Bioware has admitted to it. Their normal response is outright denial.

"We have no plans to develop a sequel to KotOR at this time".

    ;)

  5. I would like to see a few more classes in KotOR2, but if you're forced to be a Jedi I hope you can be darkside from the start. I don't want to suffer those stuck-up council members again when I'd rather be a Sith evilgrin.gif

Playing as a Mandalorian would be great fun too, especially if you're like that Sherruk guy on Dantooine who collects lightsabers. That would be a neat twist, you're not a Sith but you still hunt Jedi. B)

  6. Personal lightsaber styles and stances would be nice. There just wasn't enough variation. Everyone fought basically the same way.

Remember how Dooku drew his saber in AotC, or Revan in the vision with that totally bad-ass pose when facing Bastila?

Well, these could be unique to your character and improve as you gain levels. So you gain mastery in a personal style not simply single, dual, or double-bladed. Each style giving certain benefits, say defense, attack bonus, or more damage, but is unique to you.

I also think dual wield was too strong, especially with 4 crystal slots, plus the 2 super crystals on Yavin. The small +3 attack/defense bonus for dueling single saber never quite compensates for that imbalance. The result? Most people dual wield. I prefer single saber for aesthetic reasons - it's the classic lightsaber style.

  7. But dont the weapons of the age KOTOR is set have some sort of weave incorporated into them purely for the purpose of fighting against lightsabers?

Yeah, that would be cortosis weave. I was never keen on that. If they were rare it might be OK, but in KotOR almost everyone has one. It took away the prestige of using a lightsaber.

  8. I dont like instant death combat never have.

I don't like instant death either, unless it's my enemies that are doing the dying! :D

The only point here is to improve lightsabers. I'm not too concerned how that's achieved but at present I'm unimpressed by their power relative to melee weapons.

Instead of vorpal, how about increasing the critical threat range and also the damage multiplier? Melee weapons could have criticals on 20, with 2x damage, and lightsabers on 17-20 with 3x. That is without crystals.

Also, a "finesse" feat for lightsabers might be interesting. This could add extra damage based on the feat's level - 10, 15, and 20vp. No penalty to defense.

That might seem a bit excessive, but after you've seen Canderous wield 2 Baragwin assault blades, it's nothing really. ;)

btw, I think "parry" would be a nice feat to have also. Not strictly for lightsabers but to make duels more realistic.

  9. I wouldn't like to see limbs permanently dismembered just crippled for the duration of the fight. Damage could last a little longer depending on the severity but nothing you can't recover from. It would be frustrating if you constantly had to reload because of a lost limb.

As for vorpal, maybe your skill with a lightsaber determines the chance. A Padawan might only receive a 1% chance, while fully trained Jedi masters would have something like 10%. This would be fair I think so you would only face vorpal attacks rarely.

  10. You can't deflect blaster bolts with a normal melee weapon.Nor can you throw normal melee weapons at enemies who don't get a saving throw.
That's true, but even though blaster bolt deflection looks cool, it's mostly a cosmetic feature since I never felt threatened by blasters to need it. Ditto for throw lightsaber - looks nice but there are far more useful powers to take. As for dueling, sabers should be clearly superior to melee weapons.

Maybe if ALL the swords in the game (except what, the longsword?) couldn't stand up to lightsabres

hmm, ordinary swords could degrade during a battle with lightsabers, or maybe even be destroyed outright. Many games already have weapon degradation so it's certainly feasible.

Even if people come up with the whining based on it being too hard for them, and prefered the lightsabers to operate like they did on KoTOR, then a different method could be used, like having lightsabers hack away a limb based on, say, targetted attacks + critical hit elements.

I like this idea. Targeted attacks could be a way of making sabers more deadly, but their critical chance would need to be better assuming all weapons had this ability (unless it's unique to lightsabers). This would also introduce more tactics. However, I'm not sure they'd implement it given the focus on realtime combat. Targeted damage is more suited to turn-based like Fallout.

  11. Vorpal swords are fine in theory but when they are used against you they lead to an awful lot of reloads if your unlucky.

Yeah, that's always the problem, it's nice to use them on your enemies but not so good when they're used against you. ;)

That being said, I don't think lightsabers were implemented all that well. They felt like glorified swords and not a lethal energy weapon. If they didn't "glow" they'd be no different to a blade.

Upgrading them with crystals was a nice touch, especially the 2 super crystals - HotG and MotF. At least this increased their power.

I'm not sure what the solution is - extra damage, vorpal, or simply nerfing melee weapons to compensate - but lightsabers should be more deadly somehow.

Jedi Academy is a good example of "realistic" saber combat.

  12. Playing a Jedi wasn't quite as satisfying as I expected. Don't get me wrong I love using their force powers (especially dark side devil.gif) but I was very disappointed with lightsaber combat.

It just didn't feel like you were using a weapon that is literally pure energy, able to slice and dice your opponents with ease. Melee weapons were almost as good. Yeah, this was a balance issue -- you can't expect to kill everything with a single hit from your saber, that would be too easy, but I would like a % chance for instant death (10% would be fine).

  13. I would just have loved the option of a "sneaky"/Obi Wan way (sort of like in Thief) to get to the final destination.

I think the closest you get to that is when you use Mission to free your comrades on the Leviathan! That had a similar feel to Obi-Wan sneaking around, even if your friends were locked up and not blasting stormtroopers like Han and Luke.. hehe.

Providing a "sneak" option near the end where you can reach the final enemy without killing anyone, would be very unusual. Fighting hordes that pour from every orifice is the normal method... :)

  14. hmm, a difficult choice, but I think I'd have to choose option 1. The escort -- mainly because all the others have been done to death, especially options 2, 3 and 7.

PS:T & KotOR are obvious for #7 but Sanitarium is another great example. An underrated classic which you literally play inside your own tortured mind. I bet most people have never heard of this adventure game? It has some very devious puzzles and twisted situations that leave you feeling as crazy as the main character...

  15. If there is a Master/Padawan relationship in KotOR2, I'd prefer it if you were the master and given the option to take on an apprentice when you reach a certain level. It shouldn't be forced upon the player. That would have the potential to annoy some people like the mini games in KotOR.

As for dialogue, I hope it's going to be more serious this time around. Most of it was fine, but those sickly sweet jedi lines were cringe-worthy. Jedi don't talk like that. The lies you say to the council on dantooine are also cheesy. It's amazing they couldn't see through them: "anything to further the light" and crap like that.

Oh yeah, EP2 has some of the worst dialogue in movie history. Just thought I'd say that... :)

  16. Taste is one of those things that people rarely share 100%. Mine is just different in this case. A brilliant crpg would have offered alternatives

Fair enough... but I think the purpose of spawning enemies (on the Star Forge) is to create an epic feel that would be lost if you simply went through a few doors, destroyed some droids, and there was Malak waiting for you.

Consider for a moment the final section of PS:Torment, when you're in the Fortress of Regrets and the True Shadows are hunting you down - imagine if you immediately confronted the Transcendent One without facing them? Yes you can avoid the shadows, but they are there for the same reason as the Dark Jedi - another obstacle before the main enemy. It's a matter of taste, like you said, but almost all games become hack n' slash during the final stages.

Now the guy that played Carth -he was *really* annoying.

I'm not a fan of Carth, but he was a well-written and performed character. He was just too annoying. If that was Bioware's intention then they succeeded admirably. I'm unsure what the point of his negative attitude was. Not trusting people shouldn't automatically make you a whiner. The actor did a fine job given the material. Not much to work with there other than to complain most of the time.

  17. Oh, and the voiceacting was outright bad in most cases. Jennifer Hale really disappointed.

I can't agree with that. The voice acting was almost perfect. Perhaps the most impressive in any game to date. The actors fit their characters like a glove, with Jennifer Hale being one of the best. I certainly wasn't disappointed by any of the voices.

Oh, and I positively hated the end part with the constantly respawning enemies, sheesh guys, what were you thinking.

I actually quite liked this part, which is strange since I dislike mindless action in an RPG, but the relentless attacks made it clear you were now a force to be reckoned with, with waves of jedi and soldiers falling before your power. Admittedly, this slaughter works best if you've chosen the dark side. I felt it was a chore as a lightsider, only there to slow your progress, but dark-side it's great to mow down all those enemies.

  18. I think if its a sequel it really shouldnt continue on the same storyline or characters..

Yes, I think you're right. You could still have references to the original story, Revan & Bastila, and maybe even reuse certain characters (HK-47.. :) ) but it's not a good idea to directly continue the story. It would be quite tricky anyway, since the ending was very different for light or dark. How would the sequel start after that?

  19. hmm, I'm not really a fan of cute graphics - especially in RPGs - I much prefer realistically drawn characters and locations.

Final Fantasy 6 is fairly cute, but I think that was more because of SNES's limited graphics than design. It's still a great game.

Come to think of it, one of my all-time favorite RPGs is cute as hell -- Seiken Densetsu 3 (Secret of Mana 2) . This game is so cute it'll make you puke. Try not to laugh when you first see Rabites bouncing around.

Btw, I tried Zelda on Gamecube, and I find it almost too cute to play. I'm not likely to complete it any time soon.

  20. This is good news if true. And with all the rumors now pointing towards KotOR2 I'd be surprised if it wasn't. Not an actual confirmation, I agree, but as close as you can get.

Obsidian making the sequel almost guarantees that their first game is successful. A solid foundation for a new company. KotOR 2 will sell by the truckload.

KotOR is an immensly popular game, on both PC & Xbox. You could do a lot worse than a sequel. I don't see it as a Bioware hand-me-down at all - more like a vote of confidence.

Anyway, let's wait and see. Confirmation, or denial, is just around the corner.

  21. I've replayed KotOR more than any other RPG. Not bad for a "console" game.

In fact, it's one of the few games that I play through then instantly start again. The rich story and well performed characters give it a movie feel that is quite intoxicating. And just like any good movie, a single viewing is never enough.

RPGs for console need not be simple. Morrowind is a fairly complex RPG and sold well on Xbox.

  22. btw, I've been wading through Baldur's Gate the last few days, and frankly, I don't know whether I'd want another RPG like this. The huge maps that take an eternity to reveal are very tedious after KotOR's tight structure. (BG2 was an improvement in that regard).

BG's story is good, and the maps certainly encourage exploration, but the lack of focus seems dated somehow, with most areas just an excuse to kill monsters to increase your level. I prefer KotOR.

Story-driven RPGs need focus. They can still be 'deep' (like PS:Torment) but they tend to be linear by nature. KotOR made this even more apparent. However, if Delaware is KotOR 2 I would certainly hope for more freedom this time around.

  23. KotOR is a port from the Xbox, but a very good one.

Just like Halo on PC is a port, but a very bad one.

Ports are not a sign of quality, the original design is. And KotOR would never be like a traditional PC RPG with its Xbox roots. It was no less enjoyable for that though.

  24. In fact, it would have been better to make Korriban only available after the Leviathin

Korriban should be done last, but what happens to all those dialogue choices (especially with Uthar & Yuthura) if you go before the Leviathan? I assume they would not happen, which definitely makes Korriban less effective than going as Revan.

The 2 Sith masters at the academy are the most interesting characters in the game for me, and even acknowledge who you are (after the Leviathan).

I only wish you had more control over your character at this point than being forced to wait for Bastila at the temple. There's no reason why you'd need her to follow the dark-side path and kill Malak. But she was needed for the story.
