Pointy Hats

I do have sharp canines, but I'm usually not blue unless it's really cold outside. I'm extremely happy with the portrait, especially since everyone else seem to like it as much as I do. Even RPGCodex was nice to me. This is one of the source pictures used. It's a few years old, I have even less hair now so I usually just shave everything off, Heisenberg style. I hope the AI will take into account strategies like denying an enemy Moonwell by casting a Malignant Cloud on top of it. Bonus points if you have different AI profiles, so an aggressive one might ignore the damage taken and "dive" to the Moonwell if it thinks it might kill a PC in the process with the stamina gained, while a cautious/defensive/fearful AI hangs back. Doing AI for this game will probably be very challenging, but fun. I would love if that is available for modding (but I understand it might not be possible). I seem to recall Josh mentioning the intense yet strategic battles of MOBA games like Dota 2 being an inspiration? If not, they should be. There is a huge source of spells and item mechanics to draw inspiration from, and lots of pro matches to see how even seemingly weak spells can interact in interesting ways and turn even the most challenging skirmishes around if used creatively. That's interesting to actually see a source photo...

Hey there! Yes all of the portraits are painted on top of the reference photos we receive. I usually take the photo, shift things around for composition sake and start painting away. It's a huge time saver, and I get the likeness and subtle expressions for free. I agree with you on both of points, will try to hit those if I have time. Thanks for the feedback, you have a good eye! Well if they are peoples photos, that fella who's blue and yellow with sharp teeth must get a few odd looks around town. No wonder he stays in playing computer games.

I think the D&D influence is clear to see, but that's great. They've taken all the best bits of everything over the years and improved on everything which can be improved on. Their attention to detail is infinitely better than regular games, because they know from experience all the good parts and all the bad parts of similar games. They are doing exactly what i want them to do. There are always going to be similarities somewhere along the line, spells have always been done before in one way or another over they years, it is a computer game after all. It's clear the effort they are putting in to make everything more varied and adding all the nice subtle touches. I always loved Bigby's Forceful Hand, Bigby's Clenched Fist whatever they were, i'm over the moon to see they've used that influence. Why the hell not? It's all absolutely excellent; their love of the genre and passionate attention to detail and commitment shines through. It amazes me sometimes people will criticise the tiniest things here or there, moaning about grass or something; i guess some people are just never happy. Fantastic effort thus far, i absolutely love it. I love it so much, i'm actually bothering to write this drivel! Ps I'm still hoping for a badass (male) Aumaua Barbarian (fighter would suffice) as the last charcter ) Pps And i'll always be angry there isn't more wilderness levels ( Ppps Thanks for replying earlier BAdler, that was a nice touch. You guys probably underestimate quite how important this game actually is to people like myself. I've always hated the modern RPGs, all effects but no heart or soul. I have, quite literally, been dreaming of this game since finishing Baldur's gate 2. And i really, really do spend a considerable amount of time dwelling on what that last companion might be and whether it's an Aumaua (if indeed i have the other seven correctly figured). It will be a large weight off my shoulders when i finally find that stuff out...

This is what i meant by almost. I cant pin point detail, not sure what or why, but this doesnt sit well with me. Moment I saw it. Just a silly feeling. I must have carried different idea or expectation how those forces work. For some reason being wiz and personally shape the magic felt like certain definition of wiz to me. Oh well, I guess Tauron will be exception to the rule Anyway, great update, carry on guys! Think of it that the Druids and Priests have powers sent directly through them by their deities or what have you, whereas the Wizard is using his skills, knowledge, grimoires and rituals, incantations etc. to harness and manipulate the magical forces around him; a conductor so to speak. At least, that's what i shall do...

It's just so perfect. To say i cannot wait is an understatement. I absolutely love the Grimoire, i've always thought those big wizard's tomes are cool, always wanted one. Inspirational to actually let my wizard have his own grimoires. I've been waiting 39 years for such a thing. Deep, deep joy. Ps When on earth are you going to tell us about the Aumaua?! Pps Who/what is the Devil of Caroc?!

Is certainly an intriguing name. I rather like that. I'm assuming it's a companion character? I'm hoping for a whopping great Aumaua barbarian. When are you going to put me out of my misery Obsidian? Ps Do you realise i quite literally count down the hours between updates? Gutted to read no update this week, that completely spoilt my coffee this morning.

Finally, someone else said it. If by sexist you mean i wouldn't want only girls and bald old people next to me if i was fighting huge beasts, you are absolutely correct. I'm obviously a really bad, evil person then. Shock, horror, somebody thinks men are occasionally larger and tougher than women typically!!! Call the police, phone the newspapers, what an outrage!!! Burn him at the stake!!! You are simply a sheep. Try thinking for yourself one day. And try being honest for a change. Don't let the media and the politicians tell you what you can think. Let's get the lie detectors out and ask do you really think there is no difference in strength and aggression levels between an average man and an average women? Only one truthful answer there, so you're either sexist or a liar. Undoubtedly both, like everybody else. And do you really think video game sales are evenly split 50% to males, 50% to females? Yeah, right, i believe you lol You've been listening to too many bloody politicians mate. I don't feel i'm being particularly out of order by wanting one, just a single solitary one, large, scary, grizzled buggur in my party. Only in 2014 do i get insulted by random fascists who know nothing about me because of a simple wish to have just a single, solitary tough fighter. I suppose i must be racist as well? Hell, i'd better tell my wife and daughter i don't like them any more. Have you ever actually met any women? I'm assuming not. Let me tell you straight off, they generally don't like fighting monsters with swords. Fact. Ps And to the accusation of taking this all too seriously, i'll grudgingly apologise for that i suppose. It was meant to be kind of light hearted actually, not to be taken too seriously at all. Upon reading it back, it sounds worse than it was supposed to. That's just, i guess, written words lack emphasis and inflection, so they can be easily taken the wrong way. No body was meant to be upset. I mean come on though... a female Dwarf...ok, i can handle that. What next? Orlan Cipher? Cool. Not the strongest exactly. Let's see who's up next... a female priest...ok, surely next will be a warrior? Oh, a female Paladin. How about the wizard? Oh, it's a health and safety inspector. Next one has to be a beast of a character! No, it's a bald, old, unarmed man. I mean, seriously? I realise they are looking to avoid obvious cliches, but don't you yhink just maybe it's been taken a touch too far? Besides, i'm not so much disappointed at Obsidian as disgusted by the average IQ of my fellow homo sapiens for turning down extra content. Quite simply that's a lack of effective computational brain activity right there. I don't blame Obsidian; they generously offered more characters and levels.

You could just drop an alternate Eder portrait into the override folder and use him with a different face (the 3D models won't be detailed enough to show it up). You could then use Eder's portriat for your PC. (I'd be surprised to the point of ' ' if there were no override folder that allowed this kind of thing) Great, that'd do it...

Yes and it is a feature i was ecstatic about. It's just that the companions are such a large part of the game and ideally i'd have all my party composed of their people. Thus far, though, i've only liked a maximum of one, the Orlan Cipher fella. I hated the monk and the wizard completely, couldn't think of anything i want less than a female dwarf (sorry, but i like my dwarf to have a big beard and an even bigger axe and my elves to be female). I found the female priest distinctly unattractive and uninspiring (yes; i want a female character i fancy! It's a bloody fantasy game, of course i want a female that's nice looking!). The black paladin, i fear she's going to be a self righteous moaner like Jaheira was, don't think i want her either (although i'm reserving judgment). I can't use Eder, because he looks just like me and i'll already be in the party, so i can't use him even if i want to. I was banking on those new characters. Plus, obviously, tactically. Now i presumably won't have the option of a fighter or a chanter in my party, at least not without missing out on all the inter action and accompanying quests etc. It's a big loss from my perspective. Likewise more wilderness areas; once i've seen everywhere, the magic is over for me, it's as simple as that. I always try to keep some unexplored areas for as long as possible as i rarely play on once i've been everywhere on the map. To actually be offered this stuff for free and have so many of the people actually saying no is just...utterly incomprehensible to me. It reaffirms my complete lack of faith in humanity. I really do feel like i don't belong on this planet most of the time. Anyway, surely, it has to be a male Aumaua? The world has gone completely mad if there's eight characters and not one male warrior, i truly will despair. I wish they'd hurry up and put me out of my misery!

Eh. I voted against additional stretch goals and would happily do so again. Frankly, I even think the Endless Paths is a bit silly. Great story/characters, solid mechanics, and polish polish polish. That's a good game. Not content for the sake of content. For me, a wide selection of companions is of absolutely paramount importance. Good for replayability. Also, i'm fussy and frequently don't like the ones offered. That means i'll end up making my own and missing out on all of the in-party interactions. Assuming there was no compromise in the quality, i'd definitely prefer a larger choice of companions. (We don't know for a given that there would be a compromise in the quality of any extra materials. My personal opinion is that any extra stuff would be just the same quality). And implementing more wilderness levels just seems to me to be a ccost-effective, relatively quick, cheap and easy way to fill out the game, make the world seem more alive and larger to keep people able to encounter new areas for longer. Once i've seen the whole map, it's no longer exciting for me. Truly i don't see a negative anywhere along the line.

Ok, i'm still absolutely shattered to hear not much wilderness and no more companions. Devastating to hear people actually rejoicing this! Unbelievable, absolutely incomprehensible for me to be pleased with that. Mind boggling. If i could get my hands on you lot... So genuine question, because so far i'm seriously worried there is not one character other than the Cipher who looks palatable to me. I don't want an all female-no romance party of nobody tough at all. QUESTION: Will there be an Aumaua companion? If so, surely to Christ it will be male?! I'm having difficulty sleeping with the stress of it all... I really hope so, otherwise you will have genuinely spoilt for me something which i've been waiting for for nearly twenty years with this utterly ridiculous obsession for political correctness. Women are great, i like them. But bloody hell, what's wrong with a huge, tough, ugly barstirred once in a while? Ps On a positive note i love the look of the game, i just want at least one or two badass companions. Male Aumaua Barbarian and i'll be happy. Come on guys, don't let me down.

Absolutely gutted we can't choose from a full list of characters. I wish it wasn't suggested in the first place; it really will sully my enjoyment of the game now. Never will i have a female dwarf in my party, nor an old, bald monk or a wizard who resembles mr Bean. Female Paladin? Female Priest? Are you actually serious? Only in the world capital of politically correctness, California. It's like some sort of hideous PC who's who of the least badass adventuring party ever i'm sorry to say. Please, please God, let the Aumaua not also be a female! If the Aumaua (will there even be one?!!) is female as well, i just don't think i'll bother anymore. Will their be an Aumaua companion? Will it also be female? Please, give me at least one tough companion who i actually want next to me in a fight with monsters! And i didn't really enjoy Baldur's Gate 2 like i did Baldur's gate 1 : the fact there were basically no wilderness areas just made it seem more like a standard, linear dungeon crawl. Once there was nowhere new for me to explore, i quickly lost interest. At the beginning, i assumed there'd be plenty of wilderness. If you surveyed us lot to see who preferred Badur's Gate 1 to Icewind Dale, it would be virtually everybody. Loads of us consider exploration of new areas absolutely paramount. If the reasoning not to integate new stretch goals is because there weren't too many votes, couldn't Obsidian have made a vote that was easier to find/access? I'd say almost 80% of the voteing in favour was an overwhelming success. I can't believe, when the game is being released late anyway, so many people actually voted "no" for free additional content and characters. Obsidian will collect the extra money anyway! You just voted : " no, less free content, less exploration, less characters, more profit for the developers". Such mind blowing lack of intellect the general public have. Devastation. Remember the key point here: If this game is a resounding success, you'll presumably be able to release more. If this one fails, you might not. Not enough wilderness is a massive issue to probably half of us. Not enough palatable companions is another massive issue to the other half of us. There is no need to actually introduce more stretch goals, but that doesn't prevent you guys (Obsidian) from sticking in more at your own discretion as a nice surprise ) Ps And no "romance". What's the point at all of a female companion character if you don't get the chance to pull her? Do you honestly think the spread of people who'll be playing this is 50/50 male/female? I'd better be able to sate my lust at a tavern/brothel somewhere, or i'll be...distressed.

I understand why people may be wary of giving more money. However, surely, if the choice is simply: i vote "yes" to let those who have come late or do wish to pay more and expand the game do so ii. vote "no" and block any extra stuff. It would be sheer folly to block more companions/wilderness levels. If enough people show an interest, obviously Obsidian would go into a little more detail of what we'd be getting and you can then decide whether to invest more, or not (and still get more stuff anyway!). We know what we'd be getting, Obsidian already told us. More wilderness exploration areas and (three) more companions. If half of the people don't want it, there's no point in Obsidian bothering. Obviously, the better/bigger the game, the more chance of a success, the more chance of future games etc., so i really can't comprehend why anybody would vote no. I can see why people might not want to give more money, but not why they'd vote no to others doing so. To me, it simply isn't rational thinking. Voting no is simply saying "no, i'd prefer a smaller, inferior game for the same price".

A strange companion.
cornishr replied to GhoulishVisage's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
There are eleven classes and 11 races (if you discount the Godlike who aren't a true race). I think it's a fair bet there will be one cmpanion of each race/class. So there will be three new comanions, probably something like a fighter, a chanter and a druid extra. My guess is there is already an Ocean female Paladin And an Aumaua Barbarian already done but as of yet undisclosed. Then there'll be a Wild Orlan, a Wood Elf/ Dark Elf and another (Mountain) Dwarf most likely. I'm not expecting anything too wierd. -
Aaaaaggghhh!!!!! There is just no reason for anybody to vote no for goodness sake. If you don't wish to pay more, fine, then don't. Surely, though, let those people who may be new or want to give more be able to do so? The only possible negative is a slightly delayed release. Delayed release??!! We've been waiting over a decade, surely a couple more months won't hurt for what would then BE A BIGGER, LONGER GAME WITH MORE LEVELS AND MORE COMPANIONS!!! Vote yes and if you voted no, change your vote to yes. Obsidian don't you let me down now; i want my Wild Orlan...

What Obsidian are saying here, basically, is "would you like us to make the game bigger out of the money we get for the game?". It won't cost you anything! If you don't want to pay more, simply don't. But there are those people who would prefer to give more, or those (such as myself) who came late, never heard of kickstarter until recently, who want to put money in. Are some of you people seriously saying "no, let's not take more money and get a bigger game." That's so silly! If you've put in maybe 50 dollars already, you don't have to pay any extra and you'll get more companions and levels. Such an obvious decision. Yes yes yes. It's a win win situation. If they don't put the extra funding into the game, it'll just be extra profit. Good of them to offer this new stuff if you ask me. The only possible negative is a slightly delayed release. Big deal; we've waited years already, what difference will a couple of extra months mean? It'll mean a Wild Orlan Chanter and more lovely wilderness areas. mmmmmm, wilderness... So for goodness sake, see sense and vote yes!

Yes please, more game more game more game! I'd rather pay more/wait longer if i have to; what i want is the biggest game possible. Once i've seen all areas of a game, the excitement fades. Only while i have unexplored areas do i really love it. Truly the more areas, the better. More game whatever it takes!
