Thank you for verbalizing what had bothered me at the back of my mind, too, when I saw the design. It felt like something out of a browser game to me but I couldn't tell why. Thanks to you, now I know: because it's just upgradable stuff thrown onto a screen. Also, I've been to Eltz Castle so yay for choosing that as an example

This is a subjective call so there's no point arguing it. I'd feel just like you but to take another example from the Kickstarter realm, I also backed Godus and besides the game apparently being a big pile of F2P shіt, they also still don't even plan on releasing the promised Linux version anytime soon and it's been a year since the beta's been out for other platforms. That's enough for me to feel cheated, too, even though nobody ever promised a time frame. So technically, they are not in the wrong but practically, I'm just pissed (and that's even though I stopped looking forward to the game long ago). So my point is "you just made assumptions" is technically correct but then everybody does. You just assumed you'd live to see the Linux port even though nobody ever promised you that. All they said is that it would happen at some point. It happening this century was never promised Still, I think it's safe to assume that you assumed otherwise.

Let's put it this way, the availability of the Linux/Mac beta some weeks into the beta period most likely means that the final game will be available for all platforms from day 1. That's more than can be said from many a big studio who have much less of an excuse not to hire a couple of guys whose only job throughout the project it is to ensure that the game runs on all platforms. Linux ports are still much too rare to be really pissed at, say, Firaxis and 2K for releasing the next Civilization for Windows only and not even giving a release date for the other platforms (at least as far as I have seen so far) but it does annoy me. This delay, however, really isn't something to be anything but mildly disappointed about, especially given the fact there probably won't be much story in the beta that would force you to shut down your social media like a British Game of Thrones viewer.

Well, that's the problem: PC game developers still seem to approach "Mac and Linux support" as more of an afterthought. As in: "We'll develop it for Windows just like we always did, and then when it's almost done we'll start to think about porting concerns". And when that time comes, it usually turns out that Windows-specific assumptions were made along the way, and porting requires redesigning part of the code. With the result that it has sort of become industry standard to delay the Mac & Linux releases for a few weeks after the Windows one. I would wager that game developers could save themselves quite a bit of development cost (and customer disappointment) if instead, they'd consistently develop with cross-platformness in mind from the start (and briefly test their work-in progress on all platforms at each development milestone). But I guess they're still adapting to the increasingly multi-platform world that PC gaming is becoming. In time, they will surely learn... In time... Maybe you have more experience on large multi-platform projects than I do. I have only been involved in small cross-platform projects so far but my experience from those is that you don't need to make any assumptions for platforms to act up. Heck, even different configurations running the same OS do very strange things sometimes. If you read up, I was also kinda disappointed that there's a delay (even though it doesn't affect me as I didn't back the beta) but to say that this is a clear indication for sloppy development is not an assessment I share. It merely shows that testing on other platforms didn't have the same priority and was probably an afterthought. Would I have liked them to use some kind of cross-platform continuous integration setup? Sure. But I can also understand why a relatively small team doesn't have that kind of infrastructure.

Well, the delayed Linux release is bumming me out a bit. A few weeks can be a very long time when everybody's already talking about the game. Did you test any recent build in Wine? And would I be able to get my saves from the Windows to the Linux version once it gets out, either via Steam or by just copying them over? Edit: Oh well, never mind. I just realized that this beta is just for rich people anyway so I'm out no matter the platform.

No, what's done with is using the five Chinese elements for the sole purpose of not using the occidental four elements. I mean, seriously, the concept of the four classical elements arose at least about 4000 years ago. When did it get old, last year? "Oh man, 'earth, water, fire and air' ... that's soooo 2000 BC!"

I'd have to watch it more often to be sure, but to me it seemed as if the animation was exactly the same every time but the sound wasn't (possibly because it would be much more noticeable and annoying when the sound looped every few seconds than it is for the wave animation). So at one point it sounds as if there is still more water coming down when the spray animation is long over. Maybe it's a problem of finding enough wave sound samples that match the animation exactly.

Yeah, I think most people were fine with the restriction. The problem is that you only need very few individuals out of the tens of thousands of backers to let the whole idea go to **** with people being pissed, the press being pissed and everything just turning into a huge PR nightmare. And since the chance of having such a critical mass of idiots is exactly 1 for any group of people larger than 1000, it's just not even worth trying. I mean it's good Doublefine did try because now nobody ever has to try it again and they will just keep backers in the dark about things they absolutely don't want to see leaked. Entitled idiots is why we can't have nice things, as always.

From a pure gameplay point of view I can totally see the potential. I'm just saying that a set of things you can arbitrarily only do while there are enemies around always feels really odd. I'm always like "Ok, please let me declare a blood feud on that tree over there because I want to cast a spell! I just can't do magic while I'm not bashing someone's head in." But maybe we can pay peasants to let us use non-lethal force on them when we want to do magic

I was talking about buffing before the encounter of course because otherwise the whole strategy wouldn't make any sense, but: I totally missed that. That sounds a little bit stupid to me I have to say. Does this only affect spells that have a duration or also healing and stuff like that?

If buffing is so powerful, won't that encourage save scumming? Like Encounter Quick load Buff the hell out of your party Lazily obliterate enemies

Of course they are getting a percentage of the profits. If all goes according to plan, the better marketing will make the game sell so much more that it's a win-win situation in the end. And the reason why none of the media people asked for the details of the business deal is the same you aren't told but have to keep guessing: because companies don't talk about these things publicly. What's the point in asking if all you achieve is to look unprofessional and get a "We can't discuss the details right now" as an answer?

For those interested, the recording of the announcement of the Paradox partnership on GDC 2014 went online an hour ago: It really looks like they have a common vibe that goes beyond a business relationship (if you can look past the general social awkwardness of everyone involved that is ).

I always loved the inn design idea. It's obviously great for the backers who can get their ideas into the game but it's also great for everybody else since places that used to be very generic in other games (that tavern clone army in Baldur's Gate, God help me) will be very individualistic and have their own character.
