I don't know how easy it was, but Onyx most certainly is already built. Yes but unless they want New Vegas to go into a completely different direction I don't see how using it would be an advantage. With Fallout 3 framework, they've something to start with and can compile/test it on an established environment without hacking/programming all that stuff into Onyx again. Product differentiation is a pretty big advantage to overlook.

An engine change would also mean we'd have to wait 18-24 month more. No thanks, using the Fallout 3 engine has been a smart (and the obvious) decision. You might want to rethink that post. Onyx is already built. Granted, the art assets from FO3 may cut about 6 months off development time (not to mention costs).

My Mac Mini arrives in like a week, so I figured it's time to start getting excited about games again. What good PC games do you know of that come out in the future? I'm looking forward to: Diablo 3 Obsidian's Fallout Alpha Protocol Dragon Age It's not a big list. Surely I'm missing some things?

On the one hand, I want it now. On the other hand, I'm not quite ready to build the new pc I want to play the game on. Xmas 2009 would be awesome tho...2011 would have me gnashing my teeth. The flashy new graphics look good/are nice, but I only hope it has the same addictive quality of the previous Blizz games. I'm sure the Wizard will be the first I try. Mm. I think it's telling that Blizzard are saying it will run on low-end systems and not use DX10. I.e.: they like flashy graphics but it's not what's going to sell the game. :D

Hmm. I've never heard about sound problems in that manner. Have you tried switching sound drivers (e.g. between ALSA and PulseAudio)?

Oh well, good to see you (sort of) sorted it out. I just upgraded my laptop from Ubuntu 7.04 to 8.10 and the difference is amazing. I really like this all-brown theme in Gnome that (not the dodgy default brown one) and I've finally tried desktop effects (Compiz) - it's pretty fun and looks good. Once my beefed up mac mini arrives I'll try out games under WINE properly (this comp wouldn't run most of them on Windows let alone Linux), but so far JK2 and Jedi Academy (use Quake 3 engine) work perfectly. It also auto-detected my graphics card and installed nVidia's linux driver for me. Oh, and the tablet pen draws even better than on Windows! I still need to get the eraser working, though. I must have made a typo in X.org config.

Ah yes, the Linux heaven where you have to compile your own afterlife. It's hard to get started and a bit buggy at times but it makes it up by being ultra customizable. I run Linux (Ubuntu) and I've never compiled a programme (that wasn't my own) in my life). It also detects my laptop's hardware better than Windoze does. Ubuntu took Plug N' Pray and made it Plug N' Play. But yes, you're most probably correct for any distro other than Ubuntu. Moreover, ID software releases their games on Linux (e.g. Quake 4) and nobody has to compile anything! :D

And the awesome thing is this game will run on my Mac! Along with Warcraft 3, Diablo 1, and Diablo 2. **** I love Blizzard. Now if only they'd release their internal Linux builds of these games I'd be pretty much in heaven.

D3 has been on the board for at least a year now. This is its third year in production. I'm expecting it to come out 2010 or early 2011 at the very latest.

I generally hate prequels and BSG seasons 3 and 4 left me feeling apathetic to the BSG universe so meh.

Ahhh, I just found this for you Gorgon: http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting It explains printer compatibility on Linux. Some printers use Windows APIs which obviously means they won't work on Mac or Linux. The more reliable ones are unlikely to do this, however. Edit: it's got a searchable printer database, Linux drivers, installation instructions, etc.

Hmm. What printer is it? Normally Ubuntu detects it by default (plug and play), but otherwise there's likely a Linux version of the driver you can find. You can usually also use a driver for another printer and it'll probably work (a trick I learnt from Windows 95). Never count on that! Samm, you have to realise that not everybody has the same protection requirements as you. I don't have anything important on my machines that's not backed-up on external HD's, and I certainly don't have anything on my computers a hacker might find worth stealing from me. Most people I've met are the same; their main priority is avoiding performance slow-down from spyware and having their comp hijacked by ads. Things which anti-virus software is hopeless at handling anyway. Further, I generally format every year or so (which any sane person should) when every second Ubuntu distro comes, which tends to put a kink in a botnet's plans. As I said, your mileage may vary.
