  1. The big revelation was a surprising twist, sure, in that I certainly didn't predict it, but it wasn't an effective one. The motivation behind the engwithan manufacture of their counterfeit gods falls flat for me; a civilization that was (with the exception of its skill at animancy) less advanced than modern Eoran civilization proved the nonexistance of god(s) with such certainty that it altered the course of their civilization and the world... so we're dealing with a civilization that learned how to prove a negative (a logical impossibility) before it mastered metallargy, or chemistry, or invented the printing press. Not particularly convincing. Greeks were pretty much there - you don't need sophisticated technology to challenge rather simplistic concepts like "gods live on that mountain over there and are pretty much humans with superpowers" after all. Funny enough, with their philosophy being several levels above their religious reflection, hellenic culture significantly influenced early Christianity, so you can say that, in some sense, it was some Engwithan-ish twist. Imagine Romans had some wild Germania v.2 in place of Middle-East and Persian neighbours with their bubbling cauldron of religions - what happens when diminishing traditional cults can be supplanted only with all-too-familiar barbarian pantheons? Either Jove gets a reformation, Rome gets some home-made prophets of New God(s) or... you actually see ruling class in the same spot Engwithians landed. Both cases suggest that if there's certain technological level required, it has more to do with offering people a measure of safety and comfort plus spare time outside of work, which in turn results in intellectual advancement - Rome had both, but its ailing religion happened to find a substitution at the right moment. Watch out guys, we got a philosophy major in this bitch. He gonna learn everyone how they 'posed to be thinkin'. Engineering and neither of those are philosophers. I was speaking about the way it's done rather than what it is. I agree that the game does have themes that tie into disbelief and atheism, and Iovara is too much of a saint to be a great character, but that's a far cry from being as anvilicious as some here are portraying it, I think. That one is salvageable though. I didn't get any hints that her rebellion/heresy survived too long (mostly revolved around one city or city-state?), which means she didn't get to rule or even make difficult decisions. In a way it does make "saint" believable - it all depens whether they are killed before power corrupts them or, less dramatically, disillusionment and apathy sets in after too many choices with no positive outcome (see: Thaos?). History usually tends to favor heroes/martyrs/conquerors who die young, preferably before they screw something up or, even worse, show some human weakness.
  2. Why aren't you happy? The backer didn't get screwed. Isn't that what you wanted? I am not happy that he changed it but since he was not really under pressure i am totally fine with it. Also I am glad to hear Obsidian left him with the choice. So yeah I fine with this decision. Same, especially this replacement limerick being a well-deserved mockery. That said, while I am fine with what was done, I am disappointed that anything was done in the first place (->twitter promises). If a random "I am offended" twitteroo can slap Obsidian into action despite entire outrage being based on a delusion (given how everything about a man Firedorn slept with has been pulled from collective twitter's butt), then what should I expect them to do if eg. Polygon, as competent as usual, declares some future content "literally nazi"? If OE reacts proportionally to the current drama, they will be wiping hard drives while self-flagellating to appease accusers. Also, this "wasn't vetted" explanation smells a bit - if anything, it was vetted all right, but by twitter. With piles of immersion-breaking content appearing on gravestones you'd think either nothing was vetted or there are some interesting priorities for this game, the kind where immersion is secondary to manufactured (as in: "I just need to add non-existing detail of my choosing") offenses.
  3. It was obviously taunting and therefore innocent. I read it on Kotaku.
  4. Hm, strange, I ran into this issue myself - but ragekilling Verzano after the fight worked, quest updated/completed just fine. I have no idea whether paladin becomes recruitable, though - haven't checked so far. There was something strange about the attackers as well. I tried to gather remains from the corpse of a woman who commanded the rest, but got a window with... no loot. Clicked "loot all", then remains disappeared. I left the building, got back in and found interact-able remains with a bunch of coins in the same spot.
  5. Oh, I wasn't really arguing with you specifically, just tugging on a thread I thought was interesting. Incredibly, there's actually room for interesting discussion in this thread! We live in strange times, when a joke that I would ordinarily roll my eyes at and dismiss as being a little offensive (!) somehow provokes interesting discussion. Maybe that backer somehow IS a legitimate artist! It is hilarious, when you think about it. Imagine all those backers, trying to come up with something memorable, anxiously refining their ideas before submitting. Then, out of the blue, comes someone with a silly lymerick and gets everything. This alone deserves some special badge or Steam achievement
  6. They are not - though would really, really like to be. Or, if we're not into binary things, they are slowly getting there. Luckily, it's slow enough so it's still possible and cost-effective to tell whatever Outrage Spreaders, in some kind words, to go to hell. ... ...unless someone would like to accomodate my grievances about PoE featuring not only killing a god (offending pretty much any monotheist with a concept alone), but also cultural appropriation. I mean, killing a peasant who claims to be god's messenger *with fire*? That's Joan of Arc all over again, with a man stealing her identity. Damn it, Obsidian, no one is getting fooled, this is clearly "misogyny by proxy".
  7. Why? Joke 1.0 is about a dead man with... some issues. Joke 2.0 would be about a dead racist. The real reason both conversations would indeed be happening is somewhere between "Twitter Drama" based on a false premise and companies caving in to dishonest clique that desperately needs media presence (predictable outcome). You are trying too hard to manufacture a difference - but still, at least you make more effort with your claim than anyone who initially decided Joke 1.0 was -phobic.
  8. The hell? When was it even established that epitaph in question was "transphobic" (or whateverphobic, given how idiotic language bending has become in this "controversy") in the first place? Some despicable fool "tweeting about it" is nowhere near "confirmation", I kinda hoped Obsidian hadn't lowered their standards so dramatically. Someone has slept with "a woman who turned out to be a man"? Could've been anything. He drank so much he didn't even notice. Or he got tricked by his male admirer with a disputable concept of consent. Or both. Or magic. Or aliens. Like... there's zero material that actually supports anything closer to "and that was a person who identified as a female". Given how Professionally Outraged operate, skipping this step is like extending additional invitation to be bullied by silently acknowledging they actually have a point. Then there's the function this tiny piece has, both in-game and in-universe. I consider the entire concept of having monuments with backer material a necessary evil, a tiny one at that - but there's like... 90% of them that are more out of place. This one is actually pretty good, especially given how weak competition is, but not only because of that. We actually get a crude example of humor, the kind that was popular for millennia (and, no matter how "sophisticated" we get, still is). Even bloody Greeks were having their high-brow tragedies AND comedies filled with the lowest kind of humor imagineable. This is the sort of song you would expect to hear in some tavern, because: A. it's simple and silly B. it has sex in it. Putting silly things on tombstones is another thing that has been going on for ages, though obviously not too often - still, it's not merely a "classic RPG joke". Now, I won't pretend to know PoE world isn't some post-gender universe where entire society is sanitized and conditioned against such suggestive themes, but nothing in this game has been hinting towards it... So, seriously, Obsidian, try to remember you have a valid way out. The kind that is also one of those benefits of having no publisher, associated PR minions and spineless suits around. You know, thanks to having backers and such *hint* *nudge*. I don't expect you to say what this kind of parasites actually deserves to hear again and again until they realise they have no claim over any content creator. But for crying out loud, don't negotiate with them and don't leave any impression there's any credence to this bull****. Oh, wait...
