  1. Fighter, Paladin, Chanter, whatever. What I meant was any "non-traditionally melee" class. It's okay that some classes are better suited to the role than others (that's what different classes are for), but the question is if those other classes can be made at least competent in a defensive role - ideally while still being able to make at least some use of their unique class abilities as well. BTW, is it true what Endrosz said, that damage values are much higher than the DR values of even the best armor?
  2. Sensuki: See my subsequent posts. I'd like to see an examination of non-Fighter characters that combine both high deflection (as high as they can get, that is) and decent armor, and see how they hold up going into a melee.
  3. Anyway, it's funny that people are saying "DT inevitably leads to high damage values", but now what you're telling me is that wait, the damage values are actually way higher than the DT values of the armor! If that is indeed the case, then it's an easily correctible balance issue. So maybe DT is fine after all?
  4. The damage is so high on the stronger mobs it makes DT a pointless investment. If the average damage I receive is 10, then it's worth to don an armor which gives a DT of 4. If the average damage I receive is 30, then wearing that DT 4 armor is rather pointless, you should just go for full offense by not reducing your action speed via armor, and try to CC the enemy instead of relying on armor. Per-hit damage is too high, that goes both for character damage incl. spells and monster damage. Well, I said in tandem. That is, you always need to invest in both DT and Deflection. Just one of them won't save you, so examined in isolation they don't seem like "worthwhile investments".

  6. I'm reminded of how people were laughing earlier at how the game encourages you to use "naked mages" or whatever. Maybe the high damage is a hint that you should consider wearing armor? In general it seems like people ITT are disregarding the DT/DR portion of the equation and would like to rely entirely or mostly on their Deflection, but perhaps those two stats are meant to work in tandem - a dual replacement for AD&D's almighty Armor Class.
  7. I think people might end up being pleasantly surprised by this Kickstarter, at least in certain aspects. Sorry, can't say more. We'll see what happens tomorrow.
  8. In practice: http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/70392-solo-insanity-u-cant-touch-this/ Well, the other three defenses are really just an evolution of the saving throws from D&D, which in the original games weren't really considered "first class citizens" in your character sheet compared to the almighty Armor Class. The systems were made more symmetric for PoE, but I'm not sure there was ever an intention to make them symmetric in terms of their in-game usage frequency.
  9. Just FYI, this game was actually first announced all the way back in August. More info here: http://www.rpgcodex.net/tags.php?id=1452
  10. http://www.tsi-games.com/ Launching on March 11th: https://twitter.com/TSIGames/status/575053465686163458 It's back-to-back oldschool Kickstarters these days. Vote 'em up on GOG: http://www.gog.com/wishlist/games/seven_dragon_saga
  11. Well, one of Sensuki's arguments against the engagement mechanic is that in the Infinity Engine games, simple positioning was enough to achieve an identical effect, so...
  12. I don't understand why you wouldn't put your wizard in armor if you don't want him to be squishy. It's dull? Tough cookies. I'm also curious about why some people seem to think that "+20 defense is useless if your defense is low". No, it's not useless, you're still getting hit less. Does it have to be all or nothing? Anyway, none of this sounds particularly different from the traditional class differences in the IE games? So it seems to me that the target IE audience would be okay with it.
  13. It was not. The only thing Wasteland 2 backers had seen of the game at that point was a vertical slice video: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/wasteland-2/posts/401940 The beta came out at the end of that year.

  15. Btw, the "hard engine" excuse isn't ridiculous at all. They were really talking specifically about adding entire new areas to the game, which is what a lot of people mean when they talk about "modding" - creating entire new worlds and adventures, not merely tweaking an existing game. The Infinity Engine games had very, very few mods that added new areas to the game, because they were hard to make. PoE's are even harder.
  16. Not really?...I think this may be one of those "seeing what you want to see" things. Anyway, like I said, mods exist. People are already making them.
  17. The money is irrelevant. Pillars of Eternity never actually had a "modding tools" stretch goal (don't confuse it with Wasteland 2). They promised nothing other than "accessible file formats" which is pretty vague, but not untrue (check out some of the mods people have been making in the beta forum).
  18. We sent a guy to visit OtherSide personally. Here's his report: http://www.rpgcodex.net/content.php?id=9788
  19. Well, that's certainly a novel argument. But I really don't think anxiety works that way. If anything, the knowledge that there is "secret knowledge" out there about making the "right" choice only increases the passive player's anxiety. Because he'll constantly agonize about the possible long-term negative effects of making a "wrong" choice. When there's balance between choices, players might be anxious about them when they arrive, but when they finally get over their anxiety and choose something, they can put that feeling behind them and move on with the game without worrying too much.

  21. SHOTS FIRED SHOTS FIRED https://forums.swordcoast.com/index.php?/topic/123-will-you-have-live-stream-this-month/&do=findComment&comment=954 If it's past early march then you definitely need to do something on March 26. Take away some attention from the Pillars of Eternity Can't you toxic guys just stay on the RPG Codex and limit this kind of needlessly offensive posts to that forum? Or is it now a standard behaviour of self-proclaimed old-school CRPG hardcore fans to behave like total douches on every possible occasion? Jesus... Hey, he's not one of ours
  22. People are already modding the game as we speak
  23. WRONG! Here, from the Wasteland 2 Gamepedia FAQ: But didn't Electronic Arts own it? The rights to the title were owned by Electronic Arts, but when they expired, Konami registered the trademark for use with their Yu-Gi-Oh series. In 2003, InXile acquired the rights to the Wasteland title from Konami. http://wasteland.gamepedia.com/Wasteland_2_FAQ I buy EA games. I have no problem with EA in general. I just do not think EA - as a major corporation and publisher - should be able to "free ride" and use Kickstarter to fund their corporate businesses. I'd be equally upset if Activision or Ubisoft attempts to hijack Kickstarter to fund their game or a game that is owned by them. Kickstarter should be OFF LIMIT for big corporations. See the post above this.
