I agree. I thought FO, for example, was much more fun when I was running in leather armor with a 10mm pistol and a sawed off. That was sweet. By the time I got the power armor and the TPR I was pretty bored.

I personally would love to see a return to longer games that you really get to sink your teeth into. this idea that shorter games are better than longer games because they are essentially the distilled and refined essence of a longer game is bizarre.

On what possible grounds are you basing that claim? Josh is a fun guy to talk with on the boards and he always seems to have ideas and he MAY turn out to be the greatest crpg designer ever, but at the moment he doesn't any particular track record of creating awesome games, unless you consider a string of unfinished games and half-finished games and mediocre rehashings of a great track record. I'm sorry if you got the impression I was making a statement that Josh is the best games designer ever, Josh wouldn't make it, and I wouldn't... I've followed his efforts for many years mostly because I've been waiting to see ideas that he's had, implemented. Note that implementation is usually partaken by someone other than the Designer. I can't think of a Designer who's had ideas, which constantly challenge and push against the boundaries of a games genre, Josh atleast attempts to do this. He has talent, as do many people working at Obsidian, a project like this is good because people will get to see the extent of that talent. Oh and if I ever play a game which is finished I'll let you know, and it's certainly fair to say that Josh has worked on a bunch of unreleased games, of which may i add is no fault of his own. That's a daily occurance in the games biz period. So lets go over what i said, I (that's me, nobody else, just my humble self), personally percieve (Oh look I am stating an opinion held, by myself)Josh (I think we know who he is now) as one of the best (he's not alone there are OTHERS!!!) in regards of CRPG's (Just the one genre) currently active in the industry (he is active in the industry, he's working on projects) I hope you can now come to the greater and englightend understanding that I am simply saying, from all my vast knowledge and experience, that Josh has some good ideas! DUH! what?
-
Well, I'm hoping the Alien crpg will give JOsh the feather in his cap he desrves after getting the shaft on a couple projects. The mod I'm not to sure on. Most large mods never get finished. Which Josh knows perfectly well of course, so maybe this will be different.

Baldur's Gate - whole series for ten quid
Slowtrain replied to Walsingham's topic in Computer and Console
I remember fighting gibberling 76,238, decided there were more entertaining ways to spend my time, like having a tooth drilled, and then uninstalling the game. -

I never actually finished Baldur's Gate. I played it several times, both alone and with TotSC, but I hit the level cap long before I came close to the end of the game, and once my party stopped leveling, I lost interest immediately. Was there a story to the game? I can't remember. Somethign about bad iron in the mines of Nashkel or some other drivel. Or was I looking for a water chip? Darned if I know. -

Sucks may be a tad strong, but it IS pretty freaking boring. I threw out all my IE games a while back, time moves on and all that. Except for my PS:T cd's which make outstanding coasters. -
I want to smell an NPC's BO and farts. That would be a freaking gaming revolution. NPC: Hey, <pc_name>, how are you. Oh wait, oops, I farted. PC: Ewwww. Yeah, you don't need to say anything. I can smell it. Stop smiling. Weirdo. gogo gaming revolutions!

I like the compass. *shrugs* ANyway, I agree with Aegeri that Daggerfall is one of the best ever, but we're never going to see a game like it again so probnably best not to dwell on it. I have it installed on an old laptop and stil play it from time to time! I think the agression toward SS should be toned down a bit. One person is hardly responsible for either the entire content of a game or the PR policies of a software company. SS is here as an Obsidian poster not as a Bethsoft rep. IF he wants to talk about hsi experiences with Oblivion and Bethsoft, great. It's fun to hear, but I think throwing boulders at him is probably over doing it. My biggest problem with Oblivion is the leveling speed. Its bizarre. Also the thieves with Daderic armor. Silly.

Woooeee this version of the mod is tough! Not so much on the tactical map, but on the strategic map. My held secters are getting assailed by wave after wave of elite counterattacks. As long as I have a team in sector I can hold it, but my militias get totally hosed by themselves. They lose battles where they outnumber Deidranna's soldiers 40-20 with regularity. They've even lost a couple where they outnumber the soldiers 60-20! And this is in freaking Drassen still in the early part of the game. Not that I'm complaining. But its making the game a little static, since I've basically been fighting for control of Drassen and the nearby SAM for the first thirty days of the campaign. And I don't have enough money to buy another team and open up a second front as ity were, so I'm basically stuck in a stalemate with the queen. She can't take Drassen back (although she periodically is able to take back a sector or two, usually when she attacks both the airport and the mine sectors concurrently), but I can't leave. I could sacrifice Drassen and move the whole team to Cambria, but I would be in the same boat there, even worse since the counterattacks are much tougher there than in Drassen. I think I'm going to start a new game and change the ini to allow my miltia to be trained to veteran status. Maybe they can do a better job holding sectors by themselves. Not that starting a new game is a bad thing; this damn game is like crack.
-
After you finish training the regular miltias all the way up to experience (all light blue) at $750 per session, you'll get a message asking if you want to train militia for $2250. If you say yes, you'll train a squad of 5 patrolling miltia which will appear outside of town in adjacent sector. Last version I played, each town sector you owned simpyl generated them for free at midnight of each day. That was a little unbalancing since it wasn't long before you had hundreds of militias roaming around for basically free. I can't really afford the $2250 at this point, so I've only been able to train one patrol which was quickly eliminated. If you change some of the other options in the ini, this might happen differently. For example if you set Can_train_veteran = true or change some of the training costs, the procedure and costs for training patrols may change as well. I kept all the default settings for miltia, so I can only train them to experienced level. If you can trian to veteran level, you probably have to train all the town garrisons up to veteran before you can traain patrols.

Hi Kaiden! The only save I had from that time was an in-battle save and that slot gets overwritten each battle as needed so its long gone. But I've auto-resolved several battles since then and no problems. The only thing that was unusual about that particular autoresolve in which the done button didn't work was the large number of enemies (there were about a hundred involved to start which is more than I've ever seen before) and the fact I retreated my mercs from battle and left the remaining militia to fend for themselves which is something I rarely ever have to do. All my autoresolutions since then have been straight miltia on enemy battles that my mercs weren't involved with. And no problems there. It may just have been a random thing. Just some general comments: The mod is still really great. I haven't played it since a couple major relases ago. It defintily seems ramped up in difficulty a bit since then. I've been playing on Expert difficulty with the same custom ini settings which I've been using for a while now. The only things I change from the defaults is that I give Deidranna unlimited troops on Expert level and set her to agressive. Since I finished Drassen I've been facing almost exclusively elites everywhere. Even her regular counterattacks against Drassen and the Drassen SAM are almost entirely elites with a few red shirts in the mix. Last time I played there were some elites this early in the game but not this many. I'm not complaining though! I love getting all the good gear the elites carry. I have Bobby Ray's set to normal so its nice to be able to grab an M16A1 early on! Although the elite drops seem a little toned down from the last version I played. Which is cool, too. Having to train the roaming militia patrols rather than getting them for free is a good change. It helps balance that out quite a bit. As I've always said this is the damn best mod for any game I've ever played. It keeps the feel and spirit of the game totally intact while adding to and enhancing the entire experience.

Have you checked around the internet to see if you can find a boxed copy of Jag 2 gold? Last time I looked, which was a while ago admittedly, it was pretty easy to find for around $10 US. If you are OK with ordering over the internet, that may be the way to go. I'd send you a copy but I only have three!

For those who want to know Bear's Pit is the unofficali home for Jagged Alliance on the internet: http://www.ja-galaxy-forum.com/ Steam and 1.13: http://www.ja-galaxy-forum.com/board/ubbth...age/1#Post57712 So far, i've only found one bug with the current 1.13 version which is that the done on the Auto Resolve screen failed to work after I auto-resolved a battle after retreatign my mercs from the Drassen mine following Diedranna's large counter attack leaving my game hanging at a finshed auto reolved battle with no way to do anything. I went back to a save, fought the battle a bit longer, tried it again and it still didn't work. Eventually after a bunch of tries, the done button finally worked. I don't know if it was just a random thing or if there was something happening in that auto-resolution that was causing the hang. When I first tried to auto the battle there were 87 enemies left, when I got it to finally work there were only about 45 or so, so maybe it was just the large number of enemies. Although I've auto resolved big battles before in prior versions and never had a problem. I'll keep an eye on it. Other than that, awesome as ever!

You pre-ordered Gothic 3, too, didn't you? Have you even played that yet?

You know those people who set through The Fellowship of the Ring 50 times from end to end and write down all the continuity errors that they find and then make a website called "1001 Continuity Errors in The Fellowship of the Ring" and post all their findings to it... yep. Hey, if that's where people want to spend their time, OK. But it doesn't hinder my or most people's thorough enjoyment of the movie.

Speaking of which, I should point out I wasn't trying to be antagonistic towards you in my previous post. I honestly smiled at your dismissal even if I find merit in the criticism towards that whole Deathclaw debacle I just find that these issues will always be interpreted differently but there shouldn't be such a polarizing effect on people. It's important to some, not to others. As you say, whatever floats someone's boat. The problem is with those that want to sink other people's boats. I wasn't offended, RP. I enjoy your posts.

It could be argued, as I already did somewhere else, that the splinter faction in Tactics isn't an entirely inconsistent perspective on the original Brotherhood of Steel. There were some instances in the original Fallout where Maxson himself didn't seem to be that happy with the Elder's points of view, and in Fallout 2 it is said by a Brotherhood of Steel member that they are no longer as powerful as they once were. It's not a terribly complex exercise to imagine some reasons for a falling out, nor a consequence to those divergences of opinion leading to what we found in Tactics, so as a complaint, it's not very strong. But pointing out that the appearance of fully-functioning fossil fuel powered vehicles and installations doesn't exactly jive well in a setting where the world went to war because there was no fossil fuel to go around isn't exactly vague, and neither is pointing out that Deathclaws were a highly mutated form of chamaleons and not a furry amalgam of different species which could be mind-controlled by wasteland beastmen. Fanatics or not, most people that took those issues to heart have explained in-depth why they believe their portrayal wasn't accurate. And it's their decision to take those non-cannon situations as they want to. I'm sure there are some who take it upon themselves to not let those poorly handled elements affect their enjoyment of the game (ie, bask upon the glory of CrashGirl's kindergarten-styled "lolz furry!" dismissal of that particular point), but gamers who enjoyed Fallout for its (mostly) well developed and internally coherent setting probably won't be as accepting. Or are we trying to blame them for not appreciating games in the same way we do? Because y'know, that would make sense! You know, I think its totally cool to take a game this seriously. I mean hey, whatever floats your boat. But to expect others to take it this seriously, and even worse, get all pouty when they don't, is a bit out there. Note that is not directed at you specifically, RP, even though I quoted you.

Actually if you look closely you will notice that its not hair at all, but feathers. That's right, FEATHERY deathclaws. Like viscious chickens. Not only a ghastly canonical violation, but they make great quilts and pillows.
-
Yeah, those furry deathclaws. Holy ****, the indiginity of it all. I'm amazed anyone can sleep at night.

Where's my giant anti-Fallout mallet? I know I left it around here somewhere.

That's because if you don't metagame and max your pc development, you get hammered later in the game. I think that's stupid but that is the way the game is balanced. As far as Oblivion goes I have much more of a problem with the pcs skill system and development than I do with scaling. My only realy problem with scaling is that bandits have such high end weapons by later in the game. Not only is it contrary to the lore of the gameworld, but it really devalues the high-end weapons when they are falling from the sky. Other than that I find the scaling creates a challenging gameworld especially later where most crpgs get easy. The skill system though is totally hosed. And I don't like being forced to metagame just to survive.
