  1. I finished Dance of Dragons. Overall it was good but it does seem to bog down a little.

If it was any other writer I'd say there was no way they would catually kill Jon Snow off after devoting about 30% of the pages in four books to him but you never know. I guess we'll find out in 2016.

I'm calling it now: Jon gets resurrected by Melisandre and/or becomes Azor Ahai. GRRM did an interview about ADWD and he gets asked why he killed off Jon. From his response, I think we'll be seeing Jon pretty soon.

    Regarding Stannis...

From his response, I'm pretty certain that Ramsay's letter is a lie and Stannis and his army are alive. Since Theon can confirm that they have a fake Arya, perhaps they're marching on the Dreadfort instead?

I'm tearing through Guy Gavriel Kay's books. Finished Tigana and thought it was pretty good. I'm working through A Song For Arbonne and really enjoying it.

  2. No, Invisible War is a good game. It just didn't measure up to the original and had some questionable design decisions.

All right, I'll see if I can grab a copy after I finish DX1.

Erm Wombat , MechLemon is talking about the original Deus Ex in your second quote.

And yes Lexx, you have to be careful that the guards outside don't rush in and kill everyone. I believe you get scolded by Anna immediately if things go right and no one dies. Also i think you have to go back out the way you came in, through the secret passage.

    Maybe that's why.

So I met Juan Lebedev and decided to kill Anna. Using the GEP gun was so satisfying. Time to side with the NSF!

  3. Playing Deus Ex for the first time. So, I had originally planned to do a stealth/non-lethal playthrough for the first few missions. I didn't kill anybody. After completing that warehouse mission right before Paul leaves, Anna Navarre says that she appreciated my enthusiasm for the slaughter in Battery Park. UNATCO soldiers are praising me for supposedly killing the NSF terrorists. WHAT?! /rage

Now everyone thinks I'm a murderer. Despite this, I'm really enjoying it. For future reference, is Invisible War as bad as everyone says it is?

  4. Reading the comments to the article I feel like I'm taking a trip through a bizarro land where Mass Effect 2 had a good story and Obsidian has only written Neverwinter Nights 2 and Storm of Zehir.

The comments make me sad. Gamers in general prefer a more "epic" story over a personal/subdued narrative (e.g. FO3 fans arguing FO3 had a better story than FNV because of "epic" moments like Liberty Prime). It's the same reason why the Transformers movies are so financially successful.

  5. Ripten: One Hour With Skyrim Finally Made Me a True Believer (Hands On)

    Pretty funny and enthusiastic preview.

I'll opt out from commenting because I wasn't too impressed... though that may just be due to being tired from work and feel indifferent.

I think most people are impressed because 1) the faces actually look decent and 2) after Oblivion's inflated faces, anything's an improvement. :)

Looking at the pictures more closely...it looks like the people of Skyrim haven't heard of bathing, or at least, bathing regularly. They look like they haven't bathed in weeks/months/years.

  6. Still recommending Joe Abercrombie for anyone who wants modern fantasy.

    This.

I still haven't had a chance to read his latest book "The Heroes" although I've heard good things. His next book "Red Country" is going to be a fantasy/Western mashup set in the same universe. Can't wait to see how that turns out.

  7. Finished The Sarantine Mosaic by Guy Gavriel Kay. So good. I can't believe I hadn't heard of him until recently. Now off to City of Thieves by David Benioff. Really loving it so far. His portrayal of Leningrad during WW2 seems to be pretty accurate.

  8. Part 1 and Part 2

    Very good read.

Also, I'd have dropped one romance, at least. I hate them normally, and having 4 in one game, all of which I had to write, was a pain in the ass. I lobbied for killing the Scarlet romance (spoiler, though probably not a shock if you've played past the first mission) and successfully got a 5th romance kicked from the game, but the others remained like a taint.

So I assume Sis was the fifth romance option?

  9. wow, this might be the first game i ever touch the khajit and argonian races, those both look REALLY good.

Same here. Neogaf has a thread up with all the new screenshots. I need a screen of a Redguard nao! (I hope Beth makes them look visually distinct and not just dark-skinned humans.)

    EDIT:

Most badass Khajiit I've ever seen.

  10. Anyone else get a chance to watch the 40 minute Skyrim demonstration from QuakeCon? There's a video floating around that Zenimax is trying to take down but some people have the 720p version already. :)

I think it's the stuff from E3 again. From the video:

    -Game looks incredible in motion

    -MUCH better animations

-Combat looks improved but still seems a little clunky

    -UI is slick and consolized

    -Crowd is annoying

  11. Playing Morrowind GOTY unmodded as a Dunmer assassin.

I couldn't get into it my first time through (didn't make it past the starting town) but coming back to it now, I admit that I'm hooked. I'm heading towards Vivec and find myself far more enthralled in this game than Oblivion. I really hope Skyrim is more like the former and less like the latter.

  12. Isn't Sis in her teens?

They've actually said she could be anywhere up to 23.

News reports that she looks to be 16, but your dossier info puts her as possibly being safely older.

And besides, sequel = not necessarily 5 mins after the first game.

For all we know, she could become a playable character if a sequel shows up...

Ah, so we're safe then. :p

I would love to see her backstory expanded beyond the St. George legend we got in AP.

  13. As far as I could see, there are only dialog options and no other buttons anymore. Was that speech mini-game of any worth anyway? I never used it and I can't remember any situation where it would have been needed in some kind of way. For me it was just there for lulz and nothing more.

I didn't get very far in Oblivion, but I didn't notice a substantial difference in maxing disposition with other NPCs. Heh, it took me a while to "get the mini-game." I'm glad Beth ditched it.

Speaking of which, I hope Skyrim doesn't bring back the speech mini-game from Oblivion in any shape or form. Terrible design decision.

They confirmed it uses Fallout 3-style speech checks.

So it will be percent-based? I would prefer FNV's hard-cap skill checks but at least it's an improvement from Oblivion.

  14. Season 2 casting here and here.

Carice van Houten is Melisandre, Stephen Dillane is Stannis Baratheon, and Liam Cunningham is Davos.

The only actor of the three I'm familiar with is Stephen Dillane. He was fantastic as Thomas Jefferson in HBO's "John Adams." Really looking forward to seeing how he portrays Stannis.
