  1. agreed, musopticon2. plus, once the doors open to develop nuclear technology, it will ultimately become safer (which includes disposal), cheaper to develop, and cheaper to buy. the restrictions in place at the moment make it almost a losing proposition. taks
  2. nuclear _should_ start to see a resurgence, but that's a catch-22 for the environmentalist camp as they traditionally block such efforts. the fact of the matter is that nuclear is the cleanest, safest and most abundant source of cheap fuel on the planet. given the current media hype over GW, however, they do seem to be softening in this regard. we need it simply for when coal and oil run out because the other alternatives, wind, water, solar and, potentially fusion, are either not sufficient, or technologically so far out in the future they're not viable for our soon-to-be near-term needs. btw, i wonder how much energy can be generated from the methane that is released from landfills? normally they just burn it off. taks
  3. utilities are expensive in CO in general. no chance for using water power since, well, we're the source of many of the rivers in the S/SW to the southern part of the MW, which means our rivers aren't big enough to drive the turbines. they just connected our natural gas reservoirs to the western states, which increased demand, which increased prices for gas. grrr. off months are below $180 for everything, btw. taks
  4. our total bill is near $300 in peak months (june/july, december/january) but that includes gas and trash plus the myriad "fees" COS charges us for other things. they call 'em fees because we have a TABOR system in place, i.e., they aren't allowed to assess a tax without taxpayer approval. skirt the blockade by labeling them as fees. taks
  5. a better plan is to use energy efficient heating/cooling as well as other appliances (hot water heater is a biggie) and electronic gadgets. unfortunately, the _really_ efficient ones are rather expensive. my wife and i try to limit our AC use in the summer, and yesterday was in fact the first day we turned it on. the breeze that was going on yesterday was actually too warm to rely on open windows (CO Springs has a nearly constant breeze/wind, which allows us to simply open windows to cool the house, sometimes, however, it turns the house into a convection oven and yesterday was the first day this happened this year... last year we had it on in the beginning of may). taks
  6. yeah, one day's worth of the energy these things consume, which is pretty immense. but it's still only one day's worth, and only a fraction of the energy budget for the planet's population in the first place. taks
  7. nothing wrong with that, the problem lies in policies that limit CO2 production via other means, namely manufacturing goods. contrary to popular belief, gasoline is _not_ the primary contributor to man-made GHGs. plus, we'll run out of oil in the future, maybe 50 years, maybe 100, either way that's a non-issue. ultimately, limiting CO2 means limiting production which hinders economic growth. the trillions of dollars it will take to put changes in place can hardly be seen as a "win" if they're wrong. science is about getting it right, not outcomes. taks
  8. besides, trees aren't nearly the sink they often get made out to be. the suckers "exhale" CO2 at night. taks
  9. i've got the 320 MB eVga 8800GTS "superclocked" and it's sweet. i think intel's disadvantage with 64-bit may be due to poor support for 64-bit and not any inherent degradation over AMD. and E6600 smokes and is rather overclockable. plus, it is MUCH cooler running than any of AMD's chips. that may change with AMD's forthcoming update. the P5B Deluxe. i have a P5B-E and i cannot recommend it. too many issues and/or strange things with it. in particular, these idiots put the ONLY IDE connection on the other side of the monster video card, below the 6 SATA connectors. what were they thinking? SATA cables can route anywhere with ease, IDE cables are typically associated with CD/DVD drives, which means the top of the freaking case you dumb****ed *******&^, just out of reach of any standard IDE cable. sheesh. i've got one of those modular cable supplies and i must say, it is nice. however, i'd have preferred it if they also gave you some 1-1 or 1-2 cables since i have several one of a kind or two of a kind supply needs. as a result, i still have a mess of cables unconnected in my main chassis area. i could cut 'em all off, however. oh, and if you haven't heard, mammaries don't make much of a difference anymore as long as you don't go way low end or otherwise ham-string your bus (like using dual-channel mammaries in single-channel mode). taks
  10. no, i accidentally re-tarred an empty directory over a back-up tarball of some software i was working on. the guy that wrote the software is out of town, and i did not have access to any of his original files. 25 hours of work getting that one straightened out. i basically had to go through and figure out all of the stuff the other guy already figured out (like why the devices were not getting mapped properly), then add in a fix (sent from the vendor) to solve the problem i was originally working on. nobody actually heckled me, however, though we all agreed that i should get the SVN system up and running. hard to do with a bunch of contractors that work at home... taks
  11. didn't even notice this appeal to authority and didn't actually count the hyperbole in the first statement. taks
  12. oh boy, hyperbole and a slippery slope combined into a one-sentence, two-fallacy thought. btw, europe has already reached a problem with a negative replacement rate, the US is on the way (other than immigration) and once the large developing nations become developed, they will too. the world population won't grow nearly as fast as you indicate. taks
  13. if you pay well enough attention to all of his identities, you'll notice a hint of intent in that as well. taks
  14. i'm actually almost an original original. started posting in 1998 under the nom de plume of mendolf (my standard BG mage character). i avoided the yop boards at the time and stuck to posting about games, BG in particular, however. granted, this isn't the same board, but many of the same faces and certainly many of the same developers are involved. dark raven, i'm surprised you didn't list yourself, er, hades, visceris and sand as favorites. taks
  15. there's really only about 20 or so "regulars" anymore... well, maybe a few more, but i'm thinking along the lines of constant posters in the WoT threads. taks
  16. BS! I don't see you at any of the meetings. i'm perfectly happy being self-righteous about my beliefs by myself. uh, that said, there's meetings? sheesh, next thing you know it'll be a religion. taks
  17. 1. Is it possible to have serious, workable internet romances that doesn't lead to have gay sex with a boy pretending to be a girl? a1) man, i hope not. realistically, i do know some people that met on the net and are now married. not many, however. 2. Who wants to see a really ugly picture? a2) not me. 3. Why is it we internet geeks spend way too much time on asanine forums a3) your original comments said it all... boredom. actually, it's also an opportunity to vent about things that you normally wouldn't with flesh-and-bones companions. btw, my guess for you is bio, obsid, bethesda. you used to frequent the codex, but i'm assuming you tired of them as i did. 4. For more Dramatics: Who are your 3 favorite posters of all time anywhere, and why? a4) no answer forthcoming from me. i enjoy reading a variety of posters' comments for a variety of reasons. some in here share technical interests, some gaming interests, some are just fun to read. 5. Who are your 3 least favorite posters of all time anywhere, and why? a5) yrkoon, yrkoon and yrkoon. not sure which i like the least. taks
  18. i'm an atheist, which rules out right-wing for me, and last time i checked, i didn't think roshan was right-wing either... could be wrong, however. taks
  19. i'm touched. <sniff> i suppose we definitely keep each other entertained. taks
  20. no, it is not a contradiction. the very fact that you "know everything" belies an underlying method which was used to know that. that method then requires understanding (i.e., "how did you come to this conclusion"). it is almost a corollary to goedel's incompleteness theorem. as i stated, you cannot fully understand the entire box from within the box. the problem is exacerbated by the fact that "the box" is incomplete. i.e., incompleteness means "not fully describable." there are many known unprovable problems. it only takes ONE to falsify any theory that we can know all. taks
  21. which is an absolutely untrue statement. science is not a matter of belief. for example, you cannot prove nor disprove the existence of god. science is not capable of that because it is not based on "belief, and moreso with mathematics. nor can you prove many truths or untruths about "interesting" mathematical systems. this can be proven. that you don't exhibit the ability to understand speaks to your ignorance of a very basic tenet of science. read sand, read. taks
  22. No, you're spot on with your original line. At least according to what Gary Gygax have said in interviews. spider's correct. GG's original concept was a miniature war-gaming thing that evolved into D&D. everything i've read about what he (GG) likes about D&D revolves around dungeon crawling. old-skool modules, particularly those that GG wrote, are mostly centered around some sort of dungeon crawl. taks
  23. spoken like a true recipient of some mild heckling, hehe. going through the heckling process is also a learning opportunity. i'm expecting some from a boo-boo at work yesterday. taks
  24. i agree, sticks and stones and all that. why people always feel a need to get offended at every perceived slight is beyond me. why care what other people think or do if it does not directly affect you personally (insults certainly don't "affect" anyone)? taks
  25. the same can be said for some that think their lack of faith (in a higher power, or religion) is above all as well. taks
