The Conspiracy Against Alpha Protocol
qaz123 replied to Deus Ex Machina's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
Not out of the ordinary. I see most releases on sale for $39.99-$49.99 these days. Blur was just on sale for $39.99, too, and that's an Activision joint. Same with Split/Second, etc. New releases are on sale very early these days. I take advantage of these deals. Not to mention, I picked up Alpha Protocol for $44.99 from K-Mart when it released. I don't think it is a sale. I think it's an official price drop to $39.99 at least in NA. Either way, I'm definitely picking this up. Price Drop -

Well played sir. -
Gamespot have no idea how to Review a game
qaz123 replied to xebian's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
I don't understand why they wouldn't want to hype this game up a bit though. I thought Obs was respected to a degree in the gaming industry. -
Really thought IGN would give it at least a 7 while watching the review. I must admit, AP's AI doesn't seem anymore stupid than most games this gen. He complains of enemies rushing in, but they've did this in FO3 and ME too. ME2 had a decent cover system. So, I suppose one would expect a "spy" rpg to be more of a everyone takes cover and pops off some shots type of experience.

The Conspiracy Against Alpha Protocol
qaz123 replied to Deus Ex Machina's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
No conspiracy. AP deserves most of the reviews it is getting. However, some of them are way to harsh. I'd say its about on the level of DA:O (console version) except for length. I think most of the reviews are of the console version, and I'm sure (just like DA) the pc version is way better. -
He's not asking for artistic filters, he's asking for ART DIRECTION, you know varied environments with different color palettes etc; not some sepia filter. Its a lost cause bro. The people here will defend AP to the grave. This games art direction is generic at best, but try getting that point across here. I mean, just except the game for what it is. Right?
-
Oh, no doubt. I'm just saying that was awfully harsh even for him.
-
From Destructoid: 2/10 Ouch, that's pretty harsh.
-
This is truely... an awful game.

It'd be a more legitimate criticism if he could find something to complain about other than graphics and a minigame. Not sure why. He's not a reviewer, he just somebody posting on the games messageboard. He clearly doesn't like the game and after paying -
I know what i did mean and wasn't exactly what you understood. Do you mind explain what for you is poor presentation? First, the graphics. I understand that graphics don't make a game, but there is something about a 2010 game being released that looks like AP that rubs me wrong. I play retro games during downtimes between games I like. So, its not like I'm a graphics whore. Also, some of the animations look downright terrible and/or silly. (the crouch walk for example) Plus, I've heard there is no physics engine. RDR, which I'm currently playing, uses the euphoria and most games at least use havok. Overall, it seems AP lacks or poorly implements many features that we now expect in full priced games. Second, the combat. It doesn't seem like the real-time, tps elements and the number crunching flow well together. Ultimately, it looks neither like a good stealth game or a good tps. I understand this is an RPG first, stealth and shooter second, but the systems put in place look more like a pain than a joy to play. (manhole sized targeting reticules for example) Combat should be fun and rewarding whatever route they take: real-time, turn based, etc. The only place this game seems to shine is in actual conversation and choices. It's like Heavy Rain (maybe a bad example) with terrible combat inbetween. Finally, with RDR to finish and other games I still want to play, AP couldn't have come at a worse time. So it seems really hard to drop that $60 on AP. Which is a shame, because I really like Obs. They'll still get my dime for New Vegas and this game eventually, but I just don't feel this is a $60 product.

did you read the maybe word ? stop trying to be a genius ...the fact is that the majority of gamers that are bashing the AP ; are like you Bioware hard to die fans that are really blind idiots to appreciate other RPG that are not made by yours RPG's god.BTW, The quote function in the forum work great. Wow, so just because someone enjoy's one of BW's games they're a blind idiot that can't understand the greatness of AP? No, I think the majority of people bashing the game are gamers in general who don't understand the poor presentation. (graphics, AI, animations, lack of physics, pop-in, etc.)

I had DA:O on the PC, and it, too, was buggy as hell. There you go, the Joystiq guy didn't say the same of DA:O on PC... just shows how good the PR ($) is working... Yes.... when all else fails, blame BioWare and accuse them of bribery. DA:O was buggy (and boring) but by western RPG standards it was fairly well polished. The console versions were hammered fairly. AP is unpolished and buggy and I can see why it's getting a bad reception. The combat and AI is last gen, the visuals are bland and outdated, the story and writing and branching paths is as good as I expected but Thorton is a lame protagonist with some really poorly delivered lines, the plot twists are kinda predictable, hacking minigames every 3 minutes, the "stealth" in this Espionage RPG is a joke, the boss battles are absurd, very limited enemy variety, the game is short.. at first I thought this would be a disappointing mess, then when they started releasing more trailers and videos it looked like it might actually be great, and now I can say I agree with the scathing reviews.... this is easily Obsidian/BlackIsle's worst game. It just isn't very fun in the end and I feel so let down for actually changing my mind and preordering awhile ago. This game doesn't change my mind about New Vegas though, I'm sure that will be great. But yeah....AP is very, VERY disappointing. Just an opinion. Exactly, I don't understand why people here are making excuses for this game being recieved poorly. This game sounds awesome on paper, but in motion it easily looks like obs worst game. There's a good rpg in the mix of this mess, but I might wait for a price drop.

super wrong...your knowledge is really wrong. If you believe in reviewers you are really a sheep or a tool. Maybe he doesn't want to blow $60 on a game most people are saying is a flawed gem at best. He must be a real tool for trying to wisely spend his money. It may just be that some people want to wait for a price drop before buying a game, in which concept they like, is questionable.

I mean that they were looking for the wrong thing in Alpha Protocol. Maybe it's the over the shoulder camera or the modern setting, but with so many people playing it like a shooter, i can see how people can find it dissapointing. But people that knows what Obsidian's all about want something entirely different, which isn't mentioned in a lot of reviews. I mean, i don't think anyone here expects Uncharted-like action in AP. We want the great writing and characters and so far the reviews have concentrated their criticism in aspects that are somewhat minor to AP. The 1.0 user review doesn't even mention dialogue. The 5.0 user review is barely readeable and the 7.0 is just a few hours in. Those aren't either conclusive nor trustworthy reviews. And Gamestop is a number and a debatable quote. At the same time, there's about 3 foreign professional (though arguably) reviews giving it mid-high 80s. I don't see that much negativity. Kotaku, IGN, the real Gamespot review, 1Up, etc. don't have their reviews up yet and 3 user reviews is hardly quorum. I see what you're saying and agree to a point. Personally, I don't care about the review scores other than it hurts Obs. I guess we'll have to wait and see what the other sites have to say.
-
But that was expected. Unfortunately, not everyone 'gets' Alpha Protocol. Just like not everybody gets Deus Ex or Half Life. There's just been a lot of people not getting it. So far, everyone that was expecting an Obsidian RPG outta AP has expressed being pleased. I think a lot more people "get" AP then you think. You can't blame every negative review/impression on the person not "getting" it. There are many impressions on other forums where the player is disappointed. At best, it seems this is most likely a flawed gem type of game. - at the Deus Ex/Half-life comment
-
I don't think there's that much negativity. I mean, we all knew it'd come to wether the reviewer sees past the bugs (which is something longtime fans of the genre have always somewhat overlooked). Bethesda or Bioware are just more influencial. I don't know if they payed off reviewers, but i can't believe for the life of me the same reviewers couldn't find as many bugs in Fallout 3 or Mass Effect 2. What? There is a lot of negitivity and it is starting to turn people away from the game. Also, it is not just the bugs, the dated graphics and gameplay in general seems to be the focus of a lot of the complaints.

Well, FO has over a decade worth of fans. I loved the first, second, and the third. So, a lot of the hype is in the name. AP, while an awesome concept, is still a new IP in a sequel saturated industry.
-
Well, they gave Bloodlines a 7.7 (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/vtmb/index....ult%3Btitle%3B0) so it's pretty clear they don't know what makes RPG gamers tick. Yeah, it couldn't be that AP deserves such a score.
-
LOL if you let reviewers decide for you what game buy/avoid i feel pity for you. I don't necessarily let them decide but i find as many reviews as possible and make my own educated decision taking into account all of the bugs glitches and gameplay values. So you do what most normal people do? Don't sweat it, people here are overly sensitive about this game.

Maybe the delay was a good move after all
qaz123 replied to kreese12's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
All things being equal, it's about as good as random chance then. I don't watch television so maybe TV is being bombarded with RDR or Alan Wake content. It's unusual to get a game release that has absolutely nothing around it. And I'd rather AP go up against RDR than Modern Warfare 2. All I was saying is that it would be better if AP came out when very few notable releases are coming out.
