  1. No one in this thread has even attempted to justify piracy.
  2. Would you really be surprised if it did?
  3. The only place where piracy isn't overstated is probably the music industry. On a somewhat related topic: In my media studies, (TV specifically) I've come an interesting idea: "The imperative of increasing viewership leads to homogenization of the program offerings, while the race for exclusive content, which increases viewership ends with a paradox: all TV stations report on the same events in a similar manner... thus one of the main reasons for privatization of state electronic media ended up in a counter productive manner - instead of greater diversity in content under the influence of the market, a greater uniformity (was achieved) under the dominant formula of sensationalism and "tastelessness" that attracts the largest viewership. " Exchange viewership with "sales" and you get what's happening to games. This is a much greater problem than piracy, because its probably just a question of time before current streamlined concepts of gameplay wear out and sales start dipping. All the while companies are thinking only of piracy without even considering that there is a real flaw in having every game look like every other game.
  4. Funny thing once you start thinking about it, its not really stealing - its more akin sneaking into the cinema without paying for your ticket. Free riding essentially. Pirates after all do not sell the stuff they crack. The ones that do will be put out of business anyway, by the expansion of the internet (it already happened in these parts).
  5. How reassuring
  6. We'll run out of oil before any of this can get from the drawing board.
  7. Why does this topic always turn into an ethical thing. It doesn't matter whether piracy is good or not, or copyright infringment or whatever - its here to stay. Since its here to stay, what most of us here argue is that the industry should ditch the new DRM wankery because its doing absolutely nothing against pirates. Of course, if as someone suggested the target is the secondhand market... well then all the more reason to rail against new DRM, because reselling games is our moral right (no matter what its status under law). If I bought it, I can sell it - and they shouldn't prevent us from doing so.
  8. Alt tab out of the game and it will revert to windowed mode.
  9. I was thinking of picking this up but i decided against it. I've never played XCOM before, but looking at the graphics its just too much to swallow. I won't have the will to go through with it. So I just picked Freedom Force up instead. *puts dunce cap on*
  10. I fail to see the relevance.
  11. Actually there are only 23 countries that have official relations with Taiwan, most of them completely irrelevant in world affairs. The only reason they keep relations with Taiwan is probably to appease the US. Taiwan's position as a recognized independent state is far from secure, and China won't accept it nor is it obliged to. The US uses it in a game of balancing Chinese power, but in the long run it will, one way or the other be integrated into the Chinese state. It will either merge economically which the Chinese are working at diligently or it will be conquered, though in the end there may be no need for that.
  12. Me neither, they killed the desire in me after BS3, even though BS4 is supposedly better. Revolutions other games: Lure of the Temptress and Beneath a Steel Sky are available for free download off GoG. Machinarium draws heavily from BSS. Their adventure stealth hybrid, In Cold Blood is also available on GoG, though I heard it was meh.
  13. Broken Sword 2 was my first PC game, and was my favorite game of all time for years, until the disappointment that was BS3. Its a great game, a sorta GK lite.
  14. Its supposed to up the tempo and suspense. I like the first half better as well though. Hope you checked out both of the endings. My score was 332 out of 340-something.
  15. Finished GK, time for Myst: Masterpiece Edition.
  16. You beat me to it, I'm still on day 7. Notice how complex and realistic the characters are?
  17. Ugly as sin.
  18. Bugger this for warezbb. *kidding I don't see why some people here ignore obvious arguments against new forms of DRM, and insist on going with the flow, but whatever - that's human nature for you. I won't buy any game with the limited installs, online activation bla bla deal, unless its some dirt cheap thing on Steam. I'm not going to pay 50 euros, a fifth of the average salary here to be hassled and annoyed, for a game thats likely to last 3 days on my hard drive.
  19. Who mentioned giving anything away? A simple dic...disk check and a serial work well enough to prevent basic copying, and provide no hassle to the user. Why not stick to that? Online activations, various registrations and memberships, SecuROM etc. have all been busted by pirates, why insist on them when they don't work? Personally I'm even inclined to think that rival publishers play a part in cracking games, just to undermine the competition.
  20. How do they work for you? they increase your enjoyment of the game or what? A person not inclined to copy a game won't do so even if it has no protection at all. Someone who actually wants to copy the game will do so regardless of the protection that's on it.
  21. Wait, DRM works? How? 90% of the games dont even make it to the end of the first week uncracked. Something wrong right there. Plus these protection schemes cost money raising the end cost of the game. Yet they dont do squat except annoy people. I fail to see the logic. Piracy won't go away, and can't really be stopped. In the never ending crusade against it the only casualty is the poor sod who bought the game. That's really not a desirable outcome is it?
  22. I win Yeah I made a similar typo chatting with a girl on FB once. That was embarrasing.
  23. The only anti piracy measure that ever worked was Starforce 3 (but not even on all of the games protected by it). It was boycotted into oblivion by a clever pirate disinformation campaign. It took me half an hour to set my Steam Company of Heroes up. I had to register for... something... - it wouldn't let me play the game if I didn't. A major hassle since I'm not so dumb to forget that only a few years ago registration was completely optional. At most you had dickcheck and CDkey. That worked fine for years. No credible reason for changing it.
  24. you're welcome Olkaa hyv
  25. For some reason I thought he was long dead. (facepalm) The Catcher in the Rye is a great, timeless, book.
