  1. the axing of many of the higher lvl npcs, this was bad.

those npcs though were never to be in user end campaigns.

if the pcs fail game over man game over.

the number of gods they are combining.

the slaying of helm, and mystra.

this is just the bad and the tip of the iceberg too, well for me anyway

Well, the axing of many NPCs seems rather idiotic from my point of view, since I like having a living breathing world, where things are happening in the background even in the absence of the PCs.

I did find the huge number of deities in the Realms confusing and unnecessary, so their culling is a positive change for me, but perhaps they should have gone about it in another way, one that would be more believable and more palatable to the fans.

  2. At the very least it would likely serve to dilute the feel of the franchise. I suppose a couple of new enemy types would be feasible if they tie-in well into existing lore. For example, the dead unidentified extraterrestrial being that was found in the original Alien movie... that species could be introduced.

Well, sure....if they do it right? I never felt Aliens could (should) be exploited like Star Wars, which can endlessly be extended with new alien races....they better be careful about this in Aliens.

And that is really the question... can this be done effectively without diluting the feel of the Alien(s) franchise?

  3. And the graphics were criticised all around. The game plus the add-on got great reviews despite the engine, not because of it.

I did not realise that the graphics were maligned. Indeed, my computer at the time had huge problems running the game due to the fact that my notebook only had an integrated graphics card.

Apart from that, LucasArts is gunning for new inventions, see Force Unleashed and the new Indiana Jones game (DMM and euphoria). That kind of new stuff can't be used in combination with such an old engine.

That is true, but Force Unleashed promises to be more of an action-oriented game. I would expect KOTOR 3 to use a quasi-turn-based system like its predecessors.

  4. Why do you think you need a gazillion of enemy-types in a CRPG to succeed?

Because combat is a major component of CRPGs and people like to fight a variety of enemies.

Introducing new silly enemy-types in Star Trek/Wars fashion would be kinda disappointing.

They better stick with the standard zoo (with some humans and androids in between), but use it more creatively. Josh will handle this, you'll see! :ermm:

I hope you are right and they pull it off well.

  5. Alien(s) is one of my favorite franchises and makes for great movies, as well as computer games where one gets to play as the predatory creatures themselves. I am wondering, however, if the franchise is suitable for CRPGs.

Despite the words 'roleplaying' a large part of CRPGs consists of combat and for that to be interesting, there needs to be a wide variety of enemies to fight against. The Alien(s) franchise has essentially one kind of creature with several types as the main enemy. Sure, some humans might also serve as enemies, possibly along with some robots to spice things up, but that does not seem enough. The problem would be somewhat lessened if the predators were also inserted into the mix, as they have been in some movies and games. I suppose other sorts of extraterrestrial creatures could be introduced as well. This could solve the problem, but unless done with utmost care, it could also dilute the feel of the franchise.

  6. The only game that gives current cards trouble is Crysis. Unless you want to play all games at ridiculous resolutions of course.

I want to play at really high, not ridiculous settings! :sorcerer:

its only a couple months away, till the the gen cards come out. I do not have a 8series card so maybe i went out of line, but my 7series blows when it comes to LOW settings for unreal3 at resolution 800*600. So Ill save up for the uber 9series graphic card so I can kick boks ass in Unreal3. ;)

Bok my handle is still Enlight_2.0 if you want to play Unreal 2K4 Tourny!

Which card is that, exactly? My 7600GT works pretty well with UT3

    @Magister: SLI

    That explains it. Thanks!

  7. I don't know - I can investigate, but in the meantime, would you like to make the thread again? If it's as you describe, it's more likely to be a board glitch than anything else.

Sure, it was not a long post, so I can post it again easily. I did not do so, because I did not want to break any rules thinking that perhaps my thread may have been removed. If that's not the case, don't waste your time investigating it - it will take me about 2 minutes to simply create it again, so it's absolutely not worth it.

  8. I posted a thread here yesterday on the topic of whether Aliens is a suitable franchise for an RPG. The topic was not written in abrasive style and I even mentioned how much I liked the Aliens franchise, though I argued that it does not seem to provide a wide enough variety of enemies for a CRPG, although conceding that this could be rectified with some creativity at some risk of diluting the feel of the franchise though. In any case, I came back today and the thread is completely gone. Where has it disappeared?
