  1. I need a notebook PC for work and it is easier to justify paying something extra to make it decent and give it a graphics card than it is to justify buying a system dedicated to gaming, as well as a television set required to use it. The latter also take up much more space, look ugly in the living room and are destitute in the types of games that I tend to like. It is no competition...

  2. I'm speaking for myself here, but I really love working on D&D games - even after working on a bunch of multi-year D&D projects (IWD1 [plus IWD1: HoW and IWD1:Trials,] IWD2, BGDA, BGDA2, NWN2.) D&D is near and dear to many of us at Obsidian, and if the planets are in alignment, D&D games are always something we get very excited about working on, and our "master plan" definitely doesn't rule out doing more of them.

Of course there's an appeal to work on new, original, and different games too; fortunately we have multiple dev teams at Obsidian, and if Atari's interested in new D&D games and we have people available and can keep food on the table for our devs, we'll try to figure out how to do it.

I am glad to hear that! I love D&D too and Obsidian's electronic interpretation of it has proven to be excellent.

4th Edition looks pretty frickin' cool too....

After 4E comes out I will await patiently for Obsidian's translation of the new rules into electronic format. ;)

  3. Personally, I only game on the PC and do not own any consoles nor do I have any plans whatsoever to buy any of them.

If there's too option you can't actually prefer each one of them.

The option is there for those who prefer both equally: i.e. those who have no preference between the two.

Also, option "I don't game" on gaming forums is somewhat... interesting :(

It is there for completness sake! :(

  4. This is what my Google-fu is coming up with:
    1) Tyr kills Helm in a duel over the affections of Tymora thanks to Sune for reasons that aren't clear except they seem to indicate Cyric got them both to drink an enhanced version of a philtre of love...

    2) The Faerun setting is being set 10 years ahead of the 3e version and not the 100 years indicated at the start of The Orc King...

    3) Mystra is slain in her home plane of dweomerheart by Cyric and Shar, the result is that she is effectively destroyed permanently and the backlash of this kills countless spellcasters, renders others insane and has been called the Spellplague.

4)There is a side effect that results from this "Spell Plague" that causes Faerun to merge with something that was split from it by an elvish high sorcery and this will not only explain the presence of the Eladrin but also the increase in numbers of Tieflings although exactly how hasn't been said but there have been indications the Eladrin fled an invasion in their own home plain and that whatever did invade might have arrived in Faerun and caused this...

If The Orc King is revealing aspects of 4E, I might get it. I'm not a PnP gamer, but I do enjoy the drama of DnD's cosmology. Heck, I'm dying to know if they'll ever reveal where Deathstalkers get their powers from. Some suspect it is Cyric, others that it's Set, and some suspect it is indeed Bhaal.

I'm reading a bit about the clearer division between demons and devils. Devils are scheming and trying to obtain souls, demons are engines of neverending destruction. But... this is new? I thought that's how it had been.

Yes, apparently Forgotten Realms is getting a substantial remake.

  5. From playing Mask of the Betrayer I think it\s especially bad how the epic feats require stats of 25, which means you can only min max if you want some of the fun feats.

Every 3E CRPG I have ever played since Torment I have made a point of rolling my stats and entering them with cheat codes. Of course I end up with too many points to spend and I become overpowered, but it\s better than the very limited choices you get with point buy.

Well, I certainly see your point.

As for the proposed changes, I like complexity, I like lots and lots of choices at level up and character generation, but then it\s been over a decade since I have actually played pen and paper D&D on a regular basis, my experience of 3E has been almost entirely digital interpretations.

I am both a PnP RPG and CRPG D&D gamer and I like complexity in both.

On the whole, I am still ambivalent about the direction 4E is taking, as there is really not enough information available to make up my mind about the mechanics.

  6. without them taking an inordinate amount of space?

I think it would be possible for a program to record using a high-compression mode - whether it's practical is another story. For instance, such on-the-fly high-compression methods might not be able to keep up in terms of 'real-time data speed' - resulting in a jerky-motion, missed-frames, sucky end-result. Example, for many folk, turning on Fraps - a program that results in huge video files - to record whilst in-game, the FPS drops drastically because of the extra load. You'd probably need a really, really powerful computer to handle it.

So in short, my guess is that under most circumstances the answer would be "no."

Fair enough and thanks! Anyway, what is the best (free) program you would recommend for video capture in-game?

  7. 3E has point buy, which limits character creation to me. Too many min maxed characters.

In PnP I also prefer rolling to point buy both as a player and as a DM, but in CRPGs point buy is OK. In any case, given the design philosophy of WotC for 4E, I would guess that point buy is not just going to be an option in 4E, but it will likely be the default method of ability score generation.

  8. From my very own few-hour experience on these board I know the following thus far:

    0th Title: Nub (0+ posts)

    1st Title: Prestidigitator (5+ posts)

I have surveyed the boards for more information and this is what I came up with based on the postcounts of other members:

    2nd Title: Evoker (50+ posts)

    3rd Title: Conjurer (100+ posts)

    4th Title: Theurgist (200+ posts)

    5th Title: Thaumaturgist (400+ posts)

    6th Title: Magician (600+ posts)

    7th Title: Enchanter (800+ posts)

    8th Title: Warlock (1,000+ posts)

    9th Title: Sorcerer (1,200+ posts)

    10th Title: Necromancer (1,400+ posts)

    11th Title: Wizard (1,600+ posts)

    12th Title: Mage (1,800+ posts)

    Final Title: Arch-Mage (2,000+ posts)

Arch-Mage seems to be the final title (excluding Developers, Moderators, VIPs and perhaps Custom Titles).

  9. currently the Dev Indicator thing has not migrated well with the most recent forum upgrade. I do think admin wants to implement it again - hopefully it will happen!

The first time I saw the feature was on Bioware forums and I immediately loved it - it was very useful. I guess these forums are less busy, so it is not as necessary, but it would still be nice.

  10. As such, can we expect that Obsidian Entertainment will also follow the path that Bioware has tread and cease to create any D&D/Forgotten Realms games in the future? If so, that would be a very sad fate indeed for D&D CRPGs. o:)

It's all soccer-games from EA Bioware now buddy.. sorry. Suck it up.

That's a bit harsh. I don't think it automatically follows that EA will change the Bioware approach. In any case, Bioware started moving away from licensed properties long before it was bought out by EA.

  11. I'm sooooo tired of Forgotten Realms games. I think that's why I'm enjoying The Witcher so much, it's nice to have a departure from the standard D&D games.

I am not tired of them at all. o:) Indeed, I like them a lot Faerun is vast enough to provide a plethora of new gaming opportunities, while also having the advantage of deep lore and some degree of familiarity from previous games. As far as I am concerned, it's a perfect balance. There are many non-D&D/non-Forgotten Realms RPGs out there and some of them can provide 'a break' from the Realms, but I always enjoy coming back for more D&D/Forgotten Realms CRPG goodness when a good title is created in that category. It would be sad to see such games disappear from Obsidian's repertoire.

  12. So when WotC talks about using 2d10 instead of d20

Where did you hear/read that? I have been following 4E news closely, but I must have missed that.

and giving triple hit points to starting characters (including enemies)

This messes up multiclassing somewhat. It would probably be better to give two racial hit dice to each starting character, rather than triple hit points.

  13. I just want to add that I do hope that Obsidian Entertainment does not transition to its own IPs only and that it does continue to create new D&D/Forgotten Realms RPGs. Although I do not doubt that Obsidian is capable of creating its own quality IPs, I do love D&D/Forgotten Realms CRPGs and would hate to see them disappear from Obsidian's repertoire, particularly after Obsidian's stellar performance with the Mask of the Betrayer.

  14. I just remembered that the helpful icon indicating threads with developer posts, never made a comeback after it disappeared. Would it be possible to bring it back? It could be helpful in the Aliens forum, in particular.

This would indeed be an excellent feature.

  15. As for the NWN franchise, that franchise started at least ten years before Bioware made their game, and honestly, are you really saying NWN was better than NWN 2? NWN is the only Bioware game I've played that I've never finished because it was just so bland and uninteresting.

I agree completely. I loved the Baldur's Gate series, but I too have never finished NWN 1, even though I bought the Platinum Edition of the game. Heck, I did not even finish the first campaign...

NWN 2 was/is vastly superior to NWN 1, and the Mask of the Betrayer simply blew me away - it is an outright excellent game and one of the best CRPGs I have ever played.
