Hurlshort Posted June 16, 2016 Posted June 16, 2016 We have had a few good debates about Mexico and their war on the cartels. I found this article to be uplifting. http://www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/2016/06/juarez-mexico-border-city-drug-cartels-murder-revival/ 1
Guard Dog Posted June 16, 2016 Posted June 16, 2016 Well, I for one think it is due in large part to the public wi-fi availability, particularly in Hermsasillo at Universidad de Sonora, and in Durango, Nuevo Laredo, & Satillo. Those systems were well designed and flawlessly installed and under budget I might add. Wrath of Dagon Posted June 16, 2016 Posted June 16, 2016 The article only talks about Juarez, not all of Mexico. Even so: "Still, the transformation seems credible, though some say it is also the result of an accord between the Sinaloa and Juárez drug cartels." "Two months after our conversation Leyzaola was shot multiple times while parked on a Juárez street, a reminder of how dangerous the city remains." "Much of what weakened Juárez remains: low-paying, dead-end jobs; street gangs and drug cartels; more billboards than trees; and proximity to a neighbor with an insatiable appetite for drugs and few controls on guns. What’s more, politicians haven’t touched the political system’s corruption and lack of accountability, which allowed small-time drug traffickers to become national security threats." Guard Dog Posted June 16, 2016 Posted June 16, 2016 Well to be honest in all the cities I worked in the only one I felt ill at ease in was Nuevo Laredo. We actually had police escorting us everywhere. "While it is true you learn with age, the down side is what you often learn is what a damn fool you were before" Thomas Sowell

Hurlshort Posted June 16, 2016 Author Posted June 16, 2016 Always a ray of sunshine, WoD. http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/stress-management/in-depth/positive-thinking/art-20043950 Just try to look at things objectively, that's all. Do you really believe that? You took this quote: Two months after our conversation Leyzaola was shot multiple times while parked on a Juárez street, a reminder of how dangerous the city remains. But cut out the rest of the paragraph: Two months after our conversation Leyzaola was shot multiple times while parked on a Juárez street, a reminder of how dangerous the city remains. He is now paralyzed and uses a wheelchair but has moved back to Tijuana and is running for mayor. As evidence of how much has changed in the city he left behind, the police quickly caught and charged two alleged attackers. Their trials will be open to the public and reported by the media. And if convicted, they’ll spend years in prisons run by guards, not inmates. It's ok to be a pessimist, I'm not trying to change your nature. But you should be aware that you are not being objective. I'm clearly not being objective, I am focusing on the positives here. You are focusing on the negatives. Again, that is totally your right, but don't try and sell it as something else.
Wrath of Dagon Posted June 16, 2016 Posted June 16, 2016 So when someone is shot and paralyzed for life the bigger picture is that attackers got caught? Pretty low standard I'd say. "Moral indignation is a standard strategy for endowing the idiot with dignity." Marshall McLuhan

And yet, he hasn't let that stop him from his commitment to deal with crime in Mexico. In interviews he claims that he has a newfound empathy for the victims of crime and has taken his message to Tijuana, another city in desperate need of reform.
