ramza Posted May 13, 2004 Posted May 13, 2004 Just go check all the great things we have this year at E3!!! So many games: Metal Gear Solid3, Silent Hill4, Resident Evil4, Devil May Cry3, Dragon Age, Kotor2, World of Warcraft... Wow! However, most of them are sequels: what's going on? Developers seems to lack a bit of imagination... There are other weird games on the other hand: a playboy (?) game and another one with the Larry guy (a well-known pervert)... Has any of you played any of the old Larry games? I think there were 7 or 8 of them and many of my classmates used to play them at sixth grade... "Ooo, squirrels, Boo! I know I saw them! Quick, throw nuts!" -Minsc "I am a well-known racist in the Realms! Elves? Dwarves? Ha! Kill'em all! Humans rule! -Me Volourn will never grow up, he's like the Black Peter Pan, here to tell you that it might be great to always be a child, but everybody around is gonna hate it.
Arkan Posted May 13, 2004 Posted May 13, 2004 Seems like Bioware is the only dev doing something original...two original titles, in fact. "Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger." - Herman Goering at the Nuremberg trials "I have also been slowly coming to the realisation that knowledge and happiness are not necessarily coincident, and quite often mutually exclusive" - meta
Vendetta Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 Originality doesn't just come from the setting, after all the setting is just a set of clothes the mechaincs of a game wears. Jade Empire isn't original because it has a new creator built world, but because it has a depth and breadth of combat that isn't seen in RPGs. It's more than just having an attack action, you have hundreds, and they're all different. Other than that, there are other games that are original and new, some of which are going to change all the rules. Take DoA:Ultimate. It's just DoA2 rendered with the DoA:X engine right? All the same characters and moves, right? But no, it's the first of its kind, it's a beat em up that ensures you always have a human opponent. There go your piffling excuses about not having been able to practise, there's always a fight out there. There's a hell of a lot of brand new stuff at E3 to be excited about, whether it's a new world, like JE or Fable; an old favourite turned all the way up to 11, like HL2, Halo 2, Zelda, and Doom 3; or something that makes so much sense as an online form, that you can just jump into for ten minutes and lose an hour playng, like DoA:Ultimate or XBox Arcade.
Opus131 Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 Seems like Bioware is the only dev doing something original...two original titles, in fact. Well, there's F.E.A.R., and then Guild War. I'm sure there must be a few more original titles nestled there. Frankly, i hate sequels, but what can you do, when F.E.A.R. was first announced some people raised an uproar about the fact it wasn't neither NOLF3, Blood3 or Shogo 2, go figure... Opus131
