How do I keep it? It's looted as Quest item and there doesn't seem to be an option for refusing to hand it over to Orsic. I must be missing something.

You can keep it if you kill Penhelm without talking to him after you exit Dunryd Row. Just attack him without letting the dialogue to kick in.

After that tell Osric you had to kill some people to get the armor and he will get mad and you can keep it.

In other words, it's not meant to be looted? :D

No, your just supposed to get it in a civil way

I tried to pump my RES to 18 before talking to Osric and I didn't get a dialog option to tell him I had to fight for the armor (in fact, there were no unqualified interactions shown; what I saw were all the dialog options there were.)

Could you post the exact same dialog sequence you used to get the armor?

Osric will only give it to the player out of disgust for their actions.

RES is not needed here. Just kill Penhelm(but do not talk to him!) and loot the armor when leaving Dunryd Row and then return to Osric and select the option "I may have had to kill a few people". He gets a bit mad and lets you keep it.

Ah, I see now. I've always talked to Penhelm before fighting; next time I'll attack first, ask questions later ;)

Is it actually any good, or does one just get it for the evulz?

If I'm typing in red, it means I'm being sarcastic. But not this time.

Dark green, on the other hand, is for jokes and irony in general.

It's Exceptional and has Second Chance, IIRC. Also looks bad ass ;)

Not bad, then. Does Second Chance stack with Unbroken or whatever the Fighter ability is called these days? I know it didn't used to.

If you kill Penhelm in this way and Osric lets you keep the armor out of disgust, does the Dozen's merchant still become available?

No matter which fork in the road you take I am certain adventure awaits.

I think so. You can progress the Dozens quest line so I imagine the merchant would work too.
