I don't see why everyone is surprised. The idea is thrown around several times in the books (Henry Wu laments that Hammond didn't let him make "better" dinosaurs) - in fact, the first novel confirms only a few animals had frog DNA, other gaps were filled using other types of DNA. There's even a Carnotaur in the Lost World that can change color similarily to cuttlefish. This has always been in the franchise.

Yeah, Jurassic Park only became about dinosaurs in the movies.

 

The books just used dinosaurs as a plot device.
