Aoyagi Posted February 10, 2014 Author Posted February 10, 2014 Now if you'll excuse me, I'll head off to do some IWD playing. 1
Nonek Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 Fascinating videos, thank you for uploading Mr Aoyagi. I very much enjoyed the ramble on sympathetic antagonists and have enjoyed when they are presented as Mr Sawyer describes, it seems far more reasonable for my characters. I don't think that Mr Sawyer or anybody else on the Black Isle team has anything to regret in Icewind Dale 2, there were low points such as too long slogging through the Underdark and high points such as the siege of Targos and the return to Kuldahar, but all in all I found the game to be enjoyable and challenging. In fact i'd still like to see that IP brought back to life, though with perhaps a little more narrative focus. For ten months the team worked a small miracle in my opinion. 1 Quite an experience to live in misery isn't it? That's what it is to be married with children.I've seen things you people can't even imagine. Pearly Kings glittering on the Elephant and Castle, Morris Men dancing 'til the last light of midsummer. I watched Druid fires burning in the ruins of Stonehenge, and Yorkshiremen gurning for prizes. All these things will be lost in time, like alopecia on a skinhead. Time for tiffin. Tea for the teapot!
aluminiumtrioxid Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 (edited) I don't think that Mr Sawyer or anybody else on the Black Isle team has anything to regret in Icewind Dale 2 Considering the time constraints they had to work with, I agree. It's still a horrible game, though. Edited February 10, 2014 by aluminiumtrioxid "Lulz is not the highest aspiration of art and mankind, no matter what the Encyclopedia Dramatica says."
Nonek Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 Personally I wouldn't say horrible but flawed, as many games are, but I respect your opinion and can see why you hold it. I always felt that the game should have been set in Kuldahar from the beginning, with the hints and background all about and slowly being revealed and making sense, set to the backdrop of the Legion of the Chimera besieging the Druid enclave. I have to admit when I heard Underdark in the game I rolled my eyes, sighed and muttered something obscene. I'm a little burned out on the place. Quite an experience to live in misery isn't it? kirottu Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 (edited) I have this vague recollection from Black Isle forums that JE had said he wont be buying Icewind Dale II and I took it as a sign he hadn't enjoyed working with Icewind Dale II, but I guess I was wrong. Edited February 10, 2014 by kirottu This post is not to be enjoyed, discussed, or referenced on company time.
Labadal Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 It's always great to get these videos because so much more can be said in them than in a single forum post. Kudos to Josh for taking his time.

I really enjoyed the Targos parts, but after that, the game just fell apart. Insanely hard combat encounter after insanely hard combat encounter (the fact that I found druids to be more useful than clerics in IWD1, and created my party accordingly, didn't help), and the worst thing about it was that when I dialed down the difficulty, it wasn't accomplished by weakening them rules-independently, but by giving me underleveled opponents fewer in number, causing me to also end up weaker in turn, and we were back to square one. Sargallath Abraxium Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 (edited) ...wow, Josh, ya got old, lad...from Teeny Goat ta Graybush in only 15 years or so... ...yeah, I know, I's older... ~ tosses RETURNING FROST DART from IWD II ~ ...WHO LUVS YA, BABY!!... Edited February 11, 2014 by Sargallath Abraxium A long, long time ago, but I can still remember, How the Trolling used to make me smile. And I knew if I had my chance, I could egg on a few Trolls to "dance", And maybe we'd be happy for a while. But then Krackhead left and so did Klown; Volo and Turnip were banned, Mystake got run out o' town. Bad news on the Front Page, BIOweenia said goodbye in a heated rage. I can't remember if I cried When I heard that TORN was recently fried, But sadness touched me deep inside, The day...Black Isle died. For tarna, Visc, an' the rest o' the ol' Islanders that fell along the way
Gorth Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 Still, not the most impressive Obsidian beard seen though “He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. Aoyagi Posted February 11, 2014 Author Posted February 11, 2014 Fascinating videos, thank you for uploading Mr Aoyagi. Erh, I don't want to take credit that's not mine, I'm merely sharing that Josh has uploaded new videos after quite some time. 1
Jarmo Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 (edited) Personally, IWD1 was my first IE game and I found it to be unfairly difficult all the time, almost unenjoyable. IWD2 followed right after (got both in the same dual pack) and didn't find that to be nearly as hard. (In retrospect, it was way harder but I just knew the system already). Anyway, of all IE games, IWD2 was the one I most enjoyed playing. Edited February 11, 2014 by Jarmo

I think I meant linking, i'm not sure though as i'm not au-fait with modern terminology, I still have no idea what zomg means. Quite an experience to live in misery isn't it? Zeckul Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 In 10 months it's very impressive that they managed to get 3rd edition rules in there, plus a significant re-work of the inventory system. I so miss quick weapon configurations and 50% more space in every other IE game. Spell icons were completely redone and very beautiful, with a clear color code system which made spells much easier to find. On the negative side, dropping OpenGL acceleration is an inexplicable mistake; music wasn't nearly as good as in IWD1; the story was disjointed and drawn out.
