Obsidian was working on Prey 2 at one point

What's more, they're reporting details that weren't sent to us by the original tipster, like the fact that the developers at the California-based Obsidian (South Park: The Stick of Truth) were working on Prey 2 at one point, and that the England-based studio Rebellion (Rogue Warrior) turned down the opportunity to make the troubled sci-fi shooter. Both Obsidian and Rebellion have worked with Bethesda in the past.

What?

The only way it makes any sense to me is if they just had a team doing "parts of the game" rather than working on it full-time under their creative direction. Alternatively, it could have been retooled as a System Shock 2-like, more RPG-y title under their direction (before it ultimately fell through).

That's, of course, assuming the rumor is true, though it has to be said that Kotaku recently had a pretty decent track record with this stuff.

Possibly. IIRC Prey 2 was going to be an open world game, though. So that kind of rpg would also have fit. Considering New Vegas as well.

I can't say I'm sad about them not working on Prey 2 specifically. I'm just sad in general that another project they worked on got canned. Of course, I don't even know if the rumor is true or not. Arkane are good develpoers and can probably come up with a good concept.

I'm actually surprised that this even was in development at Obsidian. And no idea when this fits in.

Between march and the kickstarter, possibly? Or was it the project that got cancelled in march. Or?.....

@Arkane I agree they are good developers. I'm not so sure they should go for System Shock though. Also I'm sad they scrapped Human Head's old concept.

Would be cool if Obsidian could make Dishonored 2 instead.

obsidian and arkane (the french part of it) working together on one game

that would be like the best thing since the invention of the toothbrush

the gameplay of dark messiah together with a story and characters like in mask of the betrayer or alpha protocol

after this game is released the nuclear war can start, because humankind would have created the best piece of art it can possibly dream to create

for the record: dark messiah does have a very well written story too, but not obsidian like well written

"When somebody offers you something as an independent studio, you take it. You take it, because it's feast or famine. That's what we've found." by Feargus.  Also, from TV Tropes Org,

One thing to note about Obsidian is their business model. Obsidian is hired by publishers for fixed amounts of money, rather than being an internal studio or making a game then looking for a publisher to publish it. This results in Obsidian not bearing the financial cost or gain of the failure/success of any game they make beyond reputation or future deals. This mercenary model is responsible for their buggy reputation, as the release schedule or budget is not as negotiable once the deal is made.

Were I a publisher exec (and I'd be a terrible one), I would look at Obsidian track record and see that they've only worked on one open-world game, on existing technology that they only altered minimally, and that their expertise lies in RPGs. If I were a particularly savvy exec I'd also notice that New Vegas was praised for the elements Obsidian is usually renown for and NOT for significantly improved open-world systems.

Ultimately though, who knows.

P.S. This doesn't look like a game developed by Obsidian. It's all about agile movement and shooting gameplay in an open arena (I'm not sure if it was supposed to be fully open-world).

****. I would have loved to see an Obsidian-made Prey 2 (which is a game I've been interested in since hearing about it a long time ago). **** again.
