Xaositect Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 We're hitting all these bonus tiers that add new areas and races and stuff, which is great! But, I'm also interested in adding depth and replay diversity to already-planned regions & companions. I understand this is a little harder to quantify as a Kickstarter goal ("uh, we'll increase the dialogue tree complexity by 20%!"), but that's the game I'm most interested in. Instead of (for example) having eight companions with eight pages of backstory, hitting a tier and adding a ninth companion, I want to add a page of backstory to the eight already there. Don't get me wrong, I love me some good exploration, but I'm more interested in finding out something interesting about a character I care about than finding another generic cave. Different kind of exploration, I guess. Some Torment nostalgia: (skip if you haven't beaten it) My first playthrough, during the final battle, I was presented with the option of resurrecting one of my companions. After a moment's thought, I selected Annah. That was when I realized how powerful a computer game story could be. I knew I was about to fight the "game boss" as it were, I didn't know how hard the fight would be, but I knew what I was fighting for was essentially my character's death. In other words, the one companion I resurrected was probably going to be the only one with a chance of walking away afterwards, and if I had to choose, I wanted it to be Annah. In other words, I didn't choose the character who could best help me beat the game, I chose the character I most wanted to be alive after the game ended. I can't recall having that reaction in any game before or since, but if anyone has a chance it's Obsidian, so I want to encourage that chance. 1
Volourn Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 Did you really use spoiler tags for a 15 year old game that most posting here have some experience with? L0L Anyways, the point of the diffwerent tiers is to add depth to the game. When they add a new companion they're adding all their dialogue chocies. You don't really need a tier specifically to add more depth the way you suggest since that likely occurs when they implement the quest in the first place. DWARVES IN PROJECT ETERNITY = VOLOURN HAS PLEDGED $250.

The Shadowrun kickstarter had a poll where backers were asked whether they wanted another city, or an expanded main city. Although it was eventually decided to add a new city (I think Berlin), there were a significant number of people (30%?) who just wanted more depth to the main city, so I think this is a perfectly valid point he's trying to make.
Majek Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 But why ask for more depth from OE? They give enough attention to setting, characters,... from the get go. 1.13 killed off Ja2.
Gyges Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 Yup, hopefully this is either redundant since they will add this kind of depth to any new content they will introduce anyway, or i really hope someone from dev is seeing this thread.

I guess the discussion becomes, how do you define 'enough' ? There are degrees of depth in characterization from a game like Planescape and something like Icewind Dale.

No, that's exactly what I'm referring to as breadth. Yes, of course they have to add content when they add a companion. What I'm saying is that I'd probably rather have 3 companions with 50 pages (for lack of a better unit of measure) of dialogue and character, than 150 companions with 1 page of character. And yes, probably not necessary, but it didn't seem impossible that people who had played other Infinity Engine games but not Torment are on this forum, and I really hate spoilers.

I just downloaded PS:T from GOG.
