Humodour Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 This is a delightful little game. $5 on Steam. Rogue-like, skill and stat-based, turn-based, 2D-isometric, funny dialogue and descriptions, procedural generation. Somebody might find these useful if they are playing it: http://dungeonsofdredmor.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Skills http://dungeonsofdredmor.wikia.com/wiki/Attributes
Tigranes Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 Anybody tried it? I've been aware of it for a few weeks but still on the fence. The idea of the graphical roguelike is cool and the character development seems awesome, but I'm not convinced on (a) writing, which seems distinctly un-funny, (b) claims that enemy AI is disabled at the moment, © it looks awful, though of course, it's a roguelike, so... Probably end up getting it soonish, it is $5. Perhaps once it's somewhere else I don't have to patronage Steam. pmp10 Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 Anybody tried it? Yes, it's ok, some charm but nothing special overall - still it seems to be worth the 5$. It may be a little different from a regular rogue-like with it's heavy learn-by-trying focus and somewhat unclear combat.
Humodour Posted July 22, 2011 Author Posted July 22, 2011 I am really enjoying it so far. Well worth $5. The character creation is great but there's little documentation. I recommend the two wiki links above for clarity. I actually found the dialogue and writing to be pretty humourous! Reminds me of a card game called Munchkin.
greylord Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 Looking at it, it looks like someone stole an old game and did their own version. Graphically and namewise it looks to resemble it. Dungeons of Dread on the macintosh from the early 90s. great game. Was the Diablo before Diablo. 40 dungeon levels to go down, and then you have to make it to the surface again. It's added some modern things to it, but in some ways, it feels like it could be an idea taken from that old game from nigh 20 years ago.
Humodour Posted July 22, 2011 Author Posted July 22, 2011 What makes DoD unique is its character creation. Like, this is the kind of thing Icewind Dale could learn a thing or two from. A very balanced, very varied, very fun character build system.
Tale Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 I'm wary. As a general rule I absolutely abhore dungeon crawlers. But I somehow enjoyed Torchlight. Is this game likely to be another exception? "Show me a man who "plays fair" and I'll show you a very talented cheater."
pmp10 Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 Depends on what you liked in Torchlight. The presentation in game is interesting and really helps to sell the concept but it still is a rouge-like. I'm at over 20 attempts and never even managed to reach the fifth level.
Humodour Posted July 23, 2011 Author Posted July 23, 2011 http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/07/19...ons-of-dredmor/ Good analysis. I'm pretty hooked, and I don't normally like rogue-likes.
