Fallout Online

Just noticed that there's no topic on it yet here, so starting it.

Interplay has recently launched the official Fallout Online website that allows you to register for beta.

No idea what the legal situation is now, but the lack of Bethesda reaction to it looks pretty interesting. They did not close the FOOL threads in the Beth forum (despite Bethesda's harsh moderation policies), they did not pull the FOOL news from Planet Fallout (even though we know they'd be able to do so if they wanted to).

Or maybe Beth is just too busy at E3? Wonder if we'll see any reaction from them after E3 is over.

And announcing it as Fallout Online without a settlement with Beth sounds too risky even for Herve. Or maybe I'm just overestimating him. Or underestimating him. Or both. After all, the preliminary injunction was denied in part exactly because they were not officially using the Fallout Online trademark.

You can find out more about Fallout Online at The Vault, of course. :p

Ah, Defonten's on this project? I enjoyed his artworks as a Fallout fan, before. :luck:

Herve Caen is scum and these slow 'interactive' websites don't impress me, but we'll see how this goes...

I don't think I could ever stoop low enough to buy such a game, regardless of how good it was (it won't be - good that is).
Okay, I hope you're being facetious, but on the off chance you aren't, can you explain this to me? Are you afraid of losing street cred if suddenly you discover you're finding FOOL enjoyable? Or is it just Directive #4 of Old Skool CRPGers (No MMOs Evar) overriding your system?

Not trolling, btw. I sincerely don't understand where you're coming from.

edit: ah, this is because it's Herve's creation, right? I'm kinda slow atm.

Yup, you can see his FOOL work here:

Yeah, Herve is a scum, but they do have Chris Taylor and Mark O'Green leading the project.

FOOL? Really? Was FOO too short?

FOOL is funnier, and has been the nickname of Fallout Online for years now.

Well, published by Herve, but designed by some of the original Fallout designers.

I don't dispute that the likes of C Taylor are probably working very hard and with the right mind set to make a proper fun Fallout game. I just don't like MMOs, and we've already seen how Herve Caen can turn gold into crap (or put gold in a crapper).

Anyway, name's on that beta sub list, just in case miracles really do happen.

Bingo. It's a 6 year old personal grudge shared by many of this forum's members.

Not saying that the game as a whole would be great, but at the very least we might see some cool additions to the Fallout world from Chris Taylor and Mark O'Green.

Chris Taylor worked on Fallout Tactics too, didn't he?

I never played the game, so I don't know if it was any good, but just to say that there will probably be bitching that the additions are un-Fallouty.

On Tactics, he wasn't really directly involved in the development. He was responsible for early plot outline, changes to SPECIAL (which were great imho) and general oversight over the game on Interplay's part, but some of his feedback (like complaints about the art style not being retro enough) was actually ignored as there was no time to change stuff. He wasn't the lead designer like with FOOL. And Mark O'Green is the guy who wrote all talking head dialogues in FO1 and 2.

Also, while Jason Anderson left for inXile, he did influence the game's design in earlier stages of the game, and probably much of the story and setting is still his.

Anyway, Taylor, similarly to Sawyer, is more of a systems designer (responsible for much of the SPECIAL system), while O'Green (responsible for most of the talking head dialogues in Fallout 1 and 2), similarly to Avellone, is more of a writer. And I'd say that in terms of the extension of the SPECIAL system, FOT was actually pretty good.

Driving was put in, but there were other changes?

Or do you mean the real time combat?

You mean he's secretly a super villain with a problematic relationship with his son?
That would make him interesting at least.
