Until they follow suit. Course that'll never happen.

Or will it.

I really don't see how his monopoly on the mass media can be anything other than a threat to true democracy. Newscorp should be broken up.

I agree Walsh (although they should rather realize that it'll only hurt their buisness in the long run), a very important concept of modern democracy is "free" information (of course paid of by other means as nothing is free).

While it is true that with advancing years, even the sharpest intellect dulls somewhat, Mr. Murdoch should never be underestimated.

Rupert is aware that one of the biggest obstacles to his cunning plan is the BBC. This is why he despises the BBC: because they have entered the web and do what they have always done, which is to provide a highly respected international news service, free to the user, paid for by the UK television licence fee, with a bit of loose money on the side. The major benefit, of course, is its value as a propaganda instrument of the British government.

His newspapers have recently ditched the Labour party, with the prior knowledge that they are now unelectable (and deservedly so). Rupert's sudden swing back to the arms of his previous lover, the Tory party, further ensures their victory. Coincident with this, the Tories announce that when they are elected, they will launch a fundamental review of the BBC charter and the role of the organisation.

So when they are elected, the Tories will break the funding link to the BBC internet services, but continue to ban advertising, thus obliging the BBC to either charge for, or abandon, their web-based services. All of a sudden, Mr. Murdoch won't seem like the man of yesteryear any more....

I found this comment interesting.. could there any truth to that?

I'm not going to comment on Murdoch, but I will say that this is going to fail. The Wall Street Journal (which Murdoch acquired a year or two ago) gets away with charging for online content because the paper is so highly esteemed in business circles, so lots of companies will pay the fee to get its employees access to its content, and anyone who is looking to make their career in banking/finance/etc., pretty much needs to read it over every day. His other ventures, though, are much less distinguishable from their rivals that still offering free online content. People will just delete the sites from their bookmarks and go elsewhere.

I do think that Cameron should be forced to state publicly that there willl be no change to the BBC charter. If enough of us write in about it then it can be tackled.

I'm not saying that the BBc is a holy writ, but if it annoys Rupert Murdoch then it can't be all bad, and it is certainly unique.

In Denmark, we have a newspaper called "Information." It has gotten what web 2.0 or 3.0 is all about. Many articles from this newspaper is free for all to read; all articles will be free 2-4 days after they've been in the newspaper. And people can comment on what's been in the newspaper. Often these comments are more worth reading than the article itself.

Very nice it is, I find :)

:) I was amazed by your comment. In the UK those comment sections are filled with the most insane verbiage ever concocted by man. e.g.

Well, it seems Murdoch has finally thrust the stake through his own heart. About time.
