Be generous! If you don't pay at least $5 I will beat you with a stick.

It ends on the 25th of this month (4 days).

I bought the Linux version for $30 because it's a good game and I'm glad to see them supporting Linux.

Edit: Here's some data on how this sale has worked for them so far.

That's a brave concept and it goes to show how succesful they've been.. I hope this turns out to be a profitable way of selling games, it could be interesting if it became a more common practice.

The problem is that it's hard to tell how much you want to pay for the game until you've played it, so people will err on the side of caution and pay a low price.

Of course, it has a demo, so that's a good solution to the problem.

So, from the sales data it seems 30% of the buyers chose to pay 1 cent.

They should've put a minimum price of $1 on it. Still, I'm betting that even considering that 30% of people, they're still making lots of money (and sales they otherwise never would have gotten) of this promotion.

I imagine people would be a lot more free with positive word of mouth praise if they paid for it this way, too.

Well looks like people are paying a lot less in general than what the game is worth.. a shame, but that was certainly a likely outcome.. Too bad that this will probably kill off some of the interest in selling games this way. We consumers don't really know how to act in a way that's beneficial in the long run, do we?

This kind of thing is bothersome, I mean try making more money and one wouldn't have to act that way. A person can't afford a time sink probably cant afford the time... blah blah blah. /rant

When Goo first became avaialable on steam I paid full price for it, and I feel like I got my money's worth. Still play it now and again.

I took this job because I thought you were just a legend. Just a story. A story to scare little kids. But you're the real deal. The demon who dares to challenge God.

So what the hell do you want? Don't seem to me like you're out to make this stinkin' world a better place. Why you gotta kill all my men? Why you gotta kill me?

Nothing personal. It's just revenge.

I'm sorry but how is it wrong to pay 1 cent for a game that's being offered for pay what you want? I wouldn't have bought it for full price, nor for 5 bucks for that matter. I played it, enjoyed it but it's really not my type of game. I'd say the game is worth exactly 1 cent to me.

Also they made over $100k with this experiment so I'd say it was definitely worth it.

I don't think anyone has anything against it..

I just hoped people would generally pay more (like 5$), as that would maybe validate this distrubution for the future.

Frankly, they should've put a $1 limit on it or such to stop silly buggers doing that. Unless they were really going for some sort of scientific experiment or something.

So this distribution method can certainly be saved, Rosbjerg, with that in mind.

I could imagine that if you introduced a limit, people would pay less overall.. As a reaction if you will, to an arbitrary limit. I think that would actually backfire, but that's an assumption, I have nothing to base it on.

Make it a hidden limit that you were only alerted to if you tried to go below it, perhaps.

That would be cheating. Then it would be pay anything over a dollar.

Paying 1 cent seems like a hassle. When NIN released their album with the same "pay as much as you want" method, they had the option to not pay anything and like 70% of people did that, but they wouldn't have bought it anyway, so no real loss.

Well for the one cent crowd after transaction costs they have payed some 20ish cents to give you the game.

I guess on the low end they consider it an advertising investment to pay to give the game to non-buyers for exposure and so on.

Also they made over $100k with this experiment so I'd say it was definitely worth it.

After costs? No one is saying they don't know what they are doing...

I have no idea what their costs were but the link posted earlier shows the figures. They made A LOT of profit.
