October 1, 200916 yr On my other computer I am getting the black screen of death when I turn it on. I get nothing on the screen and I don't hear the hard drives going through their booting process. I have two different hard drives, one for Windows XP and the other has Windows 7. Disconnected one and tried the other same results. It was working fine two weeks ago when I last had it running. Hard ware is in place and seated fine, video cards, sound card, etc. War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is StrengthBaldur's Gate moddingTeamBGBaldur's Gate modder/community leaderBaldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition beta testerBaldur's Gate 2 - Enhanced Edition beta tester Icewind Dale - Enhanced Edition beta tester

October 1, 200916 yr The BIOs battery or chip is my first guess as well. "Geez. It's like we lost some sort of bet and ended up saddled with a bunch of terrible new posters on this forum." -Hurlshot
October 2, 200916 yr Author Well, some of the Asus boards are smart because it includes a LCD screen that shows you the boot process. This time I paid attention to it and it comes to a dead stop when it gets to the CPU. If that is the problem I don't know how it could have died. I rarely use that computer. I just had that CPU (E8400) put in last Spring. I have my doubts that it became unseated since the cooler on it is pretty tight. October 2, 200916 yr I just dealt with this issue when I had to repair a PC and it seemed like the motherboard was either bad or the BIOs had been damaged and was defaulting back to an earlier version that did not support the more modern CPUs. Since Asus offered a free replacement I went for that option and did not try the BIOs repair - but you might want to try idea that if you cannot return it or otherwise replace it. "Geez. October 2, 200916 yr Author I bought them both at the same time (over a year ago). I doubt I would be able to get anything out of them warranty wise. But since owning it I noticed that the North and South bridges ran pretty hot compared to this computer. Both of my computers have the same type of motherboards. October 2, 200916 yr Author I prefer the blue screen of death over the black version. The blue version is usually a software, OS, problem and can be taken care for the most part by reformatting the drive and reinstall the OS. Black screen is usually a hardware problem like a dead CPU. Any how I think the CPU got fried. I took off the cooler, took out the CPU, reinstalled it and tried it with the same results. I noticed the cooler wasn't on nice and tight with the CPU. Well there went my E8400 that was hardly used. October 7, 200916 yr Author Just tried a different CPU and still no go. So that must mean its the motherboard. I did various tests with it. I connected some fans to the north bridge area and lights flicker off and on like its not getting enough power to it. Plus when I put that different CPU in one of the fans didn't turn on plus the CPU fan didn't come on. Must be short some where in the north bridge.
