Rostere
Food, and also (especially) alcohol, is expensive in Sweden, so take care to check the prices before you order anything ("Oh, was that price per centilitre?" is a classic). As I understand things, fish dishes should be a local specialty (or maybe that's only because we people in the other parts of Sweden associate Gothenburg with old fishermen), but I have no recommendations there myself. The central area of Gothenburg for restaurants and such lies around the street "Avenyn" in central Gothenburg. It's been almost a year now since I last ate out in Gothenburg, but as I remember things there is a variety of different places to go to in that particular area. If you are short of money and time, an interesting alternative to fast food is the indian restaurant "Mother India" at K "Well, overkill is my middle name. And my last name. Gorgon
I would definently rather go to Copenhagen instead. Just stay away from the street by the station with all the **** shops. Actually if you can make it past the first stretch with crack hos and porn shops it gets very bohemian with art galleries, cafes and eco- speciality shops and whatnot. Junai
Food, and also (especially) alcohol, is expensive in Sweden, so take care to check the prices before you order anything Men lite lol.. In Norway there are bus-companies specializing in Sweden-shopping-tours. People go to Sweden to buy alcohol because it's insanely cheap. Oslo harbour - 9,6 US dollars for a 0,4 litre glass of beer. That's less than a pint. That's not uncommon at all. So there ya go on that one.. J. Edited April 15, 2009 by Junai

Walsingham
It's because alcohol and having fun are the same as alcohol and committing crimes. So they tax everyone rather than deal with alcoholism on a case by case basis. Huzzah! "It wasn't lies. It was just... bull****"." -Elwood Blues tarna's dead; processing... complete. Gfted1
Wow, that staggering. A 12 pack of Budweiser / Bud-Lite cost $8.99, less then a dollar a bottle. The same thing would cost $115.20 in Sweden! Gorgon
Taxing beer and smokes is easier to get away with, and if you want universal healthcare and free higher education you need to milk the taxpayers for as much as they are willing to part with without turning into a murderous mob. mkreku
Not sure if I can give you any worthwhile advice. All I know is that you'll end up in Nordstaden (shopping mall next to the Central station). For some reason everyone ends up there sooner or later. If you want to buy alcohol outside of bars, you need to find a shop (there are plenty of them) called Systembolaget. It's still expensive, but it's around 1/3-1/4 of the price in bars at least. If you're going to bang a blonde, wear a condom. They may look like angels.. If you want to buy nice designer clothes, find a place called D.O. (Design Only). Expensive but high quality and always the latest fashion, with lots of Swedish designers. T-shirts are usually around $50-100 and sweatshirts $200-300 there. If you want to go out to party, I haven't really found any great places.. yet. But I can still recommend Excet (if you enjoy dance music and pop.. and lots of young blondes) and Sticky Fingers (more rock.. and lots of young blondes). Nefertiti is a meat market if you're desperate. If you're interested in architecture, make sure you visit the Opera house. A guided tour is recommended. If you want to see an old castle ruin and be able to throw rocks at seagulls, you can take a ferry to Elfsborgs f Swedes, go to: Spel2, for the latest game reviews in swedish! How can anyone even afford to get drunk? You know, it's pretty easy to buy vodka on the "black market" (sounds ominous when I write it but it's a rather commonplace thing). Vodka brands like for example Viru Valge (estonian vodka) get here from people who buy it in other countries and then brings it back to Sweden. There are people who do it legally and people who do it illegally and there are people who do it for a business and those who don't, and it's often a bit unclear where the line is drawn between these when you buy from someone. Of course that's only talking about how the products were brought into Sweden, all selling of liquor is illegal here except in Systembolaget and in bars with a licence. By writing this, I do not intend to imply that I am taking part of or supporting any sort of criminal behaviour. Oh yeah, and Junai's example was of beer you buy in bars (I think). To compare, if you go to a club in Stockholm, an ordinary drink will easily cost you upwards 13$. A glass of vodka (10 cl, just one step in quality from the very cheapest brands, perhaps Moskovskaya) would be 23$. Men lite lol.. But Norway must be like the only place in the world where alcohol is more expensive than in Sweden. BTW do you have something similar to Systembolaget in Norway? If not, that might explain why alcohol is more expensive where you live. "Well, overkill is my middle name. And my last name. And all of my other names as well!" Walsingham
Don't they have government run booze shops in Norway? Thanks for the advice, mkreku. I'll try to remember the bits about the blondes. I have to say all this about the booze is hardly cheering. I may be getting my flights and accomodation done for me, but it sounds as if I'll spend hundreds on the fething entertainment. Out of interest, how much do the drugs cost? I'm interested because last year govt tax pushed the cost of a pint above a hit of heroin in the UK and we're a gazillion times cheaper. "It wasn't lies. Walsingham
Maybe we shouldn't openly discuss illegal drug prices etc on a public forum... eh? My dear boy, we are discussing drugs in the context of an ongoing debate happening throughout popular culture regarding the relative merits of the various substances from beer to banjos.* I've seen articles asking similar questions in the Financial Times, and Jane's Intelligence Review to mention just two. I'm certainly not condoning their use. I'm simply wondering what the implications are of a policy that makes it easier to get hooked on heroin than have a sociable drink. *banjos? "It wasn't lies.
