new monitor

It's that time again. Two principle reasons for a new monitor arise:

Three. Three principle reasons:

1. I have enough cash spare to afford 300 pounds on a monitor

2. Spring's bright sunshine means I can't see my current monitor during the day when I'm working

3. I need something bigger than 19" to see from across the room when watching DVDs

I could, obviously choose something and do reasonably well. But you chaps deserve these rare supplications.

Mkreku's recommendation certainly looks the business, judging by my scouting around that price bracket. However, I also found this 24" BenQ that has a cd/m2 of 500 compared with 300 on the Samsung. Is that 200 candle power going to make a big difference. I don't have sunlight directly on the screen. But I prefer to have the windows wide behind the screen if possible. I have a large sheet of cardboard up against them today, and it's just weird.

EDIT:

Sometimes advertising copy writers get carried away

Acer G24 monitors feature a well-armored, angular exterior similar to the slanted surfaces on military tanks. This warrior-like appearance complemented by the orange-black color scheme and deeply carved lines on the base projects a rugged military look and feel that will surely entice gamers.

With all due respect to Mkreku, unless I hear a reason not to, I'm going to run with the higher candlepower BenQ unless someone stops me by 1800 hrs GMT.

Size 24" - 1920 x 1200

Brightness - 500 cd/m2

Contrast Ratio - 1000:1

Response time - 6 ms

I've just ordered the Dell Ultrasharp

Mainly because I get really weird if I'm forced to shop for too long. But also because

1. consistently high review scores

2. 400cd/m2 is higher, while the BenQ is supposed to look weird at high power.

3. The screen will last 3 years, at around 8+ hours a day. a few hundred scrimped makes no sense.

I have one. I like it. Its the only lightsource in my room though, so your experience may differ.

We use the 2405WFP's in the office. Pretty slick, work great for games and pretty much everything else as far as I can tell.

Hahah! I rock officially!

Assuming the thing works. It's still not here.

Still not here. According to ebuyer, 0730 to 1200 hrs means 0730 to 1800 hrs. Silly me.

when i first started reading this i thought the thread was started today... then i got to your "it's still not here" comment and wondered exactly how impatient you must be. from futurama (the route of all evil):

I have it now, and am reading this on it. It is fething IMMENSE. I had no idea it would be this big. Words get lost in it, and begin to gibber insanely. Fullscreen, applications have the gravitas of an Imperial Star Destroyer.

Luminosity is not a problem. Sunny day here, blinds up, 80% power, good picture quality.

I started to get excited about this monitor, but the review said not great for "graphic professionals" etc. That made me sad. It sounds pretty cool for most things - my hubby would probably love all those connections and stuff - so it's one I'll keep on my list.

I saw one of those 24"/2ms Sceptres in a store a month ago or so, which had a FPS game playing on it. It looked seriously awesome. I almost bought it, but then went home and the tech reviews were mixed enough to make me frown.

I'm really tired of the 60-80lb behemoth on my desk, tho. I have to learn to overlook my minute pickiness I guess. I haven't yet, but I'm going to, damnit. *bangs head*

I thought the reviews of this wree good for colour fidelity. I can't really tell. It certainly looks good to me. I finally get to see what my video card can do.

Its certainly... a large monitor. Running @ max resolution, you really get a sense of how powerful graphics cards really are. Or you could just run CrapsisCrysis... o:)

To be fair, we have plenty of what you might call "graphics professionals" at Obsidian and this is still the standard monitor for most of them, I believe (outside of the backlit wacoms that some of them rock). If you are doing high-end graphic design for advertising or something, then yeah, you might need something specialized, but at this point the gulf in price between general-use monitors and specialized monitors is pretty significant, or at least it was the last time I checked.

I'm certainly no professional.

I don't know what it is about my eyes. Things like games I don't care much about, as long as it looks reasonably good. But when I start fiddling with photos - which I consider to be different color issues-wise from 'graphics', actually - I can become extremely aggravated/picky and it's like I can see every color/tone pixel imperfection. Nothing is ever going to be 'perfect' of course, but some monitors/TV's are definitely a lot better than others with color reproduction (for my own eyes) and I can see the differences in a big way. I've encountered others who are like me, here and there, and we're endlessly frustrated, lol.

LCD's have become good with contrast and such, making colors look vibrant and appealing. I'm sure that it is a very good monitor for the price etc. Like I said, I just have to get past my own super-pickiness.

No worries, it's understandable. Especially since there is absolutely no way to know what you're in for before you buy (I don't think Best Buy and the like carry Dell monitors, and even if they did it's tough to know how they were calibrated or whatnot). I'm the same way when it comes to gaming mice - I've yet to find a store that has gaming mice on the floor for people to try out (at least not a good sampling of them), so in the end if you want to buy a piece of hardware you wind up having to get it off the internet and hoping that it feels ok. Which is rarely does, at least in my case, as I'm super picky as to the feel of gaming mice. I actually wrote a roundup of them when I wrote for GameSpot and wound up liking none of them. Still sticking with my old Razer Deathadder for the moment.

You mean where the screen is the tablet.

I SO want one of those, unfortunately it's like two months pay. I would want to test one out a bit first. No shops here with a demo of one. Just some Mac thingimagingies that aren't really up to the same standard.

I still have the somewhat cautious sense that I made a good choice. I wouldn't say a screen like this was necessary, but as one of my primary tools during the day it justifies the expense. It's awfully crisp, I can use it with the curtains open on a sunny day, and it's extremely well set up.

As an aside, someone told me that the screeen is made by LG. So the advice to get an LG may have been quite sound.
