Walsingham
Mkreku's recommendation certainly looks the business, judging by my scouting around that price bracket. However, I also found this 24" BenQ that has a cd/m2 of 500 compared with 300 on the Samsung. Is that 200 candle power going to make a big difference. I don't have sunlight directly on the screen. But I prefer to have the windows wide behind the screen if possible. I have a large sheet of cardboard up against them today, and it's just weird. EDIT: Sometimes advertising copy writers get carried away Acer G24 monitors feature a well-armored, angular exterior similar to the slanted surfaces on military tanks. This warrior-like appearance complemented by the orange-black color scheme and deeply carved lines on the base projects a rugged military look and feel that will surely entice gamers. But also because 1. consistently high review scores 2. 400cd/m2 is higher, while the BenQ is supposed to look weird at high power. 3. LadyCrimson
I started to get excited about this monitor, but the review said not great for "graphic professionals" etc. That made me sad. It sounds pretty cool for most things - my hubby would probably love all those connections and stuff - so it's one I'll keep on my list. I saw one of those 24"/2ms Sceptres in a store a month ago or so, which had a FPS game playing on it. It looked seriously awesome. I almost bought it, but then went home and the tech reviews were mixed enough to make me frown. I'm really tired of the 60-80lb behemoth on my desk, tho. I have to learn to overlook my minute pickiness I guess. I haven't yet, but I'm going to, damnit. *bangs head* Edited March 20, 2009 by LadyCrimson “Things are as they are. Matthew Rorie
To be fair, we have plenty of what you might call "graphics professionals" at Obsidian and this is still the standard monitor for most of them, I believe (outside of the backlit wacoms that some of them rock). If you are doing high-end graphic design for advertising or something, then yeah, you might need something specialized, but at this point the gulf in price between general-use monitors and specialized monitors is pretty significant, or at least it was the last time I checked. LadyCrimson
I'm certainly no professional. I don't know what it is about my eyes. Things like games I don't care much about, as long as it looks reasonably good. But when I start fiddling with photos - which I consider to be different color issues-wise from 'graphics', actually - I can become extremely aggravated/picky and it's like I can see every color/tone pixel imperfection. Nothing is ever going to be 'perfect' of course, but some monitors/TV's are definitely a lot better than others with color reproduction (for my own eyes) and I can see the differences in a big way. I've encountered others who are like me, here and there, and we're endlessly frustrated, lol. LCD's have become good with contrast and such, making colors look vibrant and appealing. I'm sure that it is a very good monitor for the price etc. Like I said, I just have to get past my own super-pickiness. “Things are as they are. Especially since there is absolutely no way to know what you're in for before you buy (I don't think Best Buy and the like carry Dell monitors, and even if they did it's tough to know how they were calibrated or whatnot). I'm the same way when it comes to gaming mice - I've yet to find a store that has gaming mice on the floor for people to try out (at least not a good sampling of them), so in the end if you want to buy a piece of hardware you wind up having to get it off the internet and hoping that it feels ok. Which is rarely does, at least in my case, as I'm super picky as to the feel of gaming mice. I actually wrote a roundup of them when I wrote for GameSpot and wound up liking none of them. Still sticking with my old Razer Deathadder for the moment. Matthew Rorie

Walsingham
I still have the somewhat cautious sense that I made a good choice. I wouldn't say a screen like this was necessary, but as one of my primary tools during the day it justifies the expense. It's awfully crisp, I can use it with the curtains open on a sunny day, and it's extremely well set up. As an aside, someone told me that the screeen is made by LG. So the advice to get an LG may have been quite sound. "It wasn't lies. It was just... bull****"." -Elwood Blues tarna's dead; processing... complete. Disappointed by Universe.
