alanschu Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 What indication is there that that's not essentially what they do? All Deus Ex does is change the damage value when you change difficulty levels.
Mamoulian War Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 (edited) That's a gross over-simplification. Yes it is, but it is enough to show my PoV on game difficulty... I know it's very hard to make RPG with more difficulties, but for FPS or Action Adventure game it is almost 75% of what needs to be adjusted... The other things are test the bosses on harder modes so they dont end impossible to kill and add items on lower difficulties and remove items on harder difficulties... seriously whats the reason to pay 50EUR for the game with the best story and best gameplay in the world if it is so simple that i will finnish it in 6 hours and no options for replayability (higher difficulty settings are the easiest way to add more repalyability to the game)? alanschu Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Games for me are more than just the difficulty in experiencing them. I like good stories, interesting characters, and so forth. This is obviously something we differ on. For myself, as someone that rarely has health issues in games, health regeneration is a non-issue.
Mamoulian War Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 (edited) no we do not differ much, the only difference between us is that I care for higher difficulty aswell... Well written game with good gameplay with a 6 hour long playthrough holding your hand all the time and no replayability is not as good 50EUR investment as a well written game with good gameplay 3+ difficulty options and high replayability making you spent 50+ hours to find all the secrets in multiple playthroughs... The easy game is actualy very BAD investment in my eyes. Edited February 23, 2009 by Mamoulian War Sent from my Stone Tablet, using Chisel-a-Talk 2000BC. alanschu Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I don't consider health regen something that makes a game easy. That is where we differ.

Rosbjerg Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Free health regen is a BAD BAD thing for me It can realy take all the excitement from the game SOMEONE has never played Call of Duty 4 I think the Call of Duty series is a great example of how a good health regen system works. But that has much more to the with the genre and style of the game.. Health regeneration in Baldurs Gate would be silly and really take a big bite of the challenge, while CoD is so intense that stopping to patch up would disturb the flow of the game. A good example of precious health packs that become a strategic part of the game; is L4D, here ammo and medpacs are the extremely important items. More so than in any other game I've played. Fortune favors the bald.
alanschu Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 L4D is DEFINITELY a game where health conservation and restoration are integral parts of the game. It's done very well too.

Hell Kitty Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 (edited) What players have to do and what they can choose to do is up to the developers and what it is they want to achieve with their game. What CrashGirl likes to do doesn't equal what the player should have to do. And looks like you are asuming that CrashGirl is the only person in the world who likes to do that things and asume that everybody else likes to play with your way... I'm not saying that at all, and I don't know how you get that from what you quoted. Where exactly have I assumed everyone else likes to play the way I do? CrashGirl is the one saying "this is what players should do", I'm saying that's just one option, and it's not an option the developers have chosen. As for the way I'd like to play, I prefer the system from Battlefield: Bad Company. It doesn't use regen nor does it feature health kits. Instead you have an item you inject yourself with to heal, which has an unlimited amount of uses, but a cooldown period before it can be used again. It eliminates the need to go searching for kits, and the danger of running out entirely, while still being a function the player has to trigger themselves. i played few games with auto regen... there was absolutely no challenge involved... everytime i got low on health and no medpack was around i went to make a call to my gf or friends or make me a food or go to the toilet.. What games were they? In games with regen, your health is restored when you're aren't actually being harmed, so all you're saying is that you were able to leave the game unpaused while your character was in a location safe from harm. Congratulations, you can do the exact same thing in a game with health kits. You know, Deus Ex actually has a pretty easy hand wave to allow for regenerating health. I mean Nanites are doing everything from letting JC breath to increasing his muscules, it'd probably be pretty standard to start putting in a regenerating set (iirc there was one in the first game anyway, it's just you didn't get it till later so early on you'd have to reload because that one gunfight went badly for you). When I was playing Crysis I thought the way the suit functioned would work well in a Deus Ex game. Energy functions as a shield when augs aren't active, with augs active they use all the energy leaving you vulnerable. Edited February 23, 2009 by Hell Kitty

mkreku Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I'm playing Battlefield: Bad Company on the PS3 right now and if you don't think that ENDLESSLY REGENERATING HEALTHPACKS is making the game too easy, then I don't know what would do it for you. L1+R1, shoot shoot shoot, L1+R1 and so on. You're NEVER close to dying, unless you insta-die in an explosion. Regenerating health is not optimal, but after reading about VATS (and thinking it sounded like crap) and then actually playing with it (and realizing that it works), I'm trying not to pre-judge this decision. I'm hoping they'll make it work. Swedes, go to: Spel2, for the latest game reviews in swedish!
Kaftan Barlast Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Battlefield:BC system is a textbook example of unnescessary game mechanics. (you dont have healthpacks or regenerating health, instead you click a button to shoot up some health injection that you have an unlimited supply of..as mkreku described) I think they started with healthpacks, realised it was a dumb idea but decided they didnt want to ditch the injection assets so they went for a really redundant compromise. Kind of like having a feature in a game where you constantly have to tie your shoelaces so you wont trip on them and die. Slowtrain Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Well, suffice it to say then, that I am disappointed DX3 has gone the regen route. It immediately makes the game less appealing to me, so I can only hope that new and interesting gameplay elements will be added in to offset the loss of the health exploration. I also hope that combat is made much more difficult and less clunky and harder to avoid. One hit kills would be nice. That would at least give more of a purpose to the free health. My fear of course is that its going to end up like Invisible War, where everything that made DX awesome was simply removed or dumbed down and nothing was added to replace what was lost. Kaftan Barlast Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I think he's just bashing something he's never tried. Call of Duty 4, the new Rainbow Six games, Gears of War- all outstanding proof that medkits are a thing of the past* * with the exception of games where they're an important part of the gameplay like in L4D, and not just some arbitrary thing that designers use because they dont know of a better solution. DISCLAIMER: Do not take what I write seriously unless it is clearly and in no uncertain terms, declared by me to be meant in a serious and non-humoristic manner. Pidesco Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 The only games I've played extensively, with regenerating health, were Call of Duty 4 and Gears of War. In both those games, the speed of regeneration made everything a lot more boring and challengeless than it needed. While CoD4 kind of maintained the fun due to the different set pieces it threw at the player, Gears of War was made even more repetitive and dull by the regeneration, than it would be without it. Where I'm going with this is that health regeneration being good or bad is, probably, simply a matter of implementation. Also, bad health regen doesn't necessary break a game. All of that said, I have yet to play a game where I felt health regen was well implemented. Edit: Also, I wouldn't call GoW and CoD4 outstanding proof that medkits are a thing of the past. If anything, they're proof that regeneration needs to be fundamentally changed if it's going to work. Morgoth Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Auto-healing has just been invented because designers are too lazy to place the medkits in the maps themself. Rain makes everything better.
