bronzepoem Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 (edited) As we know,a good RPG must have a good background. Both the great fallout and PST have their unique world setting. In fallout the background syncretize Mafia 、hard science and bronchobuster and get a unique style. In such a world, players could get luxuriant experience. When you find NPCs are surprised on a normal item before war, the feeling is so funny. Also PST have the most fantasy world setting. Players walk in to a dream world when they start play. Now Alpha Protocol have a realistic background. We will play the game in a world is just like the world we see in the TV news everyday. So what's sweet point will the genius in Obsidian show us in Alpha world? I think it's a very interesting topic. In my opinion, most interesting thing is travelling in different countries, I'm a Chinese and the beautiful town in Spanish ,Greece and Holand is a dream in my mind. Also it will be coolest to travel in Istanbul and Cairo. My country have some interesting cities such as Hangzhou, Kunming and Sian. Not Shanghai or Hongkong, they are so boring, just like the big cities in American. Please, giveus a big enough world! If players could travel to California and have a gunfight in Obsidian office, I will appreciate you designers very much~ But there are some problems, first, the culture difference. It's boring to play in one culture area. But it's a big project to design many countries with totally different culture. For example, Jade Empire is a game base on Chinese culture. But in fact in our Chinese players' view it looked like Japanese culture more. So in Alpha Protocol when we travel in to a new country, we do not want to see some American wearing other conutries' clothing. It need designers spend many time on the books about culture. Other problem is language. I know a spy could speak many languages, but I don't think it's easy for them to speak Arabic or Indic.Maybe it's a good idea to make some language learnable so our spy could find their firends in different countries and learn new languages from them. Other cool stuff: to get something we could get in our life, I.E. to steal a Lamborghini roadster(So vehicle is a necessary element); have a Damascus scimitar;to steal some canvas from Louvre;Falling in love with a Arab Beauty;Become a big brother in the gangdom of Japan;Buy a castle in Germany;Depasturing a Tibetan mastiff;Learning Kong Fu,Muay Thai,Karate,Kendo.... My poor fancy can't get some better ideas. But I know the genius in Obsidian could do this job perfect. It' really hard to make a realistic world interesting, so do your best! I will buy the game at first time it released. Now let's start discuss and collect more ideas. PS: Obsidian may need more art designers, I'm sorry to say that but the characters in NWN2 looked ugly. H Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 Moscow is mentioned in the article. Please, guys, don't portray Russia as a country where everyone wears ushanka, valenki and trench coat, plays balalaika and drinks vodka in their spare time, and where polar bears roam the streets. Really, films and games that feature Russia and are meant to be taken seriously tend to look pretty pythonesque in these parts. The bottom line: do some research and don't enforce stereotypes.

bronzepoem Posted April 4, 2008 Author Posted April 4, 2008 (edited) In fallout, a outstanding setting is what we do will impact whole the world, New Reno have so many results which depending on our behavior. But this setting disappear in the RPGs after fallout. I think designers shouldn't forget this traditional RPG element. By the way, please do not add a hypocrisy manner to Chinese characters if they are a part of the game. Haljordan Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 Judging by what I've read this seems to get more comparisons (Dialogue and Combat Wise) from Mass Effect inspiration. Judging by when fallout came out it'd probably be more likely they'd observe fallout 3 later this year rather then a decade old game. I think all the stuff you mention sounds nice though. I'm sure they have a fairly large team for this. Though till we see something beyond a handful of screenshots hard to guess much. My two things that would be a sweet point. Very hot swedish woman Lots of foreign cars or else That's it I'm easy to please.
bronzepoem Posted April 4, 2008 Author Posted April 4, 2008 Other idea: DIY a cool computer and use it hacking in to some governments' system. Also we can use it to get job, contact with our firends in other countries. We could get branch quest in internet. So let's remember our other NPCs' ICQ number. As we know in Jagged Alliance2 we could get job by email. We could use google to get some information. Even we could use google map! Ok,it's just a Brainstorming... bronzepoem Posted April 5, 2008 Author Posted April 5, 2008 New idea: Ok in DND world we can earn gold by kill goblin and other monsters. We could rap a dargon and become a magnate. But how could our spy earn enough money to have a comfortable life in the damn realistic world? Maybe there are a easy way----earn bonus by our fist. There are UFC, K-1,MMA,PRIDE,SHOOT and many black boxers. A trained spy could do well in such matchs, even learn new skills in those matchs. A story to scare little kids. But you're the real deal. The demon who dares to challenge God. So what the hell do you want? Don't seem to me like you're out to make this stinkin' world a better place. Why you gotta kill all my men? Why you gotta kill me? Nothing personal. It's just revenge.

I think a spy would like to keep a little lower profile than competing in the UFC. But it would be neat if there was an underground fight club in the game. bronzepoem Posted April 5, 2008 Author Posted April 5, 2008 New idea: I love jarod in <The Pretender>. To Pretend other people well is challenging and exciting. It's a necessary and used skill for an outstnding spy. In AP our protagonist could have some quests which need to pretend someone else and deal with some intractable affair. In such quest, we take photos from the person which we will pretend. Then get the necessary information of him from Internet or related people. At last, we camouflage our face and other details by some stuff. The Success rate could relate with one or more skills. A camera is necessary props for this idea. Yes, an underground fight club is best choice. After more thinking about this idea I find the biggest problem. It need a complex melee system. In 3D RPG there haven't any good solutions to build a interesting and useful melee system before. this problem need to be discussed later. If we have tragedy card in fallout ten years ago, why can't we have poker in AP? The problem is that in a 3D engine game add a new stuff have much higher cost than a 2D engine game. You couldn't descripe a poke game by sereval sentences. It a challenge to our dear designers in Obsidian. But they should do this job well in this market which have so many similar RPG. Pazaak is a card game in Knights of the Old Republic, and Knights of the Old Republic 2. If you haven't played either game, then the reference will make no sense. But I don't see how setting up a tension-filled dialogue while playing a game of high-stakes poker would be any more difficult than a UFC ring with people to fight. Oh, KOTOR is a great series but I haven't play them because there are no Chinese language editions. I don't know how the Pazaak was incarnated in KOTOR. It just be described by dialogue or we could really have a dozen cards and play in desk? What I mean is in a 2009 RPG some players may can't accept a card game which just be described by dialogue so Obsidian need design a dummy card system for them which cost more time and money. A underground fight club also is difficult to be setted up. It need a great engine which have outstanding unarmed combat system. But we want to see both of them in AP. So do your best Obsidian About the unarmed combat I have another topic to discuss it. And a meat grinder like Wanderlei Silva would probably mop the floor with poor little Jason Bourne... in a MMA-style fight. Which aren't the ones a covert operative would pick to begin with. I assume a realistic approach to weapon concealment is a given? That was one of the aspects I liked the most of the Hitman series... and it would be goofy otherwise.

Master Assassin Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 My guess is, the sweet spot will be inhabiting a living, breathing world much like our own, but without the usual legislative, judicial and political leashes we wear daily. To expound on that; I don't know about the rest of you, but being a secret agent to me was akin to being Spiderman or Superman as a kid- the stuff of legends you could say. I played 24 just because I got to be Bauer, played Everything or Nothing simply because it was Bond- have yet to play a Bourne game but given the premise, I'm already on board. As a console player, I'm even more excited because finally, consoles can bring it with that 'nextgen' flair - something PCs have always had the ability to do, albeit at a much steeper price. This far out in the cycle, I'm just waiting and watching...and wondering what they're gonna bring to our table. No sig necessary.

Master Assassin Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 (edited) You know, when I posted initially I knew this question was going to come up so I gave it some thought; here's what I come up with, and this may seem contradictory but here goes: I want there to be consequences. I want it to feel like whatever decision I go with, there are ramifications to be considered- it doesn't necessarily have to manifest physically a la Fable but something...I can't find the word I'm looking for, but I want that whatever choice is made, that the weight of the decision be felt as well as the affected outcome. Who knows, maybe a regime change would occur based on my actions. I like how the dialog is supposed to flow- you can't go back and do it again, just like a real world encounter- I want that to spread to all aspects of gameplay. Edited April 17, 2008 by Master Assassin No sig necessary.
