Will Tomb Raider Doors Slam Shut?

Stock drops and financial losses prompt worries that game publisher SCi will go out of business.

Amid expected losses in 2008, SCi stock tumbled to its lowest point in more than 18 years after Time Warner and an unnamed company removed their takeover bids.

"Management credibility is rock bottom, given heavy use of questionable provisions, failure to achieve release targets, at a time when the market is booming," said analyst Simon Davies in a note to investors via Bloomberg.

SCi acquired the Tomb Raider series with the purchase of Eidos in April 2005 and has since been unable to return the franchise to former greatness.

Lara fans can sleep at night knowing that the recently announced Underworld will still make it to 360, PS3, and PC, but publisher woes will likely affect when. SCi already delayed four unspecified games due to lack of cash, says Bloomberg.

I think the Eidos just waited way too long to inivate the Tomb Raider series. I loved TR1 but years of the same rehash with maybe 1 or 2 new abilities/moves per game wasn't enough to keep people interested in the formula. Even though, imho, the new Tomb Raider Legend/Anniversary have drastically improved the TR series it just wasn't enough to bring back many of the old fans back. I wouldn't be surprised at all if this is the reason for the current lull in TR sales...

Legacy of Cain, the vampire RPG, that was pretty good, but honestly, there is no inkling whether or not they would have been able to do anything with the sequel beyond name recognition.

Tomb Raider was never that fantastic to beging with.

They've had 4 sequels. And the team that did those (minus a few key players regrettably) are the same ones who made the surprisingly good Tomb Raider Legend.

Legacy of Kain (with a K).

Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen (the original)

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2

Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen 2

Legacy of Kain: Defiance

None of which featured people with spiky hair. And the first one of the sequels received "universal acclaim." http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/...q=soul%20reaver

So, I'm at a loss about this "poor" game with a spiky haired descendant.

Are you even talking about the right franchise?

I wasn't a big fan of the second Soul Reaver, either. But the first Soul Reaver and Defiance are still among my favorite games.

Edit: Ouch at that wiki article. Easier?! I remember a section of the game where you were fighting demons in the spectral realm nonstop with nothing to regain health yet the enemies could only be hurt if you were at full health! God, I hated that section.

The krauts they loaned the sequel to screwed it up. It's hard to recover from a botched sequel.

Krauts? What are you talking about? Invisible War was made by the same developers. In Texas.
