Obsidian collaborating together with GearBox?

Featured Replies

From Gamespot: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6171901.html?...estnews;title;4

Pitchford also revealed there was a limited amount of collaboration going on between Gearbox and Obsidian Entertainment (Neverwinter Nights II), which is making an Aliens-based role-playing game. "There's people on our production team that share things with them," he said, before explaining the two titles were "going in totally different directions."

I wonder what were they sharing?

What would be fantastic is if these games are set in their own contained EU. Could be nice to have new novels and etc set in the same EU.

Same art assets, making sure the stories of each game doesn't contradict each other, and the like I would gather. Sounds like a smart move.

Not knowing much about Gearbox and their game, I expect they are using the same basic canon for their research, namely the graphic novels and films (excluding the Yautja ... or are they Hish-qu-Ten?) so it makes sense that they will cover the same ground ... conservation of effort behooves them to share.

They're the Hish if you're reading DH Press' new novels. But it's good to know you're using comics. I hope that means we might get Beserker squads.

What is a Berserker squad? Berserker Xenomorphs, or marines?

Sounds like the Gearbox game is actually taking place during the Aliens movie.

Can't say I'm surprised. Gearbox haven't displayed an original idea in anything I've ever seen them do. So, it seems natural that, with a movie license, they'll just use the actual movie instead of something original in it's universe.

Something is always based on something else. Nothing is original nowadays.

Originality is the ability to at least make it look like you have a creative thought in your head. At the very least originality is a defiance of standard convention. Replacing an interesting physicist protagonist with your average action movie knockoff (OpFor), adding flamethrowers and throwing a rocket launcher on an already existing vehicle (Halo PC), and making yet another World War II shooter really don't strike me in that regard.

Yet people will buy them. I don't think the current market gives a crap about originality anyway, thusly why should developers?

Originality for originality's sake isn't necessarily a great idea. Originality isn't necessarily good, it can be horrible. It can be poorly thought out and implemented just like anything else.

At least if they use the Aliens movie as a backdrop for the game, they have a firm foundation where we hopefully won't end up with them introducing whole new alien races that have no place in the story and don't get explained in the least (OpFor again).

:)

I'm looking through my library and found I have the novelization of that. I hate you guys. I'm seriously getting back into Alien. I'm going to have to get out my AvP and Alien comics as well as my 9 novels to reread.

And I'm still trying to finish The Dark Tower!

The books. The short comic series isn't very hard to get through.

The RPG genre is the WORST for unoriginality ... people like to play the same, comfortable characters and settings evidently ...

I actually have a good guess what format that is, just google for it.

I've been buying the comics, but am waiting to finish the books before reading them.

Sounds like you're being a alittle unfair to me. Sure they've decided commercially to use suxccessful licenses. And t's been a commercial success. But their approach on instilling BIA with true historical verisimillitude was very original. I think they'd be awesome to work with.

My lack of interest in Gearbox's work has nothing to do with licenses. They replaced an interesting character (Gordon Freeman, physicist with a crowbar) with a bog standard action hero (Adrian Shepard, military Corporal with a sniper rifle). They added additional two superweapons to Halo for PC and attached rockets to the warthog (for the record, I kind of like the rocket warthog). And I won't touch another World War II shooter unless it starts featuring alternate histories with giant robots or aliens at this point (a WWII shooter based on the Transformers - GI Joe crossover that took place in WWII would be awesome, but that's beside the point).

I'm not saying they're a bad company. I'm not saying they're not successful. I'm just saying they have the dullest and most stereotypical ideas in games I've seen. This may not be important to others. Heck, it probably wouldn't be important to me if I found any significant value in OpFor, Blue Shift, or Halo PC multiplayer, but I don't.

I'm probably still going to buy their Alien FPS game, too. I may even like it! I can't see them doing anything particularly dull or wrecking with the license, especially if they stick closely to what is known without trying to be particularly creative.

Heck, the entire thing could just be me biased because of how utterly boring I find OpFor to be and how much fun Halo is online until flame and plasma starts flying around. But it has nothing to do with licenses.
