metadigital
I've got the whitebox edition, so I assume it's up to date. Still, many thanks for the link, I'll check it out now. Edit: I see there are loads of fan patches, any recommendations? OBSCVRVM PER OBSCVRIVS ET IGNOTVM PER IGNOTIVS OPVS ARTIFICEM PROBAT
Musopticon?
Don't bother with fan patches. My original Thief: Dark Project works fine with the original patch. And updated textures, which you can find from that same thread, iirc. Just check the thread if the games won't start. Often you don't even need any fanmade files, just twidling with user.ini. or dark.ini. Only if you wish to play fan missions, which there are a lot (talking 700+ here), you'll need special fanmade stuff. PM me if you need any further help. Getting into fanmission is totally worth the effort. kirottu said: I was raised by polar bears. I had to fight against blood thirsty wolves and rabid penguins to get my food. Musopticon?
Fanmissions... *drool* I took a break from them after Christmas and now I have around 18 new ones to play around with. Morgoth
Okay, I want to go and do some Astronomy study now, before I get started back in the Mine-Prison level. Don't bother with it, it's just annoying and further missions get more annoying. Thief1 was cool when it was released, but had too much bad action and stupid zombies that felt opposed to what actually Thief is all about. Better jump into Thief 2 right away: Better mission design, better story, better graphics. And there's an unofficial 13 mission Expansion pack with full VO and Cutscenes available for it, too. www.thief2x.com Download and play it after finishing Thief2. It's the best FM out there. Edit: Oh yes, I was too lazy yesterday to post the exact thread regarding running Thief1/2 on WinXP. Here you go! Edited June 8, 2007 by Morgoth Rain makes everything better. Musopticon?
Pfft. You could argue that both Thiefs had worse and worse mission design the further you got. And you still would not be right, since both late games have so many bright spots as well. Just like in Thief 2 Casing the Joint and Soulforge were horrible, but Life of the Party the best mission ever, both Undercover and Return to the Haunted Cathedral are awesome while Strange Bedfellows and The Maw were less than stellar in Thief 1. Much less. Usually when it comes to arguing over Thiefs, there's the people who hate supernatural stuff and the ones who can't help but love it. Often people prefer one game over the other based on which one they played first, but since I don't know which one it was for you, I'll go on a limb and say that you played the second one through and never finished the first. Otherwise you wouldn't bother with lies like "better mission design" or "better story". Seriously, you thought the whole rust gas business with Karras made a compelling plot? Heck, I was just following the thing because the missions kept being decent. Truding deep into the City's pagan plots was far more interesting, especially since Garrett actually had a reason for following the plot besides the archaic "let's save the world". I'll grant that the narrative was better in Thief 2, in Dark Project it took longer to get the plot going and any hooks in place(Assassins) and ther weren't many ties to the main plot arch until The Sword/i], while Thief 2 started throwing them to you after Shoalsgate Station and didn't let go. Maybe you just don't like the supernatural elements there. Too bad. Edited June 8, 2007 by Musopticon? kirottu said: I was raised by polar bears. Morgoth
Maybe you just don't like the supernatural elements there. Too bad. I just don't like clunky fights with Zombies that keep coming and coming, not to mention the bad-breath-dinosaur creatures. It wasn't a game killer, but still annoyed the hell out of me.I often got lost too, with no hints where to continue....very frustrating. Thief 2 had better (and bigger) missions that suggested the player to use his tools more intensely. It also made better use of in-game hints like conversations and such. I felt more like playing a Thief rather than a mere rogue. Apart from the first TDP mission, it became worse and worse, while Thief2 kept getting better and better. Thief 2 > Thief1. Deal with the truth! Rain makes everything better.
Hell Kitty
Apart from the first TDP mission, it became worse and worse That is a filthy, filthy lie. Song of the Caverns (Thief Gold) is the best, and that's not just my opinion, it's The Truth! Actually I do prefer TMA (I played TDP first though) because I do prefer the "breakin' in to buildings" levels to the supernatural stuff, but the zombie levels aren't at all about action like you claim. And as much as people might deny it, Thief was always about The Chosen One saving the World , it just didn't push that angle the way RPGs do. Oh man, I NEED to replay these right now. Mus, what fm is that pic from? Thief has the type of non-linearity I look for in games. Sure the story is completely linear, but I have the freedom to explore and complete my objectives as I see fit. It's why I love DX as well. edit: I'm currently playing through Gears of War and the world really come across like a future version of the Thief world. Even the Gears could be the military arm of the Hammers. Edited June 9, 2007 by Hell Kitty
Musopticon?
It's The Ashen Age Part 1, byt Sliptip. The Circle has an article about the author if you follow the url in the link. And meh, I prefer Thief 2's gameplay(tap-sneaking, cameras, no apparitions, Life of the Party), but Thief 1 has superior athmosphere and story. Edit: About GoW, the part where they get back from the Caverns and stop over at the Historical Society(you can see these huge flags on a building), there was a definity Hammerite feeling. Otherwise it felt more like playing in a Hive City from WH4Ok society, even the Cogs were more like Ultramarine First Company Tyranid-hunters. The cog symbol though, I can't help but to think of Mechnists all the time. My friend wonders why I always laugh at it. Edit2: I need Thief Gold. I still haven't played it. Musopticon?
It's what Thief 1 should have been apparently. There never was an expansion for the game, but the Gold edition introduced three new missions, like an expansion pack, for the story and changed some levels(I think there was some extra areas and at least one new enemy). You don't necessarily need Thief Gold for the missions(they've been done as fanmissions for normal Dark Project already and Thief 2 as well), but I'm aiming for completeness. Not to mention, the missions are not afterthoughts, but integrate in to the original campaign and story. Edited June 10, 2007 by Musopticon? kirottu said: I was raised by polar bears.
