mkreku is right, 'realistic and level-headed' sounds like cop out.. I hope this turns out good.

Well if you put it that way then it's the greatest engine you've ever dreamed of. Wait... it's better than your dreams.

We're developing the engine to do exactly the things we believe are important for the game we're making. We aren't developing it as a middleware engine or to do everything in the world well. "Realistic and level-headed" means being focused, not pessimistic.

This is what I meant! (Warren Spector is obviously better wityh words than me..):

I always say this to my teams, and they hate it when I say this, but

Swedes, go to: Spel2, for the latest game reviews in swedish!

I hope I can get involved in some nasty corporate politics with the Weyland-Yutani Corp.

I hope each encounter with an alien(s) will be terrifyingly special. I just watched Aliens the other day and Ripley just devastating loads and loads of Aliens just seemed silly at the end, though very entertaining.

I hope I have the option of playing as a rogue synthetic.

Can we have a diplomacy option with the Alien Queen? Bring her more (live) bodies for embryo implantation, she provides us with deadly acid weapons or a guardian pet. Hehe. Of course we both have the option of betraying each other.

That's exactly why I admire Deep Shadows attempt at Boiling Point and why I'm looking forward to White Gold (Boiling Point 2).

Most game failures aren't spectacular; they're just uneven and crummy. It's good to have a high concept, but you still have to narrow down what you want to accomplish and spend time wisely. I think there will be plenty of new and interesting things in our engine that contribute directly to gameplay, but if we were to say that everything in the engine would be new and interesting, it would either a) never get done or b) get done halfway and be a pile of junk across the board.

I'd rather have a good, fun game that didn't have anything 'new or original' than a 'new, original' game that was buggy, uneven, awful, and simply unfun. I want to enjoy games I buy; not be experimented on. That's what QA testers are paid to do. Now, if the 'new and original' game is also fun then bring it on.

I prefer a game that doesn't insult my intelligence and taste, even if that means some "experimental" stuff is going on, which often leads to more bugs. Still, better than a mediocre bugfree POS.

Why should new stuff automatically mean problems?

This post is not to be enjoyed, discussed, or referenced on company time.

Why should new stuff automatically mean problems?

I didn't say new, I said "experimental".... i.e. simulation stuff. If programmed sloppy = catastrophy. Not to mention unpredictable behaviours that can eliminate design decisions. The good thing is there're lots of surprises. But that's just one thing.

Experimental can also mean a new type of interface or new ways to engage characters, or new ways for narrative. Like going away from the cutscene-gameplay-cutscene structure but doing cool stuff like Fahrenheit or Mass Effect.... something that doesn't always end up like "Oh, I've seen that before" feeling. Is kirottu-san happy now?

Anyway, since JE doesn't need do bother with silly D&D conventions anymore, I trust he'll have something "cool" and innovative for us in store with Alien. :sorcerer:

I am still wondering why would anyone want to make a game based on a dead movie franchise? Obviously Sega hired Obsidian to do so, but why? Just doesn't mke any sort of sense.

Murphy's Law of Computer Gaming: The listed minimum specifications written on the box by the publisher are not the minimum specifications of the game set by the developer.

Because when I tell people that I'm working on an Aliens game, every other person says, "OMG I LOVE ALIENS!" For a dead movie franchise, it still sure has a lot of fans.

That doesn't mean that it will be marketable or that the newer generation of gamers will even know who H. R. Giger is or seen the movies except for that horrid Alien versus Predator garbage. It just seems really odd to make a game, out of the blue, on a franchise that people have to strain their minds to remember.

Alien may be old, but it's not forgotten. And who cares about the "newer generation of gamers"? I hope this game is aimed at the older, or "mature" audience of gamers who certainly should be familiar with Alien.

I like the Alien franchise (not my fave; but I enjoyed the films); but who's this geek you speak of?

Nope. Butr, I'll hazard a guess (prior to K's links). From your worship of him, I gather that he's the creator of the Alien Franchise.

R00fles!

edit: Ahh.. He's responsible for how Aliens look. D0uble R00fles!

Because there is a new Alien movie comming out (in 2008?) and these three game comissioned will be part of that franchise

Well, there's a new Alien vs Predator movie coming out...don't know if that counts since the last one was crappy to the xtreme. I've probably already mentioned it but Ridley Scott and James Cameron were in talks to team up on Alien 5 until Fox decided to go with AvP instead. That has to be one of the worst decisions in filmmaking history. :dragon:

(It's completely off-topic, but did you know Orson Welles planned to make a Batman movie? He had concepts drawn and everything.)

18.

Seen Alien about half a dozen times; same with Aliens.

And not a clue who H.R. Giger was before Morgoth posted these links... why would we need to know that to enjoy the movies; or even a game about Aliens? :ermm:

PS. Not seen Aliens VS. Predator movie. Did play the game though...

roffle.

Yeah, dead.

That's why games keep getting made and selling.

That's why people keep hoping for new additions to the franchise.

People hoped for additions for the Star Wars franchise and we all saw the result of that with those prequels. *shudder*

I rather see a franchise stay dead than spewed crap come for it just becuase fans are too stupid to appreciate what they already got.

Ofcourse without it there would never be a KOTOR (1/2) either...

And then who know what would have happened to OE... :)
