Watchman Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 I have played with magnets now and then just for fun but always thought metal was just about all a magnet could effect. I just found out that manetic fields can affect anything! Frogs, water, even fruit is not safe! Strawberries tomatoes It would seem to me that we will be hearing more about this in the future. Anyways just though I would share that with you all.
213374U Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 You know those are magnetic fields how? - When he is best, he is a little worse than a man, and when he is worst, he is little better than a beast.
Diamond Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Because these are the videos from the High Field Magnetic Laboratory's website?
213374U Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Because these are the videos from the High Field Magnetic Laboratory's website?Actually, it's the High Field Magnet Laboratory. If you're going to play smartass, at least try to make sense. ) - When he is best, he is a little worse than a man, and when he is worst, he is little better than a beast.
Watchman Posted January 8, 2007 Author Posted January 8, 2007 This is not an effort to sell anything. I just thought it was cool. How do I know if they are real? I never thought that would come up, the site has many others of magnets doing all the stuff you would exspect. But who wants to see that? There was more with water but the one I posted is enough. Its quite clear. As I have not put all the data that I read down - don't think there is a need - mainly because it has LOTS of techical wording . I can fill you in on some basics... simplified. It takes a VERY strong magnet!!! OMG! Averge objects like water only have like .00001% the reponce to magnetism that mangets you play with might have. So you won't be doing this at home. :'( The frog and other odd ball things you see were just to prove it could be done to all of us none super geeks that can't tell the diffence between stuff the geeks would be using to prove the same point. :"> Air or anything elss you can think of can not acheive what you see but feel free to look for wires.
Nartwak Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 (edited) Look, I'll admit some interest in your product. Sometimes I don't feel like cleaning up after my pets shedding, can your magnets help me? Are your magnets easy to store? Edit: What sort of safety equipment do you offer? Unfortunately, with the cost of generating strong magnetic fields (I was told it was around $5k/T), I don't think we'll be seeing it in widespread use anytime soon... Air or anything elss you can think of can not acheive what you see but feel free to look for wires.Meh. I'm sure an SFX specialist could think of a few ways to simulate that. Not saying those are fake, though. - When he is best, he is a little worse than a man, and when he is worst, he is little better than a beast.

taks Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 magnets primarily effect ferrous materials, i.e. those containing iron (not just "metal"). nearly everything is effected to some degree. wiki has a nice article on it (just search for "magnet"). taks comrade taks... just because.
taks Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 i must admit, however, that i had always thought magnets effected ONLY ferrous materials, rationalizing that nearly every living critter has iron its body to some extent to explain the frog phenomenon. apparently this was a bad assumption. taks comrade taks... just because.
metadigital Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 could be water and the electro-magnetic forces. OBSCVRVM PER OBSCVRIVS ET IGNOTVM PER IGNOTIVS OPVS ARTIFICEM PROBAT
taks Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 no, apparently every element has an associated permeability w.r.t. magnetism. read the wiki article (some of that was news to me, actually). good thing i'm teaching an electromagnetics course this semester, eh? taks comrade taks... just because.
Tale Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Magneto was a weakling. "Show me a man who "plays fair" and I'll show you a very talented cheater."
metadigital Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 no, apparently every element has an associated permeability w.r.t. magnetism. read the wiki article (some of that was news to me, actually). good thing i'm teaching an electromagnetics course this semester, eh? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> So all that abuse hurled at people who wear magnets and by Science theatre 3000 at This Island Earth for the comment about their hands being stuck like magnets was in vain? Nah ... OBSCVRVM PER OBSCVRIVS ET IGNOTVM PER IGNOTIVS OPVS ARTIFICEM PROBAT
taks Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 based on what i read, the effect is many orders of magnitude lower for non-ferrous materials, so not in vain. magnet worshippers are morons. taks comrade taks... just because.
alanschu Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 I could see some truth in the statements I have heard about magnets helping to deal with pain, as the magnetic field could interrupt electrical signals (I'm not a biologist though), but the "healing" properties of magnets make me laugh. Even then, the pain killing aspect could just be placebo.
Watchman Posted January 9, 2007 Author Posted January 9, 2007 Glad to see I was not the only one that had never seen this b4. :"> The description I have is a simple one. Maybe too simple. But I don't think this is a place for anything long winded. I don't think you should try this at home. And if you were smart enough to build something that could do this -which is not likely- I would hope you are smart enough not to get yourself hurt. Plz enjoy this post with nothing more than the "Look at that! Isn't that cool" with which it was created.

Even then, the pain killing aspect could just be placebo. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> definitely placebo. the gravity and electromagnetic effects from the earth alone dwarf anything from a simple bracelet. taks comrade taks... just because.

metadigital Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 Looks like the kind of fun thing to play with whilst in a casino ... the sort of thing that really annoys the other players. :D OBSCVRVM PER OBSCVRIVS ET IGNOTVM PER IGNOTIVS OPVS ARTIFICEM PROBAT
Surreptishus Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 Yeah, play with it near people with pacemakers
