Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, in the first two movies the aliens were actually pretty slow and ponderous.  The marines never had problems shooting them as long as they could see them coming.  And when Ripley and Newt were in the egg chamber, Ripley had no problems shooting a bunch of them all by herself when they tried to rush her.

I would say they are able to articulate their bodies quickly, but are relatively slow but relentless when actually propelling themselves along.

Exactly, in Alien and Aliens, if a xenomorph is alone, it will use stealth to get very close to you, before to strike like lightning. If you are dealing with a swarm, they will surround you methodically and frantically before they take you apart.

The dog-like Alien that runs very fast was such a dumb idea.

No offense, I reckon movies 3 and 4 are sad facts of life. I think most fans agree they did not improve the Alien universe.

Hence, since you cannot justify future mistakes using past mistakes, reason commands that only the best of movies 1, 2, 3, 4 be used to further the franchise. It so happens that most of the best contributions are in movies 1 and 2.

You don't decide what is "best". And regardless of any polls (lol), I think Josh already said in this very thread that all four movies are part of the canon they are bound to follow.

So, whatever.

- When he is best, he is a little worse than a man, and when he is worst, he is little better than a beast.

I'm of the view that if something is canon, then not liking it doesn't stop it from being canon.

So I guess that means there are both fast aliens and slow aliens, and no reason Obsidian can't include both.

The dog-like Alien that runs very fast was such a dumb idea.
Most solid argument ever.

Maybe the aliens mutated and got faster. They seem like a rather adaptable organism.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

It's not an argument. It's an opinion. Opinions are cheap and painless. You should know, you have yours.

I'm sure Fox thinks it's canon. I just don't like bibles, dead scrolls, ancient tablets that force you to turn off your brain because they are canon and therefore can only be good and right.

Yes, maybe. It starts to sound like a Resident Evil chorus, though.

In nature, genetic mutations take years, if not centuries.

I'm not as keen as I seem on ignoring movies 3 and 4. One could pick and pull a few elements from these movies to. I'm just saying we should not treat them as part of The 10 Commandments.

True, I'm just wondering if the aliens have some sort of advanced mutative ability to respond to environmental challenges. Or perhasp ther are a merely species that evolves at a extremely rapid rate. So each generation is not only faster, but smarte, stronger, etc. Certainly, the rate of growth of a single alien from 10 cm chestbuster to 2.5 meter tall headsmasher is incredibly rapid.

Agree with the p.o.v that third-person just works great in a survival horror setting. Get it?
There's nothing to "get", because that's merely your opinion. An opinion so far (and despite what Josh might say) unsupported by facts, but still. :)

Get it?

He said "get it" because it was a pun. He agreed with the "point of view" about having a third person point of view.

I'm sure Fox thinks it's canon.
And therefore, it is canon, regardless of what you might think.

Funny you would use the bible analogy, as the word canon itself is borrowed from that context and implies "turning off your brain" and accepting whatever is being passed off as "canon", as it only obeys the rules of the maker of said works (in this case, God). But anyway, It's just that the IP belongs to someone else. They decide what is part of it, and what isn't. They made it, and they can do whatever they want with it. Anyone is free to have opinions and preferences, but they are irrelevant when determining what is canon.

You don't like it, that's fine. Go and make your own Aliens-based IP with your own rules that makes perfect sense to you. Maybe you'll get lucky and something will be made and published out of it. That, however, will never be the Aliens franchise owned by Fox.

In nature, there are no organisms that can grow from a few centimetres to about two metres in height, in a few hours either (not to mention the acid for blood thing). So I guess that means those aliens don't fit well in Aliens, either.

Good show.

- When he is best, he is a little worse than a man, and when he is worst, he is little better than a beast.

Not to fans...to fans there are 2 movies only...the rest is donkey poo.

In Alien and Aliens, I don't see them move faster than humans. That's an "invention" of movies 3 and 4.

And I don't think this discussion can be ended.

Regardless of whether "fans" want to acknowledge them or not, Obsidian is bound by the four movies.

So if something was "invented" in movies 3 and 4, then you have to consider it.

So subtle a pun it barely is one? :)

Get it?
Guess not.

Since The Pilot mentioned "Xenomorph," when exactly did it get its name?

When Ripley is giving her debriefing about what happened to the Nostromo, one of the people in the room comments about how it was a species never recorded. Yet, when they are on the Sulaco, Lt. Gorman says that "We think a Xenomorph may be involved."

It sounded like they already had a term called "Xenomorph" and then just applied it to this new unknown alien, like it was a classification.

Meh, that's the way I saw it. Made sense to me.

Oh well.

The dog-like Alien that runs very fast was such a dumb idea.

I disagree completely. :)

It shows the genetic diversity and raw power of the alien in it's ability to take advantage of whatever form of creature it uses to incubate.

THAT is scary. :)

You would be correct. :)

Is this a standup fight, sir, or just another bug-hunt?

We believe a Xenomorph may be involved.

A what?

It's a bug-hunt.

Paraphrased somewhat.

In the Batman Versus Alien comic the Alien incubated in an alligator. Big nasty bugger to. :)

The movement speed and style of the aliens varies from film to film. In the original Alien, Ridley Scott couldn't have shown the alien move quickly if he wanted to. The ADI folks told us the alien suit was quite inflexible and heavy. All of the alien's targets are practically standing still when it takes them out (Brett under the chains, Dallas in the tunnel, Parker and Lambert in the hallway). In fact, I think the only time you really see the alien walking clearly is in the Narcissus. Even then it's moving very slowly.

But I don't really take that to mean that aliens have to be slow. Aliens are described and perceived as incredible predators. Considering how terribly slow human beings are, it would be sad indeed if aliens were as slow as them.

ah ha. So the alien didn't evolve, but the sfx technology did!

Reality is always so boring. :D

I hope the game is first person. Really I do.

OK...the consensus seems to be going that way...so...I must bow...

Hopefully, no xenomorph will mutate into Nemesis or Milla Jovovich, Gandalf, Locust or some other fad. That would kind of turn me off, but I'm only one guy.

Josh, please don't forget cyborgs, maybe main char could be one. :)

It depends if the alien is protecting or building the hive or on a solo hunt. If a alien is protecting and/or building the hive it will probably want to take out the enemy and get breeding fodder as quickly as possible. That is the behavior of the aliens in the second movie. A solo hunter might want to "play" with its prey, slowly stalking them, heightening their fear, which in turn gives the alien a greater satisfaction for the kill. This gives the xenomorph a more malicious aspect. However since the xenomorph in Alien 3 showed more animal aspects it seems to me that its behavior is governed by what type of creature the xenomorph gestates in, acclimating some of the DNA of the host.

That would mean a xenomorph that gestates in a human being would have the capability of being sentient, while a xenomorph coming from a lower animal species would not. This in of itself probably is something you should take a look into, J.E., when developing the A.I. for the alien critters.

Well the CGI Alien in Alien 3 looked rather dumb. Those in Ressurection were a little better (the one that crawled into the escape pot), but didn't quite matched the movements of the human puppets/robotic versions.

Oh, one other important question for Josh: Does Obsidian have an in-house SoundFX team? Don't underestimate the the usage of properly placed sound sources in the levels, it's an incredibly powerful tool to create suspense. I'm also wondering who will be chosen as music composer?
