I think everyone is... the imperial guard are getting some "hard" armor (that doesn't require god knows how many upgrades like the leeman) and some people based defenses. I think they also get honest to god cavalry.

Sweet, I guess I'll go IG and Tau first of all. I've always enjoyed playing the shooty factions in Dawn of War. After that I'll probably go green and propa' stomp those 'oomies' downz inta de mud.

Why is the Imperium reguarded as "good" when it's run by (essencially) a fleshy chaos god? I mean you've got a guy who has LIMITLESS psychic abilities and yet he's parked on a chair with hemmeroids up the yinyang and is able to beat up chaos gods in combat. But he isn't benevolent by anyones standards... he's a tyrant who just is trying to propogate his own species upon the universe when it would make much more sense to try for a coalition to kill the "eternal Enemy"

 

Of course the Eldar probably wouldn't be amicable to this given as they don't want to let any younger races in on how the world works.

Well, the Tau are sort of good and the Eldar aren't exactly malignant, just very prejudiced and xenophobic. Same goes for the Imperium.

 

In game terms, if you play as the Imperial Guard, you are essentially defending civilians, so I guess they could called good.

But you are also exterminating alien races, in some cases for no other reason than them being non-human. The Tau would want them to join their empire instead, the Imperium would never give them that option.

 

The Imperium is sorta like the swedes, in there between good and evil somewhere.

Which is fine if your idea of the good guys is the communists.

 

...you know, as opposed to fanatical warrior monks, undead robots who want to destroy all life, greenskins or demons.

They're idealists, the communists of the utopian world.

 

As in, not the communists of ancient Terra. Those are embodied in the Imperium if you think about it... tyranni, political officers in the field (commissars), complete and utter disregard of the lives of their soldiers (and civilians), hell even the high peaked officer and commissar caps!

It's true that Imperial Guard have a strong Red Army bend. I really like them, poor men with huge weapons amongst gods and demons of the cosmos made manifest.

 

As for the Tau, it's true that they seek to spread their Greater Good by conquering all of the known galaxy under their rule, but they don't expect everyone to worship a long-dead emperor on a golden throne and die for him fighting in fanatic exterminating squads on the other side of the galaxy. Kind of a lighter bend on the whole galactic empire thing.

Thats what I liked so much about them. Before dropping the game (when 3rd edition rules were released) I had a sizeable Valhallan army, 24 infanttry squads and 14 tanks. My friends had equally large Eldar, Chaos Marine and Space Marine armies. Sometimes, we would drop the 4x8 foot table and use the entire living room floor as battlefield, pitching in all the scenery we could put our hands on

 

A handful of Commissars enforced discipline and summarily executed officers and squad leaders if/when they failed leadership tests

 

*Sigh*

 

Why did they have to ruin the game like they did with the Epic Space Marine system
