kumquatq3
Seems to me alot of games have been decided or drastically effected by flops and/or bad calls, but that just might be normal, havn't really watched a cup before this year.
mkreku
Unfortunately, that's quite normal. It's also the reason why I prefer the tough man attitude of hockey far more than the reward-the-sissy attitude of football. Swedes, go to: Spel2, for the latest game reviews in swedish! Guest The Architect
 :'( ****in piece of **** ref! What a ****head! I thought the ref was fine until Italy's late penalty win. I felt for us, I felt sorry for the players (especially Lucas Neill) because we played well IMHO and DID NOT deserve that cruel twist of fate at the end. IT WAS NOT A BLOODY PENALTY! We did extremely well without Harry Kewell and Brett Emerton, god damn it! We needed them, but unfortunately Kewell was injured and Emerton was suspended. Does the rest of the world fear us or something? Because the referees have been such ****ing one eyed dickheads it's not funny. You know, I was worried about us conceding a late goal against Italy, and it happened (BUT IT NEVER SHOULD HAVE)! ****! I had a feeling that corrupt Italy would dive in the penalty box so late in the game if they got forward, they practice it! Yep that's right, on Sunrise this morning, they showed footage of the Italians training and guess what they were practicing? Different diving techniques, no joke! I felt the one thing we needed to do more which we didn't was dive so we could earn more free kicks or penalties, it seems to me like diving has become a commonly used tactic amongst soccer teams. If you ask me, I think the ref deliberately gave Italy the penalty, you can never trust the Italians, correct me if I'm wrong but weren't 13 of the 23 players in the Italy squad and the coach Marcello Lippi involved in the match fixing scandal. We got knocked out in a very cruel, heartbreaking way, I was yelling at the top of my lungs when that payed piece of **** ref awarded Italy that late penalty. Then when they scored, and the full time whistle blew, I just sat there in my chair, so shocked, so devastated and so angry too. We deserved better. WHY THE **** DIDN'T WE GET A DECENT UNBIASED LEGIT REF?! WE GOT SCREWED BY THE REF'S AT THE WORLD CUP! I was that upset, I almost cried, and that's saying a lot because I've never even come remotely close to crying over a soccer match, but I almost did last night. I FEEL YOUR PAIN SOCCEROOS! BUT NONETHELESS, YOU DONE ME AND OUR ENTIRE COUNTRY VERY PROUD! IN MY EYES AND THE EYES OF MANY OF US AUSSIES, YOU EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS. We were robbed IMHO. It's as if the ref couldn't be stuffed continuing into extra time so he just decided to award Italy the penalty and get the game over with. **** OFF REFS! I wonder why Guus didn't bring Kennedy on? Maybe he was thinking about extra time and wasn't expecting that horrible penalty to happen right at the end. Because what we lacked was height in the penalty box with our deliveries and a player that's good at holding the ball up like he is and creating enough time for the midfielders was what we needed. I feel that Kennedy could of won it for us, if Guus should have brought him on, but hey, I'm not taking anything away from the genius, he's done so much for us, and it is very sad to see him go to friggin Russia. But perhaps after the Euro 2008 Championships (if Russia make it) then possibly Guus might want to return to the Socceroos, I highly doubt that, but Guus is a legend, I wish he could coach the Socceroos for the 2010 and 2014 World Cups. But without Guus and most of our golden generation of players being veterans by 2010, I fear it won't be a very long time before we get back into the knockout phases. PLEASE RETURN TO US GUUS AFTER EURO 2008! YOU ARE OUR GOD BACK IN AUSTRALIA! WE WORSHIP YOU AND THE PLAYERS! Well, I do have Italian heritage and technically Italy WAS going to be my second team if we got knocked out, but after what I saw, nah, I just can't bring myself around to go for them, so go Germany or Argentina, whoever wins! But what does it matter? England's going to win the World Cup...unfortunately, just you wait and see folks. But I hope I'm wrong... metadigital
What the hell? Referee decided to let Italy win. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I think (even though it was a clear dive) that it was a pretty fair game that ended with the correct result; after all the ref sent an Italian player off for almost the entire second half. Italy just are very very good at defending. But Australia didn't embarrass themselves, they just couldn't take full advantage and penetrate the excellent defence. Good game. Yes, of course he tripped over that player in the box, but it's not as if he was trying to avoid it. On the contrary, that was exactly what he wanted to happen, and the referee just decided to go along with it. No, I didn't want another 30 minutes of it either, but if Australia feels cheated, then I can't blame them. I can't blame Italy for the win, though. The played a fair game and deserved the win just slightly more than Australia did IMHO. Visit my KotOR blog at Deadly Forums.
Mtthz
What the hell? Referee decided to let Italy win. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yeah. I still don't get it. That guy from Australia was lying on his back and the Italian decide to fall over him. And he gets a penalykick. Well almost all the referees on the World Cup are horrible. Really horrible. Well today Brazil against Ghana and Spain vs. France. I really hope that Ghana and Spain will win.
Tigranes
While it's always dangerous to assume anything that could be contrived as suspicious IS suspicious (e.g. Korea/Turkey upset in 2002, "home advantage" teams, etc...), the refs this cup don't seem to need any incentive other than their own to suck horribly. On the other hand, I was also disappointed by Portugal... they didn't usually play like they did against the Dutch, deliberately stepping up the agression and late tackles to break the game. While I have no doubt that it was 'efficient' and the Dutch could have done better, none of that matters when the football is sacrificed. Brazil will win that game. I think Spain will win against France, though. The French game has been horrible in this world cup and was in the last one too. Why they haven't built a new team is completely beyond me, but they'll pay the price for it, I think... again! Besides, if Spain can play up to the high standards they demonstrated in their first two matches, France won't have a prayer (and Spain's last game doesn't really count, since they didn't even try to win... and won anyway). EDIT: Brazil leads 1-0 against Ghana. That's it for Ghana, I fear... Edited June 27, 2006 by Jediphile Visit my KotOR blog at Deadly Forums. France is really really horrible on this World Cup. They played like crap against Switserland, they played like crap against Korea and they played like crap against Togo. And with a little bit of luck they made it into the second round. Spain however played an excellent game against the Ukraine and although the game against Tunesia wasn't that good, Spain showed that they also can play very effective and have some great players left on the bench. The game against S-Arabia was horrible, but that one didn't count. For the first time I think that Spain can win the World Cup. I hope they win against the French and play against Brazil in the next round. Then they will play against England or *cough* Portugal and then the final against Argentina or Italy. Jediphile
Well, so long to Ghana... They were a breath of fresh air in the cup, but were punished heavily for being very aggressive in their game (aggressive in the sense of trying very hard to go on the offense and score goals) and forgetting their defense. Though I'll join those who cry foul over the second goal for being off-side, I do think Brazil earned their win, and could easily have scored several goals in the last 15 minutes or so. Ghana's goalkeeper got to show his skills, at least. So Brazil is through to the next round. Still, if it turns out as I expect, Spain will win later tonight against France, and then Brazil will be kicked out by Spain in the next round. If Spain can keep up their game, they're strong contenders to win the cup, methinks. Visit my KotOR blog at Deadly Forums.

Jediphile
1-1 between France and Spain so far. What an excellent game with lots of good football. The French have surprised me today - they're much better than previously in the cup, though I still think Spain will wear them down and win the game. Still, with the game they have today and their obvious routine, France may yet walk away in triumph. Visit my KotOR blog at Deadly Forums.

Could use more goals, though, as it's pretty sad that we have to force penalties to score. France's goal was as much the result of their picking up the pace, as it's a consequence of Spain's fear of Henry and the killer pass not going to him... SteveThaiBinh
Oh no, France has scored! I guess Spain is probably on the way out. It's a shame because they've been more entertaining to watch over the tournament and I'd say they've shown the potential to be the better team. But then, that's always the way with Spain - all potential and little follow-through. Still, seven minutes to go...
