How much Melvins have you listened to? Proto-grunge is a as stupid a concept as grunge itself.

 

Yeah they've been pretty strongly influenced by various hardcore bands. But you'd have to be deaf not to hear stuff like early Sabbath in there too.

 

There's probably some Butthole Surfers and Killdozer influences in there as well.

 

You've basically got a ****load of stoner, raw punk, experimental elements.

 

They definitely transcend conventional genres. I just like adding them to just about every best-off list I make.
