Do you really think ATI would sell as well as they do if overheating or complete PC crashes were common..? Trust me, overheating problems are no more common on ATI than they are on Nvidia, unless everyone has already forgotten the debacle that was the release of the Geforce 5700..

Do you really think ATI would sell as well as they do if overheating or complete PC crashes were common..? Trust me, overheating problems are no more common on ATI than they are on Nvidia, unless everyone has already forgotten the debacle that was the release of the Geforce 5700..

It is actually pretty commonly accepted that ati has more heat issues than nvidia. It is prety much a fact that ati driver support is not as good as nvidia's. It is generally true that ati's technology is more ambitious in scope and advanced functionality. As a cost, you have to live with short-sighted driver production and higher heat. Thats just the nature of the beast.

 

As for the 5700, I don't recall any truely horrible stories with them, and I used a 5700, and a 5700 FX, as did my closest friend, my sister and several office rigs. Were there issues with the card? Sure, but there are issues with any card.

Nvidia DOES support SM3 with AA. What is doesn't support is HDR with AA.

I have never had any problems with Nvidia or ATI. All their drivers and cards work fine for me.

Theyve improved since then but nVidia have better drivers and are better supported in most games. The shadows looking like little triangles in BF2 is just one such ATI thing, another was the AA reset itself after a video sequence in KoTOR. You get those small, annoying things with ATI but Ive had no problems whatsoever since I bought my 6800u

I did a google search for "Radeon overheating" (135.000 hits) and "Geforce overheating" (129.000 hits), and one for ATI/Nvidia driver problems (4.1 million/3.85 million)

 

Back in the day when a 9700 was the shiznits there was also this saying:

I did a search for that "saying" on google and got zero hits. Care to show me where you've seen such a saying?

Speaking of which are there any know issues involving the simultaneous AMD chipsets and ATi cards?

Actually I have a thinkpad with an ATi Mobility Fire GL, and I have never had an overheating problem.

 

I tend to use the Omega drivers, too, but I've never had any major problems either with or without. In fact the only problems I've EVER had was with both KotORs ... and that was not permiting me to have the movies running in situ as I played (but I could play them en masse).

I don't have the time to do market research for you, but based on what YOU just posted, a simple google hit comparison, backs up my statements.

 

6000 more ati heat issues is fairly signifigant, 20+k driver issues also signifigant. You accuse us of "brand loyalty," but you're scoffing at evidence which YOU found. I don't think anyone is saying "ati is terrible." Its more like ati is less reliable than nvidia.

Yes, ~4% is scoffable. The "evidence" (where you yourself came up with NOTHING) says the difference is so small it's (probably) within the random/chance margin.

 

But please feel free to come up with better and more reliable numbers to back up your statements, which so far are completely unsubstantiated.

 

I know ATI had problems in the past (apparently before I started using my GPU) but from what I can tell they've been solved now. If you check out different sites where buyers can review their purchases (www.komplett.se and www.pricerunner.se for example) you'll see that the ATI cards are getting mostly raving reviews. What people usually complain about is that they're noisy, nothing else.

On a side note, this spreading RLY obsession is disturbing.

No point in buying just yet. There are some bargains to be had, like the 6800GS, especially if you buy two in SLI (assuming you don't have an AGP motherboard, which IIRC you do).

 

the newer cards will have more unified shading units, which should suit later games (like F.E.A.R. and games yet to be released), so buying a current card will just be a stop-gap ... after all the 6800 has been out for yonks.

Computer technology changes too quickly. You buy the latest video card and next month it's old news.
