You know, since console producers lose money on each console sold you should buy as many as you can to maximise their losses. Heck, get your friends and family to buy them too!

Actually, a publisher could bring you up on charges of conversion, and whoever gave you a copy of the game on copyright infringement. The reason why a publisher won't bring the recipient up on charges of conversion should be fairly obvious.

I know the laws are behind when it comes to technology, but I don't see how pirating software off the internet is any different than walking into a store and pocketing a CD. The argument seems to be that the value is the CD itself and not the content held on it. The fact is, legality does not equal morality. Just because there are gray areas doesn't mean you should do it.

I also scoff at the argument that Kaftan is trying to stick it to the corporate machines of Microsoft and Sony. Have you ever tried to run a business? Do you really understand the complexities of running a huge corporation? There is no evil empire. They are trying to maximize profits. That's business.

Boycotting consoles will not get you anywhere because there are a ton of console consumers. If you really want to enact change, you need to put your energy into supporting the product you like, and trying to convince others to buy them. Have you ever noticed that companies are not judged on profit, but rather on their growth? If Microsoft and Sony were to suddenly stop growing they would collapse. That would be an extremely negative thing for ANY gamer. It would be a huge set back for our industry. All developers would suffer because of this.

There is a huge mass market for consoles (for reasons that have been done to death). Even if people do chip , it's not that significant (since most chipping is for avoiding localisation rather than to avoid buying).

Plus chipping does cause problems getting some things to work.

I have to agree with Volourn.  Bioware is pretty much dead now.  Deals like this kills development studios.

However, that doesnt mean Im going to miss out on potentially good games  And if I help spread console piracy, Im helping the PC market. It might be illegal (copyright vioilation, not theft) but sometimes youve got to stand up for what you believe in no matter what.

No your not. It's just a convenient way for you to rationalize your piracy of console games. If you don't like console gaming and see it as the horrible blight that it is, then the games wouldn't even be worth your time. Clearly they are.....some "hardcore PC" gamer you are. You're doing no help to the PC gaming industry by pirating a console game. At best, you're helping no one...at worst you're hurting console gaming.

And the love on with open source and the GPL has virtually no applicability in the gaming market. Pirating games as a "cause." What a joke.

Im doing a quick&dirty thing on this by just choosing a bitesized argument to reply to before I go to bed and comfortably ignoring the resut until a later date.

And thats where the error is. If this world wasnt a completely insane place to live, a software company's primary aim would be to make the best quality software possible. Its like the CIv4 quotes by Henry Ford:

"There is one rule for the industrialist and that is: Make the best quality of goods possible at the lowest cost possible, paying the highest wages possible."

and

"A business that makes nothing but money is a poor business."

And thats comming from a major capitalist, not some darn idealistic commie-hippie. Sadly, theyve succeeded in convincing us that "profit above everything and at all costs" is the way things work and that the best thing is to just lie still while they bleed society dry

Henry Ford's quote about paying the highest wages possible was to keep productivity high, to the point where no additional costs are incurred for training with employee turnover. This, combined with is idea of the 40 hour work week, was established because he felt it would be best for the company.

He also mentioned that doing such a thing ensured that his employees would then have enough money to buy the car he was making.

I will not buy a console or a game specificly developed for consoles out of principle. That principle being that I do not want to support commercial giants like Microsoft or Sony, and also because I believe in the freedom of the PC..  GNU, open source and all that. Its like me not buying porn or products that are made with child-labour. By refusing to buy, Im making a statement.

So if a company makes a game console exclusive, theyve already lost me and many people like me as customers. They know that, and it is their decision and their loss. Im never ever going to support the console industry by purchasing any of their products.

Basically you're saying a good game's worth playing irrespective of the platform. What's the point of discrimination then as long as good games are getting produced?

Eh?

I don't understand your process of thinking at all. You are trying to portray yourself as some kind of a moral defender against consoles, but then you speak of stealing (call it want you want, it is stealing) those very same 'evil' items immediately after.

So my dad decided to buy me an Xbox360.  I guess he needed someone he could actually beat on Dead or Alive 4.  Anyways, it's a very beautiful console, and it really makes my HDTV shine.

I've only tried one game on it, but the Xbox Live interface is what impressed me first.  I was able to hook it into my home network relatively easy, and with a quicj download I was also able to synchronize it with my computer.  That means I can share music and pictures, but I'm a bit surprised I can't do the same with video clips.  There might be a way, I just didn't notice.

I traded in my old console for store credit, but there really isn't many titles available yet.  I bit the bullet and decided to pre-order Oblivion for the Xbox.  I was planning on using my PC, but I think having it on a high definition widescreen television might overcome the lack of a keyboard.

Anyways, I'd like to hear if anyone else has or is planning on getting the 360.  The only game I have is DoA, but I'm an easy target.

Congrats on the console - the Live interface is very impressive this time around. I'd recommend checking out Kameo if you have the means, it's a great game, all be it rather short, but it's a solid rental experience regardless.

Thumbs up on the Oblivion choice!

It's funny, I've really started getting excited about Oblivion. I even spent a few bucks to get an Oblivion theme on my Xbox Live console. It's sad, I know, but I really wanted to see what a theme was like. It's...not worth the money, but it does make me smile a bit.

I also started up Morrowind a few weeks ago. The game still has it's flaws, but I've had a good time just exploring the world and reconnecting with the Elder Scrolls universe.

I would recommend G.R.A.W. if you're looking for a good game for your Xbox 360. It's gotten the best score of all the games I've seen so far and from the videos it looks great. Not sure if you enjoy that type of games, but still.. you can't be picky with a new console :ermm:)

Funny enough I was just playing it a bit in Gamestation. It looked much more impressive with the guy behind the counter at the controls though :">

They have a deal on with the old Xbox (trade in) so it would cost

I am against consoles due to moral and ethical reasons. But the key in this is "consumer power", if you buy a 360 and/or games for it then it sends a clear signal to MS that what they are doing is working. If you do not buy, it sends a signal that it is not working. That is all that companies think about.

To them it doesnt matter one bit if you simply dont buy their products or if you download them and play them without paying. because the result is the same = less profit.

And if a company does make enough profits from something, they will close that project. Thus, if enough people dont buy the 360 and the games for it, MS will drop consoles and go back to financing games for the PC

And its not the items that are "evil". What I dont like is that theyre trying to move the gaming market from the free and mod-friendly world of the PC to the shut-tight and license-fee-at-every-corner world of consoles.

Kaftan, I already explained that NOT buying products does NOT help the gaming industry. If you really want to convince Microsoft to focus more on PC development, you need to make sure people are buying PC games. If Microsoft sees the console market die, they will just pull out of gaming as a whole. That doesn't benefit any gamers.

On Ghost Recon, I plan on picking it up next month. It has 4 co-op maps that I'm looking forward to trying with my dad. It definitely looks like the best title so far.
