Cantousent Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 I have a friend who had problems and the 1.52 patch really did the trick. It's huge, though. Cantousent Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 I remember when someone said, "64k? Why would anyone ever need more than 48?" 45.5 for a patch still seems excessive, but I guess I should get with the times. SteveThaiBinh Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 Thanks for the heads up. I'm just downloading it now, and I'll post if anything dramatic happens. "An electric puddle is not what I need right now." (Nina Kalenkov)

Enoch Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 It's been out for over a week now, and it works pretty well for me. I can now play at one map size larger than before without it getting painfully slow in the modern age. (This is with a 64 MB video card.) I really need to upgrade. As for changes, I like that they upped the cost of the Praetorians (from 40 to 45 hammers) and lowered the cost of the Jaguars (from 40 to 35). Prats are still ridiculously overpowered, but this evens it out a little bit.

Kalfear Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 Patch made the game playable for me thank god but still slow You really do need a gig of ram for this game to run at respectable speeds Kalfear Disco and Dragons Avatar Enlarged
The.Donut Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 Yeah I've tried the patch out. Definite improvement in performance. Also, no CTD's yet...

It's above the min specs for Civ4, but the gfx card only barely so. I figure I can add two years or so to its useful life (the machine is as originally purchased in 2001) by doubling the RAM and geting a new vid card. I'll do it one of these days, but I'm lazy and not really interested any of the more demanding games currently on the market.

Im running a 3.1 gig, 512 ram, 256 meg vid card and still once you hit mod era it slows down brutally! Cant imagine trying to play with lower stats then that! Before the patch I would get some serious slowdown however it was still playable... Edited January 4, 2006 by Deraldin
Enoch Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 (edited) I should add that the game runs about as well (perhaps even a little better-- I get less stuttering during the wonder movies, for one thing) on my laptop, which runs at 1.6 gigs, 512 RAM, and a 64 MB radeon mobility 9000. (All of this, of course, is with the graphical options at or near minimum levels.) Even before the latest patch, I never had a problem with crashes; the game would just slow down to the point of being unplayable (on both machines). Actually all this works out pretty well-- despite CivIV's improvements, the modern ages are still the least fun era to play. When the game slows down, it's usually getting boring anyway. I usually start over rather than play out the finish. Edited January 4, 2006 by Enoch

Generally by the time I get to it there are two big opponents left which leaves me with usually another entire continent to crush. In fact I enjoy the modern age more than the ages before it. "

Jumjalum Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 For music of a similar style, 'The Power of One' soundtrack is a good one and fits great with Civ 4's early stages. We now bring you live footage from the World Championship Staring Final.
